Paper Tigers, Glass Sturmoviks, and Poopy Ordinance.

This is not a rant, or a whine, but more of an explaination of the whyfors of my recent perk the LA 7 rant in the post "WTF" What follows is a good picture of how the game has been going for me.

Picture a ground and air attack on our small airfield. Panzers, Osties, and M-3s headed towards the town, high alt B-17s pasting the hell out of the fighter hangers, P-38s and 47s jaboing our resources out of existance.

VH is still up so I grab a mighty Tiger and head towards the town. As I near the town, I spot a Panzer and a M-3 rounding a hill into the open. I go to the main gun, aquire the Panzer and let loose a round to help guage the range. The Panzer spots me and starts laying smoke rounds between us.

I can't see them anymore so I head for the Map Room in the town, then hut the engine down so I can hear em. Pretty soon I hear the M-3, so I pop up and take a look around. He is approching the map room. I go back to the main gun and aquire him in my sights. No elevation is needed as he is at point blank range (maybe 50-75yards). I let go a AP round and hit him in the side. While I'm waiting for another round to be loaded, he stops and releases the drunks. I pop back out of the hatch and murder them with the pop gun up top. By now he is peppering me with his 50. I drop back into the main gun and put another AP into him. He's still driving me batty with his 50 while I wait for another round to load up. Just as I'm about to pop another one into him, he blows up.

About now I start to hear the panzer coming closer. I pop out the top hatch to look for him, but theres still alot of smoke around. Finally I just make him out through the haze. Back to the main gun and get him in my sights. His turret is swiveling back and forth so he hasn't spotted me yet. He's close, so again no elevation is needed. I put the crosshairs on him and let go a AP round. A hit on the turret just above the body. Now he's looking around like crazy as I wait for another round to get into the tube. Blame! I fire another round and score a hit in the same spot. I watch spellbound as his turret traverses towards me. I watch the round coming towards me. I wake up in the tower.

according to the real-life penetrationdata i have found, the gun on our panzer can penetrate the frontal armor on our tiger inside 500 meters.

I have no idea why it is so hard to kill panzers, lately, though.  I have teh same results--shots that six months ago turned a panzer inside out don't quite do it, anymore.

By this time, the VH is down, all the fighter hangers are rubble, so I grab a IL2, load up some bombs, rockets, and cannons. I know my M-3 buddy will be bac shortly so I roll and head towards the town.

Nearing the town, I spot the uber panzer. I toggle the rockets on, and shove the nose over and line up on him. Fire 1, fire 2, fire 3! Hit, hit, hit! At the time of the second rocket hit, he is pinging me with his top machine gun. A second after I fly over the top of him, he blows up. Thick skinned bugger!

There! another M-3, and his troops are running for the town. I ignore the M-3 and concentrate on gunning the drunks. As I straff them, he is plinking me with his 50. I think I go one of the drunks on my first pass, but I didn't have much time to set up my first run, so I swing around quickly for another pass. I shove the nose over, just ready to hit the loud button, and the M-3 is pinging me again with his popper. Crack! and the IL2 noses over and buries itself and me in the sod.

The last time I was shooting at an IL2 from a gv, I was in an osty shooting at him as he came straight towards be. I scored 5 hits on him with 37mm and he still came on and killed me with his cannon.

Getting downed by a combination of a few hits from the panzer, and a couple from the M-3, was the last straw. I logged in disgust.

Thats the way its been for me all month. Ya have em every now and again I guess.

Agree the tiger is to weak, everytime im in it i get killed by 1 pings from panzers (range dont even seems to matter ? ). the only time I survived alot of hits was once but then mostly form planes and osties.

Another thing is that I need 5 or more hits when im in a tiger for a kill, in a panzer i need 1 or on top 5 hits for killing other panzers/tigers.

about the il2, last time i was in it I was pinged (only  heard 1 ping) from behind by a spit, and my engine died imidiatly that seems a little strange but most of this is prolly because of internet connection i guess. ( Il2 have been a problem for me
cause of the 1 ping deaths for months, so i seldom fly them)

(Is all this a connection problem ? I am on DSL 4mb/1mb and net status is alwasy flat and seems ok when i checkin in game.
My ping is about 140 everytime i log on, no less no more)

Its because you're a Bishop.

Join Rookland and your troubles will cease.

Honest.

No, really.

Trust me.

Well, ok, maybe not, but at least the Tiger will be cheap.

Damage done in tank vs. tank battles (ie Tigers, Panzers, and Greyhounds) seems to be calculated by the amount of energy leftover AFTER the round has 1) traveled the distance to the target, and 2) expended the energy necessary to defeat the target's armor.  Therefore, the closer you are, the fewer penetration hits it will take to kill the enemy tank.

As far as placement of your shots, you need to remember that there are certain sweet spots that you need to aim for to get the one-hit kills.  Furthermore, forget about shooting the enemy tank in the rear hull armor: all of the damage seems to stick to the engine without penetrating into the crew compartment.  In my experience, engine damage does NOT kill an enemy tank, no matter how many shells you lob into it.

It sounds like you got flanked.  You said you shut your engine off, which implies you were immobile, and not turning.  Rule #1 of tank combat, ALWAYS have your front armor pointed at your enemy.  Exposing your vulnerable sides and rear is asking for trouble.  (This is why real-world tanks always retreat in reverse)

When hitting GV armor, location matters a lot.  A dead center hit on the front armor, or a high-angle hit on the side/rear armor is often going to fail, even in a tiger.  Vulnerable spots are 90 degree shots on the side armor, the turret ring, and the drivers view port area.  From the side, aim low through the body of the tank(Through the treads)

HE helps to disable enemy vehicles, by blowing off a track without needing a direct hit.  Very usefull against moving tigers/panzers.  Also throws off thier aim.  Also as Suave said, ALWAYS use HE on soft targets.  AP just puts a nice clean 88mm hole through an m3.

the Tiger never fails. When you are in it you will die from one frontal shot. Yet when you attack another it takes near 5 hits to kill. Still fun to burn perks in.
