The "cube" is that which has no form, like the monolith in "2001: A Space Odyssey."

Seriously, I've seen these cubes on occasion sitting at the end of the runway immediately after logging into the arena, kinda like the way you sometimes see all aircraft as P-51's or GV's (which are taking off sometimes) while you're waiting for the arena info to get all loaded.  I think APDrone got it right: a gunner that bailed from a buff but hasn't yet popped the chute.

I've never seen one of these things take evasive action though.

The object you saw was a weather balloon....or perhaps even swamp gas....or maybe the planet Venus.
