I'd never heard of it until you posted about it.  I did a search on the net for it and saw the trailer.  WOW!!!!  There is a DVD copy at a Blockbuster by my house.  I am out the door to go purchase it!!  Thanks for the heads up mini!!

GSholz,

It's a mini series similar to Band of Brothers, but dealing with british pilots during the battle of Britain.

It was a Masterpiece Theatre production that came out in '90 or '91.  I still have copies of it on VHS somewhere around here.  Hornet Squadron was the main group in it.  There was a Yank the the group as well as I remember.  Also, the opening scene where the CO dies is classic.

Most realistic?????  That movie, while somewhat enjoyable was a crock of crap, from the unrealsitic looking aircraft positions, to the portrayal of a lot of the combat situations.

You guys must have never seen Final Countdown.

Buy the DVD, it's probably one of the best war films of all time.

Not in any particular order:

Battle of Britain

Blue Max

The Bridges of Toko Ri

and another Korean war film with Mitchum and Robert Wagner starring F86's and F84's disguised as Migs the name of which I can't remember.

The Blue Max in part because I saw some of it being made around my area. Can you imagine anything more exciting as a kid than actually watching a dogfight overhead. Years later I flew from the airfield it was made. There were even some relics of the film around. Two other WW1 films were also made in the vicinity so I was overdosed on dogfighting Sopwiths, Se5's and Fokkers including one glorious moment when I was sole witness to two biplanes in combat at extremely low level. Fantastic!

The Battle of Britain  because of all those Spits and Heinkels.

The bridges of Toko Ri for the Panthers and it's non Hollywood ending and that other film because the F86 is in my opinion one of the most aesthetically pleasing jet fighter's ever made.

Daiblo

That is "A Piece Of Cake"

I have it on VHS.  Great Spit footage.  I believe it was made in 1988 but Masterpiece showed it in 1991, I think.

The book is great also!
Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

The Korean war film you refer to is called "The Hunters". The Robert Mitchum character is " Major Cleve Seville". Can't remember the name of the Robert Wagner character. It's a pretty good film.

"Battle of Britain" with Michael Caine was bogged down with a horrible love story sub-plot.

"Midway" suffered from a horrible sub-plot as well but produced some great quotes ("You better shape up, Tiger, or some hot-shot Jap pilot is going to flame your a**!") and memorable scenes (Heston's flaps flopping in the wind on final approach to the carrier).

The best of the best:

"Twelve O'Clock High"

"Tora! Tora! Tora!"

and my favorite, which I'm hoping will be released on DVD soon,

"Gun Camera Footage of World War Two"
