Anti-ripping stuff on cds?
« on: June 27, 2003, 04:52:27 AM »
Sis recently bought some new cd's. When she tries to transfer them digitally to her minidisc, she gets some odd sounds in intervalls while listening. She then tried to make mp3's outta 'em and then transfer, but same thing.

Is this some new anti-piracy thing that has come out? Thing is, she legally owns the cds and as such she is allowed to make copies for safekeeping or for the minidisc, but she's unable to.

Haven't found anything about it on the net. What I do know is that the RIAA apparently hasn't learned what software developers have known for decades - it can, and will, be cracked, and is only a nuisance for legitimate honest users.

I could provide a sample of the sound I guess, unless it'd be illegal for my sis to send such a one to me :D.

I can't find it now, but I saw a news article quite awhile ago stating many companies were going to start making it so cds can't be copied onto a computer.

I think that's the million-dollar copy protection system that you can defeat with a felt-tip marker, isn't it?

Could you please upload a sample of the sound somewhere so we can check it? I would like to listen to that thing... just professional interest.
