Someone pinch me ... its not April 1 is it?

Playnet, CRS and the Special Events Team (SET) are pleased to announce the beginning of the World War II Online Special Events program.

About Special Events
The special events program is divided into three categories; scenarios, tournaments and player-made. All events will be held on a dedicated server cluster that will not interrupt gameplay on the campaign server. The program team is made up of CRS and Playnet staff as well as player-volunteers. The program is set to launch with a small test event the week of August 18th with the first large-scale scenario set to follow shortly after that.

Scenarios will often be historical re-creations on a large scale with more than one frame (segment) making up the event. Scenarios take a lot of planning and organization by staff and members of the SET to execute. Specific rule sets and scoring data will be combined to force victory conditions at the end of each frame. Every loss and every victory will count towards the final result. It may be even more important to simply stay alive than it will be to take down the enemy! Depending on their success, we may offer scenarios as often as once a month. Scenarios will require sign-up through the new events website and the purchase of event tickets which are expected to be priced at $2 to $3 per frame.

Hmm... I'm not sure I find anything inherently wrong with that.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Do know the number of no-shows in ah scenarios?

If anything thats good news.

Umm, pay for a historical scenario in a (cough) historical game?

Umm, the weapons currently modelled only allow for an extremely limited range of scenarios.

Umm, the a-historical modelling of some weapons and vehicles.

At best its going to be like a Squad Ops where all sorts of gear is 'substituted'.

Then they want you to pay for it?

I don't look at WWIIonline so much as a "historical" game, any more than the MA here is historical. If you want to recreate specific historical battles, you have to do that through scenarios.

Subs are a more often than not a neccessary evil that have been a part of almost every (if not every) scenario Aces High has ever had. You need to have a LOT of stuff modelled before you find that you can run a historical scenario without substitutions.

Most of the points you make you can say the same for Aces High. The only difference being that they're charging money for their scenarios. I'll second Batz's comment - with the amount of no-shows, this might prove to be a good move.

What are you going to recreate with P2's, P38Ts, PIIIFs and H's?

Like I said, I don't think I find anything inherently wrong with charging for scenarios...

As for whether or not the scenarios they put on are worth paying for, that's another matter.

WWIIOL has sold itself as being a real time battle that best depicts WW2 combat.  Seems they have to have scenarios to actually do that... just like any other game.  Of course, with one small exception... I can't think of a single other game that charges for the scenarios.

AH had the same plan in the past. It was never implemented but i doubt if it was forgotten. Idea is to make it expensive enough so that people don't sign up mindlessly, yet it's not scaring people off. Dollar, 2 or something..

I remember that and I still think it's a good idea.

The "no shows" makes life a real pain in the back-side for the CM's. It's the "no shows" that are the primary reason for delays.

Simulating WWII combat is not the same as recreating a historical setup.

WWIIOL simulates combat very well, but it would take an event to recreate a historical battle.  Charging for it?  Dunno, but no-shows are a *****.

Now describe ah scenarios, Remember big week? b17s flying across Europe to strafe factories with their buff guns. Remember AK (typh for beaufighters). Geesh I could go on.

Theres one in the works that will have you choking.

I'll punt this up when its announced.

2 dollar ticket for ah frames would be a good thing.

Would you be in knowing you've paid $3 just to be the first casualty?

AH special-events are not perfect. But the difference is you don't have to pay an additional $9-$12 per month to be in them (Scenarios, ToD, KoTH etc).

LOL!

First off... charging $2 for an AH scenerio would definately make the CM's job easier.  The 10 people that show up would most likely agree that it's the smoothest scenario they've ever been in.

Secondly,

There is no way that any sim around today can recreate a historical setup.  You make sacrifices and concessions simply out of necessity.  It's just a matter of how many.  One thing is given, scenarios will always be LESS realistic simply because you know exactly what's coming.  This is because someone attempted to recreate an event by completely forgetting that putting a bunch of people together on a computer game and giving them a few of the tools used in the "event" does nothing to actually simulate the event.

Bah... I could go off on scenarios and realism for a long time.  Alot of work goes into a few minutes of predictable battle.  The only thing that would make them worse is if someone decided to charge for them.
