This used to be a peeve of mine when flying the Yak: it required close quarters for a kill with reasonable ammo (something I never had to do with the La-5FN).  In the pre-1.04 FM this usually meant eventual death, because it meant a turnfight with an evading con, resulting in totally bled energy.  Now, in 1.04 with the lower induced drag levels a Yak can survive in such a situation.

I guess the time of Sorrow has finally arrived

Great plane. And what about la5, are there more of them in arena now? They shall be more competative now with new FM.

Good point, Fariz.  I've been thinking about this too.  The Lavochkin was my ride until the Yakovlev came, but now I only fly the La-5FN when I'm looking for bombers.  Maybe the new FM has been gracious with the La-5 too.  It certainly seems that way.

Of the two aircraft the Yakovlev has much wider performance vs altitude, a lot more.  In fact, the Yak-9U is good until nearly 24k.  The La-5FN roughly tops out at about 17k, and that's a 7k difference.  About the only place the Lavochkin may find some parity with the Yakovlev is from 5k, down.  But the one thing the La-5FN has over the Yak-9U is two ShVAKs with 200 rds each  , and for me that's a very tempting feature ... decisions, decisions

Sifter & SeaWulfe, I don't think I would try those manuevers in 1.04

There was a problem with the Yak in 1.03 where as it accelerated, its trim would go off, and the nose would rise, scrubbing off what speed you were gaining.

Its fixed. The Yak is now one of the fastest accelerators in the game now.

I flew the yak the first day it came out in 1.03 and that's all I have ever flown since. Yes the yak in 1.03 bled a little more E then the new version, but I used that to my advantage to force an overshoot or attacking plane would run out of E and Auger. With the right usage of flaps and rudder it was and still is easy to reverse the situation. Dont know why you all think the Yak just now came of age, it was always there before, you just didnt want to take the time to learn it.

Yak-9 easy to fly hard to master

I'd never really tried the Yak, but just did some offline flying in it....you're right, that's got some nice characteristics!  Have to try that in the MA sometime soon.

(at this point, all the other Yak drivers look around and go "Damn, there go our reputations as good pilots!    ).

Thanks for the tip.

I fly yak9u almost all the time h2h now, and find it extremely good plane, very capable. It lacks firepower, esp. against buffs, but this plane is a real fun.

I think that when I am back to MA I will aply for VVS. So there is a chance that we may fly in a wing one day leonid

Hmm

I find it amusing that PPL think you have to be close in a Yak to be dangerous. The truth is that I do 50% of my kills at 400-500 yds. The trick is that I pick my shots carefully- seperate ShVAk and 12.5 mm - they do different jobs. Dead 6 close up 20mm at low deflection kills fast. But most of my kills are with the MG. 12.5 has the range of the .50 cal but more punch at 500 yds IMHO.
ignore dead 6 shots- with ones from a low deflection high or low aspect angle these bullets rip right through the pilot and engine- they penetrate the whole plane!
My fav kill of all time was Citabria in his p-38, he went over the top with me 400 yds behind, just as he was perfectly profiled I shot a line of bullets right up his middle pilots bump. Not one miss, perfect. So lesson is- BEWARE a pilot that fires from 500 yds in a Yak. He just may know what he's doing and YOUR in trouble

I have some footage of Towd dancing around in a Yak against 4 bogies.  I'd give it out except he kills me in it

He got 2 pilots before going down.
