Engine management
« on: June 20, 2003, 11:35:19 AM »
Will all aircraft fly around at Mil power all the time as they do in AH currently?

Is it possible to have some type of engine management that would require the pilot to try to prevent his A/C from overheating if running in this condition for to long?

Much of this would depend on weather fuel consumption is modeled differently or more accurately as well.

One solution is to increase the fuel multiplier forcing people to manage there fuel more efficiently but this may cause issues with frequent augers because of emty tanks and that is no fun.

I think the best solution would be to incorperate some limit to the time you can fly at mil power. I remeber Janes WW2 fighters you would get a message telling you your engine was running hot and you reduced power until it went away.

Alos the modeling of WEP should be looked at. For some reason all American A/C are lumped into 5 minutes of WEP when in fact most of the F6F, F4U, P-47 had much more WEP time than that. German A/C do not have this problem but I have never seen anything on them that list WEP times or durations. The 109 WEP seems to be endless but the P-47 is limited to 5 minutes. The P-47D had enough wep for almost 1/2 hour of continious use, why is the 109 so much better?

In anycase more engine management would add much to the game.

i not agree

to complicated for many newbies, we will see more players on the groud then now
Of course for old tards its something new ;) and bring game much more to reality. Same time killing gameplay. Try to tell that furballers;)

One more - Jets
Me262 engines had very interesting feachers that very interesting to realise:
1: If you move your throttle from full power to idel too fast you get engines cut. 262 pilot had to be very carefull with his engines.
2: At high speeds you could not reduce your RPM - at speed of 400-500 km/h you could not get less then 7000 rpm.

How many players will fly perked 262 with such feachers - it would become harder plane to control and plne for more expirenced pilots.

I'm all for engine management, newbies shouldn't find it that difficult, they get a message saying engine overheating, they ask what this is, we tell them to reduce throttle etc. and give reasons...it's as simple as that.
Not that difficult compared to explaining how to level bomb.

We have a stall limiter.

So, that should probably mean that there's no reason why we'd not want to expect a "engine control limiter" ;)

Automatic controls for newbies - easy to deal with, but not the best of perforamnce expected!

Well, right Kweassa

its only question how bad "auto" should be;)
and when u can turn this off? like current we have tracers /in tower only/ or like combat trim/in flight/?

somone notice how many peoples fly on FB arenas with and without engine managment?
I saw mostly players on "easy" arenas

ohh, and one more
Engine managment its really cool when u not must fight with lemmings raides. Just sortier and back home, enemy down,  nothing left to kill, nothing can suprise us.
Flying AH u never know when another wave inbound, so if u overheat your engine in first couple fights u have much decreased performance. And lemming still comming and comming, all "reborn" with fresh engines
