266 vr 333 FSB and Sys speeds

since i figured out that my system is running at 266 and not 333 due to the AMD xp 2200 (locked at 266) i was wondering how much of a change i would see if i bought a AMD XP2500 (unlocked) so i could run the system (mem. and FSB) at 333
HOW much of a difference would i see in FPS and over all speed of my system?

Not much at all (unless you plan on doing serious overclocking, the 2500+ is the best AMD CPU for this right now).  Certainly not enough to be worth the investment in the CPU plus the DDR333 memory.

well Bloom i have DDR400 mem already. Problem is that because of the CPU everything is running at 266 Memory band width and FSB!
Thats why im thinking maybe that with a 2500/2600/ that run @ 333  i might get better performance.

People tell me i should be getting alot more out of my system than i am.
still top FPS in AH are 60 and low end is 20's

my system specs:

Win xp pro (just did a fresh install)
AMD 2200 Xp
512 ddr 3200 cl2.5
ati 9700 PRO (standards if not less quality more preformance settings)
sound blaster gamer 5.1

With newest ATI catalyst 3.4 drivers

IMO, u you should be getting better FPS than that I would think.

I'm running 1024x768 4X AA and getting no less than 100 FPS at any time .  Unless it is a SERIOUS low-alt furball (I mean vulch-fest ) with  everything smoking.  Then I might drop into the 80's

Running an xp2500 barton at the 266 setting along with pc3200 ram with a TI4600 card.

If I run 1280 x 1024, then I'll drop into the 60's to mid 40's in heavy action.  Unfortunately, I don't like the higher res's as I can't see the planes

I think you still have a bottle neck someplace...  The xp2500 barton is an overclock monster tho...  I had it running at an xp2800 with absolutely no issues.  Just didn't see the need to keep it there.

Sounds like you have vertical sync enabled and the fps is being limited by this.
Although i believe there have been problems with XP sticking at a 60hz refresh rate which would also explain this.
There are various fixes.

it will go over 60 fps but not stay there (like if im looking up or behind me it might to into the 70's)
Yes Vsync is enabled all AGP fastwrites are off and it has to run at AGP 4x for some dame reason.

Im thinking about buying a XP 2500 barton w/ 333 fsb
but im not sure if it worth it or what "other" bottle neck might be hindering my system.
Also the chipset on my mobo is the VIA KT400 (original not A)

well i picked up a 2500 ($120 local store ) its a little faster with the bus speeds all set at 333.
im getting a few more FPS! but its not light and day!


So MODAS what setting in bios did you use to over clock it up to 2800?

running my barton 2500(1.8 ghz)  @ 3200(2.2 ghz) 11(multipiler)x200(fbs)

Been runnin my xp1700 at 2.2ghz for about 6 months now, havent had a single issue yet.  Newegg is selling those Bartons for pretty cheap now.  If I run 11x200FSB and memory that is running at FSB speed does that mean I essentially have a Barton?

the board is an ASUS A7V8X.

the mutliplier is set @ 11 already! (basic setting) do i just need to up the FSB and memory settings?
do i up the voltage?

LOl i have know idea what to do! maybe i shouldn't F. with it!  LOL

I get a 90 fps vsync enabled - limit of monitor refresh at 1280x1024 with aa 4x and af set to zero

XP2600 running 266 fsb
ATI 9800 with latest drivers

directx 9.0b

seemed to get a few more fps after running that ati tweaker linked on this bbs

Pfunk, the Bartons also have 512 kB of L2 cache, vs 256 kB in the Throughbred.

When you hear names like Barton, Palomino, Throughbred, Thunderbird, Clawhammer, Spitfire, Northwood, Willamette, Prescott, etc associated with CPUs what you are hearing is the internal company names for different designs.

In the Athlon XP line there are Palominos, Throughbred A & B, and Bartons.

yeah, newegg had a 2500 barton for $90 (retail box) and free shipping, IIRC.

Thinking about upgrading for same reasons as boxboy (everything else can do 333, xp1900 is stuck at 266.)  I figure I can also crank the 2500 up like whels did.  2.2ghz would be a significant improvement over the 1.6ghz of my 1900, plus the larger cache on the barton core.

I figured that was the only difference, IMO for me it isnt worth spending $90 to get a 256kB upgrade in L2 cache I cant see it making $90 worth of an improvement over my current chip
