My only gripe about TIVO and DishPVR is they are sticking it to you so sneakily you don't realise it. Yes, you can edit commercials. Some VCR's now have that. But you can't remove and keep the media as you would with a VCR, it's stored on the Harddrive. When the HD is full ya gotta erase something or dub to VCR. That's OK..I'm sure later models will have some sort of removable drives.  And they only work with Digital Signals. Unless you have Digital Cable or Sattelite they won't work. Here's the sneaky part, you have to pay a monthly subscription. You pay them not to watch the commercials. How great is the mind that came up with that? I need to figure out how to get people to pay me to ignore me. I'd make a small fortune of the BBS alone. :D

Oh, don't get me started on Local commercials. If you have ever lived in a Small market area, you KNOW what I'm talking about. Just because you own a business, does not make you photogenic, interesting, or let me be especially clear on this point...FUNNY!

I can honestly say that now commercial has ever made me go buy the product it advertises.  I pick and choose my brands based on experience and or pricing.  Now that Honda commercial this past summer was frikkin AMAZING.  The one with all the parts in a domino like run?  That was very cool.

Oh yeah, remember one thing, when you see a commercial, the SAME commercial, about 10 - 15 times a day you can't help but remember it.

Incorrect about a couple things about PVRs, rpm.  The only Tivos that only work on digital signals are the ones built into DirectTV.

Most Tivos and ReplayTVs have video encoders.  I have analog cable, and my replaytv cheerfully encodes my video as MPEG2 and stores it ont he hard drive.

Removable drives are a gripe?  C'mon, get real.  That's what the automated offload-to-VHS functions are for.  You pop in a cassette and tell it to save to VHS and walk off.  It controls your VCR and automatically hits record and play, then stop and stop at the end.

Finally, just because YOU pay a subscription to get PVR functionality does not mean that everyone does.  I don't pay a subscription for my ReplayTV, and plenty of Tivo users don't either if they pay the $250 lifetime fee.  Oh, and there are free PVR programs so you can convert your computer to a PVR that don't charge anything at all:

The WORST commercial is on the Fox News channel, Christy Lane's Christian album add, with her amazing hit "One Day At A Time" and  "Footprints".

Not that Im against Christian music, but this stuff makes me wanna puke.  The commercial is frequent and it burns into one's brain.

Apparently, they have made some improvements since I last looked at them. A "Zip" type drive or DVD burner will be the next thing needed.

How bout the Computer Professor?

I smile every time he says-

"Please, try my product"

He's prolly making boat loads of cash, but gimme a break, he sounds like hes gonna cry everytime I hear it.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

In Chicago, the one I remember was the Empire carpets commercial, which ran for years and years and years... probably still running. The jingle was....

5-8-0, 2-3-hundred, Empire!

Thankfully I'm seeing less and less of it, but the absolute most irritating trend in advertising imho was the relentless "It's about" type commercials.

SO many ads used the formula... Basically, you're looking at a montage of video, while the voice-over says:

"It's about... freedom.
It's about... the pride in a job well done.
"It's about... never having to sell yourself short."

......... and on and on........

"It's about... confidence.
It's about... going that extra mile."

.........then finally, the company name. Say....

"Prudential".

That's it.

"It's about...  It's about...  It's about... It's about... It's about... Johnson & Johnson."

"It's about...  It's about...  It's about... It's about... It's about... Ford."

Aargh it drives me freakin' nuts when these come on. Because... what the hell is that supposed to mean? It's about. It's about. Well... WHAT'S about?! Really! WHAT'S about? It makes literally no sense whatsoever. At all. Really. What's about? Ugh.

Know where these spawned from? Funilly enough, Bob Dole speeches during the '96 campain. He coined the whole thing. His speeches went on and on like this. "It's about integrity.".... or "It's about decency." One after another after another, only broken up by the odd "This president business... it's serious business". Didn't make any sense then, and it still didn't when the agencies co-opted this folksy nonsense and milked it for all it's worth. Which aint much.

For me, it's the Mitsubishi commercial, where the girl looks like she's having a fit, while some weirdo music is playing in the background.:D

The computer professor is one of those 30 minute commercials.  We're talking about the short, in between movie commercials.:D

The weirdo music is "Horndog" by Overseer. I'm not really into techno, but this one is kinda cool.

6 years in Okinawa with only one english speaking tv channel and only military produced "commercials" made us happy to get a tape from the states with commercials on them.

The funnier military produced "commercials" were the ones made by the Jarhea... er, Marines, to teach their guys how to write a check or manage their money. Of course we occasionally watched the local Okinawan TV but never learned to speak Japanese well enough to enjoy more than the occasional slapstick comedy.
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.
