if you dont like avatars just set it so you cant see them

of course 5000 more bytes or whatever is not to much (even if you count in all 1000 or so people with them) in anycase a 50*50 1174 byte (or whatever) takes up less badwidth than a 1024*768 high colour screenshot

as for the flag thing i think its a bit over done...if you need a picture of your flag to ensure in your mind that your american and your proud i think something is wrong...even more so if it has a ripple effect

(yes i realise i have a canadian flag as mine but thats juist temporary until i can scan a penny...)

Kanth: I have no idea what those wierd squiggly things are at the top of that flag.
funkedup: Miko the only legible part is the confederate flag.  Are you a Ukrainian Rebel or something?  :D

The top part of my avatar is a cuneiform inscription "Amagi"- the earliest-known written appearance of the word "freedom", or "liberty." It is taken from a clay document written about 2300 B.C. in the Sumerian city-state of Lagash.
It is used by some libertarians as a logo.

Hopefully this larger image links successfully - I can't upload one. It is more legible but I doubt anyone will be able to read it anyway.

The bottom part is a banner under which some americans attempted to stand up for their own freedom and self-determination for the last time.

Wouldn't you say this avatar rather accurately describes my political leanings, brilliance, erudition and low moral character? ;)

*negroes excepted

Seriously how can you talk about freedom and liberty when you also display a confederate flag - but then again I know you managed to convince yourself that the south had no slaves or was about to free them all and that the war had nothing to do with slavery.

GRUNHERZ: Seriously how can you talk about freedom and liberty when you also display a confederate flag...

I did not say "angels" or "saints" but "some americans". The 600,000 of volunteers of the Confederate Army could not have possibly been slave-owners - there were less than 200,000 of those in the whole Confederacy and not every single slave-owner served in the army.
Slavery was not in the economic interests of those non-slave owning whites.

convince yourself that the south had no slaves or was about to free them all and that the war had nothing to do with slavery.

Not "about" but "eventually" - just like Northern states and other countries did. And some people who stood under that flag might have been fighting for slavery, for all I know - but most were not.

There were plenty of abolitionists and even a few blacks among confederate soldiers. Besides, when the South secceded, it only had 7 slave states while North still had 8.
And some of the "free" states did have slavery not that long before and got rid of it without war - as the South would have done.

The legend that "Stars and Bars" stood for slavery is a recent (1970?) invention. It did not - at least for most people. No more than "Stars and Stripes" stood for slavery in slave-owning USA of Washington.

It does not represent slavery but rather self-determination and federalism to me. I know my ancestors for the last few hundred years and they did not own slaves - which some of you cannot claim.

As to what motivation you want to attribute to me despite all evidence in order to "attack a strawmen" - it's entirely your business.

OK miko.. so its getting a little clearer.  5k is alright, but 15k isn't.  Could you just be more specific and give an exact avatar size people should try to stay under in order to avoid your scorn?

Why do you care about my scorn? I do not intend to make people "conserve" and it's not my board anyway to police.
I just pointed out an opportunity to conserve and to be considerate for those willing to do so. Many people had no idea about the sizes of their avatars or their effect on bandwidth.

Udet - whatever I think about artistic virtues of your avatar (OK, it's cool, I admit it), it's increased size is due to it's content, not style.
