ICONS of death....
« on: May 26, 2003, 01:24:22 AM »
I think HT needs to get rid of the flashing neon sign icons of perk planes...or at least the ones he can.  The spit 14 for example...why does that one icon have to tell the world he is a 14 model, instead of just "spit" like all the rest?  Same for the F4u models.  262, not much you can do, 163, etc.

Actually, now that I think about it, why does the icon have to tell the enemy the kind of plane you are flying at all?  How about just a country symbol?  I'd like to see the distance read outs gone too.

Because people flying perk planes deserve to be punished for it.

Extra large hot pink flashing icons for all perk planes is my vote.

I agree w AKWarp..just an nme icon is all thats necessary.  Let the pilot id the make and model.

Exactly the other way round. Allow to ID by icon, but force the color to gray so spotting isn't so gamey dweebish easy.

Yeah, cause a tiny 2d monitor is just like real life.

Actually, u get far more visual aids in here than in real life.  Maybe
nme icons only until 1k,  then the make will appear.  There is no way a pilot can id an aircraft from 5k in real life.  In AH the zoom function should be enuff of an advantage unitil close range.

Ask Toad about that.  You can search for his posts regarding this matter on the BBS.

5K is only 2.84 miles.  Aircraft with 30' wingspans shouldn't be hard at all to identify at this distance.  In a historical arena, you have the added benifit of having an idea of what you are going to face.  In the MA it's anything goes.

the zoom function in AH is not like using binoculars.  It only narrows the field of view.  Having an increased field of view from that of a normal person helps to make up for the lack of peripheral vision.  This is why when you are zoomed in the cockpit feels more like what you would think a tiny ww2 fighter should feel like and not a gymnasium.

Personally, I would like to see a system similar to WW2OL's, but smaller.

I think it was Zigrat who came up with the idea of using a bar type indicater that represents distance and an alpha channel that fades in and out depending on proximity and amount of attention paid to the contact.  I like that.

...but no icons is difficulty for difficulties sake, not realism.

Personaly, I would like to see all plane type tags done with, distance counter included. A simple bish/rook/nit icon would do just fine as far as I am concerned.  Doing this would bring a new level of skill in to baging kills. Besides, its not all that difficult to tell between 450yrds and 750yrds. ;)

I agreee with the second part, but, 2.84 miles maybe ok during prestine weather conditions, but a little haze, or some glare, or shadows from the clouds and there is no way to id an aircraft from that distance.  I think the clear weather and the zoom factor are plenty of advantages for vis.  Auto ID'ing planes does take from the skill level required.  Maybe AH:ToD will bring some of these "more realism" aspects to the game.  Perhaps it is best that the MA be a place where one hones his skills to prepare for the AH:ToD arena.

I wasn't advocating getting rid of the icons completely, just the aircraft type and distance.  Just have the team symbol on it, and color, of course.

If nothing else, at least drop the aircraft type.  It isn't difficult to ID the basic airframe...well, not too difficult for most people anyway......
