Target Ware (1st Impressions)

Right off the bat, if you're not computer adroit, get some help. You're gona need it to get set up. Fortunately for me, I have a 17 yr old that got me up and running. Had it not been for him, I'd have given up in disgust. If you know all about modifying ini files, you're gonna do alright.

The ingame setup menu is basic to say the least. A tab for you to log on, and to calibrate your game controllers. (Hint: just cause you get them calibrated, don't mean they will respond in game. You will have to do this later in a target ware file out of game.) While you're in the calibration screen, make note of the numbers that are highlighted when pressing any of the buttons on your controllers.

Once you've made these notes, exit setup, exit the game. Right click Target ware icon, properties, then find target. Look for the TW_config folder and open it up. Click on the keymapper tab. Remember those notes you made about which number was assigned to which button on your controllers? This is where you assign those buttons the functions you desire.

Once you've accomplished that, click on the input devices tab. Here is where you assign control inputs to your controller devices.  None of your joystick, throttle, or rudder pedals will work in game until you have performed this step.

Now your ready to go online and check the game out.

I joined a beta server, signed up to fly allied, selected a mission, and bam! I'm in a SBD (air start) headed for a Jap island stronghold.

No auto pilot, so I carefully take a look at the dashboard to figure out which guages are where. Some guages can't be seen looking straight ahead, so ya gotta look down a little. Track ir is supported so you can use the mouse for that, or if you did the config right, use a combo of views to look at those guages.

Ok, got the dials and switches doped out, time to check the map and see where I'm going. F4 superimposes this over the screen. There's my route, waypoints, and target, and a bright red arrow indicating my position. Btw the direction of the arrow in no way indicates the direction you're traveling. It just points to the spot on the map you occupy. You gotta figure the heading, and look at your compass.

Now, how does this puppy handle? Whoops! Woof-da, stalls come on quick, with a harsh rattling sound, and a mushyness to the controls. Do not try yanking and banking in here folks. Also very easy to over shoot control imputs. Rolling for example, ya gotta put in a little opposite to stop where ya want. Rudder inputs create instant radical slewing which will rock the plane back and forth if the rudder is just centered without reverse input to stop.

Target coming up, I see some little gray squares floating around (planes), and some dark squares on the ground (targets). No range indicators on cons, just a red icon as to plane type for enemies, and a name for friendlies. Don't know the range these icons turn on at. No info at all on what the ground targets consist of, but a couple of them started shooting at me as I got lower in my dive. Thought I'd drop an egg on them so I weav'd toward one, and when I thought the alt was right, I lined the bugger up in the gunsight and pickeled off a bomb. Gently but firmly pulling back on the stick caused the screen to fade to black (no initial tunnel vision here). Got a server message that AKWeav had destroyed an AI gun.:D

Look behind me, oops got a couple of A6Ms on my butt, hey! they got huge floats hanging under them. One is shooting! My plane shakes with hits, no clue to any damage, but shes still handling ok. Roll over on my back and head for the deck, to odd looking zekes following. pull out and go into a left climbing turn then angle back to the deck, and hang the tightest righthand level turn I dare. I'm rewarded by one of the zekes impacting the water and exploding trying to follow my right turn. The other guy is a little smarter pulling a high yo yo, but over shoots on the pass giving me an oppertunity to plink him some. But he's got better acceleration than me, and comes around again from the left, and starts peppering me from behind. I try scissoring, but run out of E quickly and stall into the water.

Oops, wife hollering about the steaks on the BBQ. Be back with more later.

man it amazing at the different experiences folks will have with the same game.

Set up was easy (rtfm :)). I had remapped mixture and forgot to witch button so I found myself unable to start the eng. Quickly figured that out.

FM wise

Very easy I thought. I didnt stall (I flew rufe, a6m2, f4f, kate). Except for the over done "torque" and "out of trim" craziness it was straight forward turn and burn for me.

I am just against having to "look down" to see the guages. IMHO its too stupid to have to actually create an artificial movement to read the guages. In rl a quick glance provided you are familiar with the cockpit  layout. With Track ir its much easier but still I just dont like it.

