American beer is weak......... MYTH!
« on: May 23, 2003, 01:12:40 PM »
Traditional American Beers (like Bud & Miller) are perceived as weak because they are light in color.
Up until very recently, Americans always documented the Alcohol Pct. As Alcohol By Weight (ABW), while the rest of the world uses Alcohol By Volume (ABV). The ABV number will always be higher. Thus, people were comparing apples and oranges.

It's not the alcohol that's weak. It's the taste.

Bevo,  its not about alcohol content but taste.  Put a good german beer (Paulianer (sp?) comes to mind, next to any american domestic beer,  and you'll see that american beer has no taste, might as well be drinking piss and water.

Only exception IMO in the last few years is Shiner's Bock is pretty close to german beer taste.

I have no opinion of any beers from micro brewerys or home brewed havent  drank any since 1994.

I spent 4 years in Germany drinking german beer almost every weekend (and a few week days) and tried several different brands.   I've been back in the states now for 5 years and rarely drink beer anymore unless its Bock or the occasional imported german beers like Bischoff (also good)

All mass produced beer tastes like **** once you get hooked on microbrews.  And strength is seldomely an issue there.

Even "weak" is the wrong term to describe the taste of Bud or MGD. I think "shallow" is more accurate. The better beers have a fullness of taste that is missing in most American beers, imho.

I drink Ziegenbock. The Miller lite and Bud were just examples......... and every Canadian out there talks about how weak American beer is. That's all I was saying.

why be nice?  just call it what it American macrobrews are.  Horse piss.  Lite beers are watered down horse piss.

If American beer is so gawd awful bad, how do you account for the stats on that site, with US beers the highest in almost every category.  Like I said, I am not a beer officianado.  Scoth is my drink.  I'm just curious as to how bad American beer really is.
Especially since most big american beers were started by immigrants usuing  old world recipes?  Is it because we  like it ice cold?

Really, Im just curious.  Not trying to bash anyone's beer.

You can argue a beer has to taste all bold and manly all you want. All beer is good beer mostly. Some are more suited people’s individual tastes, or sometimes what image they want to project.  The beer company’s are well aware of this, as their commercials, billboards, and this thread will attest.

Personally, I like a ice cold can of Old Milwaukee because it is light, crisp, and you don’t feel like you swallowed of pop-up tent after 10 of them. And they kick your ass, which was the point of the thread I think. Bud Light is good that way too, although I admit Coors Light might take "light" too far.

So keep paying $7.99 a six pack for Amstel Light and Heineken, and don’t buy Old Mil, or you’ll fuk up the $4.49 12 pack price thank you.
