In 1902, Britain and Japan signed a Naval Alliance. Two more agreements would follow over the next 20 years. British advisors helped develop Japanese Naval forces thoughout this period. By the mid-20's, Britain realized Japan's true intentions regarding China and broke relations with Japan. British military doctrine had been similar in many ways to the Samuri tradition and the IJN combined the two to form its Navy. In many ways, Japan pioneered Naval aviation.
April 5, 1942, Japan invades Ceylon. Sqn/ldr Len Burchill spotted the Japanese fleet and warned Koggala Air base of an impending invasion. Though shot down, he is refered to as the "saviour of Ceylon."
This becomes the basis for the Saviour of Ceylon.
