That an animated avatar consumes several times more bandwidth that a plain picture - for example 15564 bytes for Dowding's 50x37 picture compared to about 1700 bytes for a still 50x50 one.

Come on, guys - a rippling effect will not make anyone confuse a picture on a screen with silk. And most would recognise a Union Jack or Stars and Stripes without flashy effects.

It really does not bother me at all that some of you behave like small girls who got carried away with glitter, and the flickering barely distracts me from reading the text but it just might lead to some bandwidth-related restrictions in the future on the part of HTC.

So... technically speaking...

Your avatar does consume bandwidth and by eliminating it, you too could avoid being someone who manages to "behave like a small girl who got carried away with glitter".

Technically speaking...

You could save even more bandwidth by not posting at all.

we seem to have fairly small core of posters, so once the initial bandwidth is used and these images are cached locally it shouldn't be a problem.

Also with the stoppage in hosted photo's (now they can be linked only -- using someone else'd bandwidth) there is probably more (bandwidth) to go around.

If it is a problem, I'm sure Skuzzy will come in here and romp on us.

MiniD - that is not what I said.

The information imparted by most of the the animations here compared to the still pictures is nill, while the cost is substantial.

For a guy using "technically speaking" twise in one post, you should have been able to tell the difference between style and substance.
My avatar is 1729 bytes and it contains way more info about me than most 15,000+ avatars here contain about their owners.

Also, if you want save bandwidth on my posts, just add me to your ignore list - then the server would not send my posts to your computer, genius.

Oh - so we now have a stoppage of hosted photos? Could it be realated to enabling of avatars? I'd rather see the original photos posted here and upload my own - having no place to host them - and modest avatars than huge flickering avatars and no photos.

Yes, they changed both of those settings at the same time.

and yes that would look like they are related.

And yep they own this forum so we get what they give us.

And if you need to have a photo hosted, speak up. There are places where you can freely host one or someone around here will probably host one for you.
