#5: Sands of Iwo Jima
The scene where John Wayne must keep his men in their foxholes while the weak voice of a wounded Marine calls out in the night ..."Stryker".   Priceless!

#4: Black Hawk Down
A gritty and factual look at what happens when things go wrong.

#3 Saving Private Ryan
Now I know what it was REALLY  like on D-Day.

#2 Full Metal Jacket
 R. Lee Ermey...nuff said.

#1 Patton
If Eisenhower would have just let the man do his job...

Behind Enemy Lines?

My gawd, that movie was horrible. I especially loved the SA-13s that flew forever and practically engaged in a dogfight with an F/A-18. No list with Behind Enemy Lines can be considered complete without Pearl Harbor as well. :)

I also assume when you say "war film" you mean modern mechanized war.

On my list for "modern war" in no particular order:

The Enemy Below
Das Boot
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Midway
Tora Tora Tora
Hamburger Hill
Lawrence of Arabia
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Kelly's Heroes
The Dirty Dozen
The Guns of Navarone
The Great Escape
The Sand Pebbles

Hey Saur... WRT The Thin Red Line, I didn't get it at all. What did I miss that made the movie seem so horrible?

I saw a GREAT WW2 flick once very late at night (thats always when they are best!) about a German POW sent back to Germany to spy for the Allies. The kid was a Medic. The only actor I remember in it is Richard Basehardt, he played the kids handler.

If your going for realism, check these films out:

Memphis Belle -  Doesn't accurately follow the last mission of the real Memphis Belle, but it shows what truely did happen on B17 missions in 1943.

Saving Private Ryan -  Got some pretty realistic ground combat here.

Hamburger Hill Follows the story of the 101st Airborne as they attack a fortified hill in the Au Shau Valley in Vietnam.  True story.

Platoon - Probably the most famous movie about Vietnam.

The Boys of Company C -Another good Vietnam movie.

The name of the movie I was thinking about is "Decision Before Dawn" a MUST see. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "The Big Red One".
