Camo- I don't think thats quite right. While your correct the bathtub only covered the pilot and engine (and the gunner on all M3 models were open) the plane by no means was an easy mark for Cannon shells. The fueselage was given the same leak proofed fuel tank system the La5 recieved and the struts for the wings were heavily reinforced and had protective tubes around control lines.

This is how they still made it home with square meters of material missing from the wing where 20mm shells had peeled the wing covering almost right off without destroying the wing. Shrapnel from cannon shells couldn't do fatal damage as easily and MG bullets were almost useless unless they managed to hit the pilot or penetrate the "bathtub".

IIRC the Finnish pilots had many notes on how to deal with this plane, most insisting the only good shot was to concentrate fire into the wing root to cause strucural failure (The wing was very heavy, I imagine enough damage and it just came right off) or to come in from above and fire through the top of the canopy.

According to Erich Hartmann's bio he (Hartmann) would attack IL-2s from a low 6 position and concentrate his fire on the oil-cooler. According to him that was the most vulnerable part of the plane and (for a good shot and from a very close distance) the best way to quickly down a Sturmovik.

In this bio the Sturmovik is also credited with being the toughest bird on the eastern front. Some german pilots claimed that they saw their 20mmm shells bouncing off IL-2s.

BTW: The new release date for IL-2 is November 2001

Here's what a finnish WW2 veteran told about shooting down IL-2's in a recent interview:

Quote
One year after finishing the course (Air Combat School), he had a Mannerheim cross on his chest.  In three weeks, he had shot down 16 IL-2's in his Messerschmitt.  Sturmoviks were ground attack airplanes which shot both forward and back, since they had a rear gunner.

He told me that on top of the engine, there was a spot: if you hit there, the plane would go down for sure. The wing root was another good place to shoot.

Coming soon to a Finnish WW2 history website near you!
