Radiator is out ... what do you do???
« on: May 19, 2003, 09:35:32 AM »
Here is what I did and is this gaming the game??

Upped a TEMPest to defend a CV that was ~30 miles away.  I get over the CV and proceed to kill a formation of B17s that had just sunk the CV (I am a great defender, eh?).  After 2 passes the B17s are dead, with only one ping to me.  But that one ping had a "bad" sound to it, so I check my damage list.  Sure enough, a  one ping hit to the radiator.  I am 30 miles away from the nearest friendly base, and if you have ever had a radiator hit in a TEMP, you don't fly very far without coolant.  So I level out at 6K ft and set a heading the base.  I keep a close eye on the temperature guage.  I'm pissed about loosing my perks to one ping, so I start thinking "what can I do....?".  Just as the temperature guage reaches max, I cut the engine and reduce RPM, thinking at least I could glide in close enough for a ditch instead of a capture.  I notice the engine cooling off quite quickly so as the TEMPest slows down to stalling speed, I up the RPM, start the engine and go full throttle.  I am able to get up to 200+ mph before cutting the engine again just before it "locks up".  As I get within 5 miles of home base, I put the nose down and easily glide it into the approach and use the engine to set her down softly to a successful landing.

Is this taking advantage of a "bug" or "mis-modeling" in the game, or is this taking advantage of the capabilities of the TEMP?

no, thats not a bug, the air flow will cool the eng, you can use that with a oil leak also, the oil will stop leaking when the eng is off. works with all A/C.
just remember to save a little engine for the landing/taxi.

i had the water pump quit on my boats outboard motor, and i used the same tactic.....run till hot , then shut down and coast , then run a little etc etc.

I think this begs the larger question...what's a USN guy doing in a TEMPEST?

(shakes head in disgust...)

hiya terror, you probably don't know me, but i tangled with you last night, quite fun for the most part. You were a hog, i was in 51. I had been switching joysticks and had just reinstalled my ms twisty and upped. Funny thing happened -- any time i input right rudder my plane twitched left severly, making plane a POS. To make a long story short, you flew your hog quite nicely, and after my solution fell apart and I died [thks for putting me out of my misery :( ] I find out that instead of reversing the axis on my throttle, I had reversed the axis on my dang rudder! Oh the shame! I distincly recalled seeing your id as the victor....all i could think was 'dang, another good engagement lost to me *($*( with sticks' .

thanks all, just had to share that

I made every mistake during that engagement.  Both you and an LA7 had me at one point.  It was pure luck that I survived at  all.  No skill on my part, just deperation and luck.  I logged after that mission, feeling that all my good luck had been exhausted for the night.

Was a fun fight, had me sweating for sure!

I did that sometimes as well, but most of the time, I just get impatient, cry a little & be done with it (auger) :)

I do the same thing.
Works great with most planes.
I don't think its gaming I think its being creative.

Its not gaming the system....its not a bug....its using all of your available resources to come up with a solution to get  your hide back to base!   Good Job!

Yeah it's not gamey.  I do it all the time.

I spent one Christmas dinner landed on a beach waiting for a tiffie to cool down enough to make the last hop over the water to home base.
