The Terrain Editor...questions
« on: August 03, 2000, 05:39:00 PM »
Is anyone else curious about the terrain editor? I'm not askin' for like, top secret details or anything... but... I'd sure love to hear about how this thing works.

Do ya need a Doctorate in NodeSplineWhatnots to work it?

How much control do ya have? ie, Could ya recreate the some historically significant area somewhat acurately?

Can ya place buildings individually? Or do they come clumped as Factory, City etc.

Do you have control over the settings of the objects you place in the terain (ie ack, fuel state etc.)?

A ton of other questions, I'm sure. Pyro, it'd be great to hear about this from you... or perhaps give one of the testers the go ahead to come on here and tell us how cool this thing will be.

If this stuff has been covered elsewhere, my apologies.

Good questions. I've been curious as to what tools one would need to help design a terrain. I have access to a copy of 3DStudio ver 2.5 but have no idea how to use it nor do I know if it would help to create them.

Good question..

Allway thought a landing strip tunneled outa the side of a mountain would cool. There would only be 1 ack at each entrance to the tunnel. No buffs would be able to take it out,but a lite fighter would have to attempt to straff it.

Damn this aint histroical but would be a blast if each country had a ( hidden base )..

Dog out.....

Another question occured to me. The areas like the farmlands and the snow... Can we create our own textures and apply them? Enabling hedgrows, roads, the desert, tundra etc.

Er... and another one - can we seperate and move land masses around? This in regards to creating a Pacific island terrain.

Something along the lines of map creation for SimCity 3000 would be nice.  You could use real satellite footage to make a terrain, and then add fields, ports, cities, and so on.  I hope the editor doesn't require 3D Studio MAX since it costs $800 for an academic version.

SC3K map...oooh the possibilities!  Massive bombing raid on MattVille when it fills the map, instead of unleashing natural disasters on it!
Three Times One Minus One.  Dayum!

You'd love my CAD/CAM system at work, costs about $40,000 per work station for hardware/Software loadup, of course, we do make the real commercial  and Warplanes.

Kinetix recently announced they would be licensing a feature reduced version of max called Gmax(?) to game developers that could be bundled with games so users can make their own game addons.

Hamish, what are you doing for work now?  Just curious, as I have 5 different trades in the last 22 years of my adult work life(Machinist, tool maker, tool designer, NC Programming, Application Analyst.

So what are you guys using? CATIA? I work mostly with AutoCAD and am learning Solid Edge. I take it you are working at BOEING Rip? I have a friend who works there. Er, did. He is now in the Boeing Safety Company or some spin off.
