<- impressed i figured it out .. but question??
« on: July 25, 2003, 06:44:32 PM »
ok background:

nothing changed in last 3 days on my PC but i booted up today to a fatal OE exception with WIN98se.

0347:00001966

oh crap

got the system up in safe mode fine.

tried again.... Fatal OE 0347:00001966

did a selective startup bypassing javasup.vxd and i'm up and running.

went to MS knowledgebase and looked up the error and javasup.vxt to find nothing helpful :(

removed the file from c:\windows\system and booted... got error that file javasup.vxd in system.ini not found. replace or uninstall press any key to continue.

fatal OE 0347:00001966

???? file is gone ... how can it cause the problem

used Win98se CD to extract a new version of file and WHOOOT im up and running smoother than ever :D

so how did the file go bad?!?! or what really happened?!?

any thoughts?

I always had problems with windows 98, seemed like it killed itself over a short amount of time.

I'll second that Estes
seemed like I formated every 6 or 7 months with 98.  I've been running xp home since about 1 month after it's release.  no major problems, still on the same install

Its called OS install ROT...it happens to 95 and 98...(me comes rotten and requires no time to fail).   As a general rule, if you plan on running 98 and not upgrading to XP, you should plan on reinstalling fresh every 500 hours or so of use....that was once ever 4 months for me.  :D

use or up time?

if uptime whoa thats like every month for me. i cant do that .. WAY too many progs installed. last re-format took 2 days of 6-8 hrs work to get up and running with all programs windows updates and virus patches installed.

im going on about 8-9 months of 98se use. never had a problem before.

i know about the XP thing ... im broke :( i want a legit copy... actually need one for school (their software needs a full up to date all service pack XP OS to work.) gonna have to not eat for a few days and get XP.

the spend countless hours gettin set up  grrrr

If you need it for school take a trip to your schools book store and see if they have any. My last semester in college you could get an educational license of XP Pro and Office XP Pro for $25 each.

Pff XP installs are very easy none of that Win98 crap, install this driver restart, install that driver, huh that driver cause conflict with another driver.  XP install will take you no longer than an hour and you wont have to install a single driver.  Its a bootable CD so put it in drive restart computer and change your boot order in BIOS and let it do its thing.

I don't agree with that Pfunk.  By the time you install, download updates, and get everything configured so you can install your applications, it should take about 4 hours, at least.

viper .. not a school like that. its a training center for getting IT certs.

pfunk .. im talking about the 100+ programs i have installed. the 50+ codecs for media played. so on.

a couple of the games i have take oved 20min alone to load all the info off 2 disks. (i have 3 games like that = 60 min of sitting there just for that)

dont forget the 2-3 hours formatting a 80gb and 30gb hard drive from scratch (we are talking a Clean install)

JB73 is right, try installing FS2004, 4 discs later and your wondering if your gonna need another HD.

JB email me if you interested in a legit copy of XP.

I didn't do the clean install.  just did the upgrade thing. I figured it would crash hard eventually and need reloading, but that it would be easier to handle if I changed everything to xp's file system via the upgrade then back up my important stuff. then whenever it crashed I could always do a clean install then.

so far the crsh never came. still running on the upgradeed install (not sure when I got it, at least 18 months ago)
