Basketball isnt a sport .......Hockey is!!!

Endurance:  Basketball players jog around with the occasional sprint.  Usually for bouts of anywhere from 20-30 minutes with 3-5 minute rests inbetween.  Hockey players skate balls out for about a minute at a time, and usually sit for about 2 minutes.  This countinues until the average player usually has stacked up anywhere between 25 and 35 minutes in the ice.  The physical effort level is far greater in hockey, and as such, they are some of the most conditioned team athletes in the world (second only to Soccer (football) and Tennis IMO)  You can argue that, as mentioned, hockey player sit every minute or so, but the total energy expended is greater as basketball players are pretty "easy" unless they see an oppounity.  I figure basketball players approach the 100% effort level than a hockey player lives by once or twice a minute for a few seconds.

Skill:  Appels and oranges.  If you put a basketabll player on ice, he would fall and not get up.  If you put a hockey player on a court, he wouldnt be able to play competatively.  At other levels, however, any 8 year old can run around with his friends and play basketball.  You run, jump, and shoot a ball.  Hockey requires two important skills: the ability to ice skate... very well, and the ability to fling a small, frozen rubber disk with a 6 foot stick.  If you cant skate, you cant play.  If you cant use the stick, you cant play.  If you want to play competatively, you need to be at the top of you game in both areas and then subject yourself to flying bodies aimed at you the entire time.

Speed:  Its simply not possible for a basketball player to run as fast as a hockey player can skate.  Period.

Strength:  Again, not really a contest.  Basketball players must be in good shape, but they arent "strong."  Taking strides at the NHL level is probably about comparable to jumping up and down for the whole game instead of running throughout an NBA game.  In addition to this, you must be able to both fight off and give good solid hits to other players.  Defend "toughness" or "strength" any way you chose, claiming that basketabll players are "stronger" than hockey players is ridiculous (did I spell it right MiniD?).

As an example Ill sight mental toughness since the physical comparison is almost laughable.  A basketball player gets an elbow to the ribs under the net... ow... ow... it hurts... I need a doctor... call a foul... ow!!!  No.

A hockey defensemen lines up a forward skater in his zone, and with a closure speed around 30 MPH proceeds to hit him as hard as he can into wooden boards than dont give.  Upon shaking the puck loose, another player gets it and takes a shot, the other defensemen than dives out, 6 feet infront of the shooter to stop a 120MPH slap shoot with his chest.  After both engagements, the players get up immediately and continue to gun after the puck and the player than has it.  Lets say one needs stiches... he'll miss a shift or two while his face is being fixed.  A basketball player is already having an ambulance called for him.

Hockey is not a tough sport at all- hell women play it.  Nothing rivals Football (American) for brutality and violence.  I played it all -rugby, hockey , basketball, soccer and on and on.  The full speed collisions that happen in football cannot be rivaled by anything in sports.  The pain of getting laid out by a bone jarring hit is indescribable.  All the hockey dorks and rugby dorks are going to disagree but there is no contest.

If you think a mid field football hit is more violent than a mid ice collision I can only assume youre refering to street hockey.  As football players cant run as fast as hockey players can skate, the collission is not as severe - its just math.  I'd rather be hit by a free safety coming in full bore than a really pissed off goon with a stick and knives attached to his feet.  ;)

There was a great picture in Philly here a few years back of the Eagles (football) and the Flyers (hockey).  The joke was that the hockey players were bigger, so that arguements out.

I've played rugby and football, and I'd have to say that football is definately the more 'violent' of the two.  In football, you get HIT.  You put everything you have into stopping the ball carrier- and you honestly put EVERYTHING you have into it because you know you have pads so it won't hurt you as bad.  Rugby there is a lot more hitting, and it is faster paced, but the hits aren't as hard.

I've never played hockey, but I'd wager it is probably at about the rugby level for violence.  A lot of bruises, broken fingers, broken noses, but not to many broken legs or other 'major' bones.

