Funked, just got about 400 miles (break in) on my new Yoko's ES100, can't believe how CRAPPY those German Continentals were!  Big grin ear to ear after I got them mounted. :)

My 99 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro that I just bought has continental tires. Are these most likely the original tires? The car has 44,000 miles on it. Is continental a bad brand, or just merely not in the league of the Yokohama's?

Continental are fine tires, but most cars come from the factory with all season tires which give good treadwear and good foul-weather traction, but aren't very sticky on dry pavement.  You can get tires with more agressive tread patterns and softer rubber which will handle a lot better, at the cost of tread life and a little bit of wet/snow traction.  This is what Rip and I did.  Rip went with Yokohama AVS ES100 which are Yokohama's second highest performance tire, and I went with Pirelli P-Zero Nero which is Pirelli's highest performance tire.  In MN you are probably better off sticking with all seasons because of the rain in the warm months.  But then again with AWD you might be just fine on max performance tires.

Yeah I would probably run winter tires if I lived up there.  What a lot of guys from our Impreza club do is this:
Get Plus-One (17") wheels with high performance tires for summer.
Keep the stock (16") wheels and put dedicated snow tires on them for winter.

http://www.tirerack.com is a pretty good place to get tires and wheels.  Prices are very good, and they have great technical support.  They actually have a test track at their headquarters which allows them to do controlled testing.  We have a dedicated TireRack rep for our Impreza club and they are extremely helpful.

Oo.. Rip-man.  You should like those AVS ES100's are nice.  Some of my pal's have those on their Miata's. Only thing is at the end of their life they get loud!  Like my Toyo's T1-S (great in rain). Just don't drive them in the snow!

Funk, (we have our own rep as well) I'm going to the P Zero Nero's as well.  I though of the S03's but since these got notice better I'm gonna jump ont he band waggon too.

S-03's are quality, but reported to tramline quite a bit..great for the track but so-so for a daily commuter.

Tramline.. try driving with these Toyo T1-S's and plus my alignment doesn't help.

For the local autocross I'll drive to the event with my worn Azenas on 14" rims. Untill I can pick up a truck or Jeep to towe my ride to events. Till them I'm stuck with ultra hp tires

Funked, the japanese let the germans do all the R&D, then they just copy it. They always have. Especially body styling. ;)