I never even look at my guages in ah except to check fuel. There really is no reason to. But with a CEM like in IL2 FB everything I need to see is right there (except russ planes but I dont fly umm :p).

I though the terrain was just terrible.

The plane models themselves are adequate, the cockpit models are far better then ah.

Gunnery is ok. Tracers suck, the 4 pixel black squares suck. I assume most of this is placeholder stuff and if not I am sure some one will come up with their own fix.

I guess the good thing is that with all the sucky aspects they can be "changed" and fixed" by some one who takes the time to do it.

I aint that guy :p

But should it get better or fixes come I will check it out then. Right now its a mix between wwiiol, bf1942 and AW. If thats youyr thing go for it.

Its worth the download.

Interesting, need some more setup work yet, and joystick is going to take some fine tuning.

Got 100% better when I added 0.3 deadband to all axis. (Was overcontrolling badly before I even got to the springs)

Somehow it just doesn't "feel" like flying.

Feels like your in a 4" plane glued to an invisible basketball.

Suckers constantly trying to slip off left, right, front, etc.

Hard to get it to stabilse out.

More later.

Lots of potential here.

Thanks for the reviews.  I read them while downloading the Rabaul add on. I found hittin CTRL ESC brings me back to desktop letting me do other things while the file of unkown size downloads at who knows what bit rate and for who knows how long. Anyway. I'm looking foward to trying Korea or later (Verm got my hopes up BIG after seeing his A4 Skyhawk screenshot) but I figure I'll play with Rabaul (when I get a chance) to at least figure out the interface and the qirks of the Targetware program.  Ala carte sims is not my thing so I'm hoping the "creative" types get thier butts in gear and start modding like heck for Rabaul (and Korea soon, I hope).

I agree...The TERRAIN SUXS.  The water Textures are just bad.  I mean this is the Pacific right?  Like 90% water right?  Cockpits are very good.  Very limited plane-set w/ allready -"long in the tooth"- GFX engine means AHII will rule.  I hope it gets some steam rolling though....would be nice to see somebody make it.  Oh ya-did I mention the Lighting ?  Its pretty bad as well.

Set up was easy

Like I said, if you're accomplished with that kind of thing, no sweat. For me it wouldn't have happened without help from my kid. The setup for AH is easy for some, challanging for others. Took me a couple of years to become comfortable with it. How many games do you need to go into the files to configure? Most have an ingame setup for the computer ignorant like me.;)

Anyway, on with my impressions.

Graphics: Terrain reminded me of the later versions of AW, passable but lacking. Then again it is a beta.

Plane graphics are slightly similar to BF1942 to me, except with moving control surfaces, and better fight instrumentation (though they are hard to read because of small size).

Tracers take me back to AW in a big way, except they are formed of dashes rather then dots. No clue if you're hitting anything or not as nothing seems to fall off, and no hit sprites.

Flight model: I'm no RL pilot so I can't attest as to which is truer, AH or TW. They are different for sure. TW seems to be closer to WB, but with out the mushyness. Not too sure about a plane's nose bobbing back and forth after kicking the rudder one way and centering it again. Ground take offs are an eye opener. Man, when that tail wheel comes off the ground, be ready with that rudder, but be gentle with it too. When you raise your gear, your canopy closes too. That might be reconfigurable, have to get the kid to check it out.

ACM: Only had a couple of engagements. Definetly wasn't any stick stirring here. Tracking the enemy looked more like the gun footage I've seen, with the target plane makeing manouvers as you would expect them to. None of the wild dancing jigs you'll sometimes see it AH.

Comms: No voice, four different text channels, very easy to use, except your plane is basicly out of control while typing (unless you can type quickly with one hand)

Game performance: I run a P4, 2.8ghz, with a g-force 4 128meg card, connex via cable modem. FPS was as high as 65, and never dropped below 40. No noticeable lag issues, but then again, I think there were only 30-40 people on at the time.

Conclusion: It's not going to replace AH for me for the forseeable future. It's kinda fun cause of the newness, so I dink around with it for a while. Worth the DL, and possible setup headaches (for some:rolleyes: ). Certainly a change of pace.
