Well guess what. I might be visiting my Californian pistol packing friend in Santa Barbara in October, and as that's not more than about 200 miles from San José... if Lazs is going to the con, it would save me traipsing all the way to Dixon afterwards, or wherever he has his whinery. But someone had better tell GTOra2. I'm on his ignore list, and if he hears that I might be there he'll want to change his mind about coming himself - or else bring a machine gun to shoot me. I'd better check with AmEx to see if my travel insurance covers me for hanging out with you guys.
Tell me, are we all going to bury the hatchet? Seems that this BBS brings out the worst in all of us. Never had this worry at any of the other flightsim cons I've been to.
Speaking from experience, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I've said worse things to lazs via a forum (in the distant, stupid, WB 'past') than you will ever say and if the '2% winner' actually comes in and I can be in town for a day I'm looking forward to meeting the guy in person. I've been to 2 WB conventions and I never saw any - *any* - ill will amongst the actual convention attendees. I've never even seen 'neutral' behavior - the default is that when you see someone 'in person' the first time, you buy them a drink. Or 3 drinks if it's 'peril' from Australia from WB (By the way, anyone know what ever happened to that guy? Great guy - police officer in Australia...if anyone knows anything let me know if you can).
But do be prepared for some type of violence for certain. Some examples:
1. I've seen a bunch of 'live roleplayers' almost kill 'drex' because he was grossly inaccurate in roleplaying how a 7' tall vampire would mate with a sheep.
2. I've seen 'mvp1' (Miguel, former WB 'JG 14' guy) almost go over the bar at a bartender because the bartender wouldn't give him any more JM (that's justifiable violence, but still violence).
3. Members of the WB 4th F.G. always slash or icepick the tires of every German sports car at any con they attend (I guess they're thinking "If you can't take 'em in WB, take 'em anywhere you can")(This is a joke, any new 4th F.G. member don't start loading guns in preparation for a 2% chance of atomizing me at FunkedUps 'suare').
You'll have a great time if you go. The first WB convention I went to I was a little concerned. On the flight there I kept thinking "I'm going to be surrounded by geeks". Then I got there and "No worries, everyone is fairly 'normal' looking". I haven't yet figured out if this means I'm a geek or not. Considering the # of times I saw a PS2 with a bunch of M4s or G36s in close proximity during the past couple of years I'm beginning to think that everyone is a geek when no one is looking.