Did not even mention the fact that you use your helmet as a weapon too.  Every year in this country about 12 people die from playing football due to collisions.  Chuckey Mullins ring a bell to anybody?  Old Miss safety that died after taking a shot.
When I played I saw my friend break his neck…sounded like a branch breaking.  Another friend shattered his hip bone and walks with a cane today.  After games I was covered with bruises and my feet were normally swollen because of people stepping on my feet throughout the game.  Once I took a shot from a fullback that caused my neck to swell up and a tumor later formed.  Nothing compares to the brutality of football …at least any mainstream sport.
You can’t be serious about hockey players being bigger than football players??  Most interior linemen now are 6’7” 300+.  Did you see that Dallas Cowboy linemen bench 700+ pounds during a Monday night game?  My friend got drafted to the Arizona Cardinals and never made it out of training camp.  He was on pain meds around the clock because of the shots he was taking.  Skip a day or two and you loose your spot.  Look at Earl Camble today- poor man cant even walk.  He needs a aid to lift him from a seating position because of all the damage he took in his career.  Hockey players are pampered rednecks with bad haircuts and buck teeth.

Never played hockey..I've played a bit of basketball.

I have seen practices of varsity teams and semi-pro teams for both sports.

I've never seen a basketball player throwing up after a practice.  I don't think I've ever seen a hockey practice where guys didn't throw up.

Football is pretty tough. However since it's not a constant field of motion it's a little different then hockey..

anyway, besides the obvious fact that hockey is better, you'd be hard pressed to find a 120mph shot. 150 is laughable. they're still at the 100s now

You forgot to add getting stitches on a regular basis and getting your teeth knocked out for hockey.

There's no smile like a hockey smile!

What did McInnis fire at the skill compitition a few years back... didnt he register 123 MPH?  I think that was it.

In any event, MoMoney, the size issue was a joke for that reason - the starting hockey line was bigger than the starting football line.  But it doesnt really matter how big a lineman is, or how much he can bench.  All hes doing is standing into someone 2 feet away and pushing.  Id say an open field hit is alot more comparable to a hit in hockey.

Different strokes for different folks I guess - football is just too boring for me - 6 seconds of movement followed by 2 minutes of listening to the announcer... repeat.  The days of "real men" playing football are over (cutting off a finger instead of sewing it back so you can play the 4th quarter, etc) - Hockey still has some of those guys left... alot actually - that will play with injuries that would bench alot of current day football players... let alone basketball players.

Didn't even mention the fact that football is BY FAR the most complex sport.  Its FULL CONTACT CHESS.  Play books cover thousands of plays at the pro-level..I'm including all of the possible formations along with the plays that go with them and even audibles.
You can’t even imagine what goes on in the trenches- its warfare.  Its not exhausting pushing on a 300 lb maniac every play?  Oh ya- many Offensive linemen pull on almost every play today.  That means they run in front of the backs on sweeps ..etc.  That’s why those big guys can run too.  Defense linemen- forget about it- you run pursuit every play while jumping over bodies and fighting off blocks.  One play and your exhausted.
What do you think goes on in those pile-ups?  Biting-spiting, cursing and God knows what else.  War is hell…Football is hell- but fun to watch.

Happened regularly when I was playing. But then I had a coach who wanted to win the last 10 minutes of every game. We ran till we puked on many occasions.

We actually did sprinter interval training ... out on the track. Try running 10 straight 200 meter sprints under 26 seconds each with nothing but a 200 meter jog inbetween to rest. And that was just a small portion of the 3 hour daily practice.

There is no doubt that Basketball requires the greatest athletes in the world. The worst player on an NBA team can probably outrun outjump and possesses better hands than all but a few tight ends in the NFL.

no doubt.. what a joke.

for the record.  the average hockey player is NOT nearly as big as the average football player... but.
they collide at over 60mph at times, and play the whole time they are on the ice.

a football player would die of a heart attack if they tried to keep up with a hockey player.
on the flipside, most hockey players would get crushed on the football field simply due to the size difference.. assuming the football player could actually catch one :)

I don't remember the stats but the actual play time in a football game is very low.  They huddle, call a play, call a timeout (or tv timeout), line up to actually play.. hike the ball and the play lasts for what?  10 seconds?.. then gather around while they place the ball.. rinse and repeat.
total playing time during a football game is in minutes, not hours.

hockey:  game on the whole time you are on the ice.. expcept for face-offs.  oh.. and then there's playoff OT>. can last longer than the game itself.

and unlike basketball, they players don't stand around waiting.. they are moving, skating, hitting, fighting, etc.. the whole time..
