Actually, u get far more visual aids in here than in real life. Maybe
nme icons only until 1k, then the make will appear. There is no way a pilot can id an aircraft from 5k in real life...
Ask Toad about that. You can search for his posts regarding this matter on the BBS.
5K is only 2.84 miles. Aircraft with 30' wingspans shouldn't be hard at all to identify at this distance. In a historical arena, you have the added benifit of having an idea of what you are going to face. In the MA it's anything goes.
...In AH the zoom function should be enuff of an advantage unitil close range.
the zoom function in AH is not like using binoculars. It only narrows the field of view. Having an increased field of view from that of a normal person helps to make up for the lack of peripheral vision. This is why when you are zoomed in the cockpit feels more like what you would think a tiny ww2 fighter should feel like and not a gymnasium.
Personally, I would like to see a system similar to WW2OL's, but smaller.
I think it was Zigrat who came up with the idea of using a bar type indicater that represents distance and an alpha channel that fades in and out depending on proximity and amount of attention paid to the contact. I like that.
...but no icons is difficulty for difficulties sake, not realism.
