Watch the film clips, they do have someone follow them around with a video camera and give them the tape at the end of the day.  And I think the guy who runs it explained it like this:  "Well, when you're out hunting deer, the deer aren't wearing football helmets or shoulder pads.  So our girls don't either."

In reading the revelation on snopes.com, I clicked on "Joey Skaggs" and got a much better story about offers by a Korean company to purchase dogs from animal shelters.

The idea for the sting came from Joey Skaggs, a man who has been the bane of the media for thirty years.

Skaggs sees himself as a performance artist on a mission. Where others use canvas and paint, he uses telephones and fax machines. His medium of choice is the imaginative prank. His messages often get lost in the fallout over his pranks , but they are always there. And you usually don't have to look very far for them.

When I read about the dog island someone set up off the FL coast as a private, human-free refuge for dogs "liberated" from their slave-like lives as household pets, the thing that bothered me the most was that someone was willing to pony up the dough for these wackos - what a waste of funds that could have gone to human charity.  But that wasn't all - they were happily promoting the fact that FL taxpayer's money was soon on the way!
Reading this site again I laugh cause
a:  I was fooled by such a stupid premise, but was willing to chalk it up to "stupid hippie crap".  
b: it is pretty well done, not over the top at all, but every once in awhile there's something that makes you go "what? who the hell are these people?" that should have tipped me off.

example (from the FAQ):
Q:  My dog is very high strung and often gets into fights with other dogs. I can control this now, but what happens when fights break out on the island?
