It's basically a RPG with many many quests and subquests revolving around a group of caribbean islands belonging to England, France, Spain, and The Netherlands.
You can do some trading, follow the main series of quests or go explore the islands, doing a living by killing or boarding ships (be it pirate or non-pirate).
The sailing is pretty straight forward, a bit unrealistic but very fun. You can strike the sails, set them in battle position (less speed, more maneouverability), or go full sail. Going against wind slows your ship down. The water effects are VERY good, with wave movement affecting your ship and the place your cannon rounds go.
Sea battles are great, with a selection of bombs, cannonballs, knipples or grapes to inflict different kinds of damage to the enemy ship.
The game can be very frustrating at first, since your character has little to no abilities and a small ship not very good in combat.
In combat you can keep your distance and try to sink the enemy ship or you can try and board it. If you do, you are on the deck of the enemy ship (or your own ship if the enemy tries to board you) and you do some fencing which consists on timing your block/attack moves.
If you capture the ship and have an officer onboard your ship, you can assign him to be the captain of the captured ship.
Well, too long for an introduction... just give it a try
