You're right.

I actually got a couple of them to swirl around the moon and the planet before getting sucked into the atmosphere.  I do better when I release multiple bodies instead of one at a time; as in, click, click, click --> swirl -->swirl --> crash, crash, crash

instead of

click--> swirl--> crash
click -->swirl--> crash

I had one make a perfect 8 around the earth & moon

The fun thing is that even if you send them on gigantic orbits off the screen they will come back

You know you can give it speed by holding the mousebutton and moving the mouse? That is how I got the 8

Sweet, I think I've got one in infinite orbit.   Been spinning for a few minutes now.  Just started it close to the earth and gave it a little kick with the mouse.  It alternates between an oblong and circular orbit.  Man, I should be a rocket scientist!

Nice.
I used a sim like this in a college class on space flight.  We had the whole solar system in there with the orbits of various comets and stuff, lots of fun.

Yeah, I think I have that orbit too. Whenever the angle is too steep and you know it will hit the earth next time, the moon comes along and holds it back some...

Am I a dork for feeling worried when my "perpetual" orbit starts swinging perilously close to the atmosphere?

Oh the suspense!

Asking that question automatically makes you a dork.

I tell it like it is. :)

*Hortlund pictures Skyzzy sitting infront of his screen counting the orbits 98....99...100...101...102...*

(mine has been in orbit for close to 20 mins now)
