John J. McMullen Associates, inc. (JJMA), A leading U.S. naval architect / marine engineering firm, announced the award on July 17th, 2002 of a $10million contract to the Raytheon led team for preliminary design of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). The ship, as part of the DD(X) family of ships, is intended to be a light, high-speed surface combatant capable of fighting intense battles in Littoral waters.
Other team members include Norwegian shipbuilder, UMOE Mandal, Goodyear Engineered Polymer Products Division and Atlantic Marine inc. Three contracts were awarded from among six bidders. At the conclusion of this phase, one or two teams will be chosen to continue into the contract design and build phases of the program.
It looks kinda like Skjold but bigger
