While i was bored
« on: September 14, 2003, 04:09:15 PM »
I decided to maximise the response and controllability from my Cougar Hotas.
I do this in a Panzer, I used the .target command at various ranges until i tweaked and perfected stick config.

It suddenly occured to me that theres a whole new aspect to AH we have not explored TARGET SHOOTING :)

IE  Best grouping and number of shots for a given time period over different ranges.

For example clock starts when in main turret view but not target aligned. first round at .target 1000, as soon as time elapsed (or a given number of shots) change to target 2000 (fire away ) then change to .target 3000.

Well you get the idea then zoom in to either .target 100 or 50 to judge the grouping.

As long as you have film running all the time to record i figured it would be workable.

Until i realised that when filming in a panzer,

1. You cannot view the film from the main guns position.
2. You cannot see the target either.

And yes i was very bored to get to the point of actually posting this.

I wanted to perfect my control near centre of joystick.
I have this thing about wanting totally smooth, progressive and predictable control from the centre position.
And i mean from the centre, without having a dead spot as i find having a dead spot in itself means you usually start moving with a jerk rather than progressively.

After fiddling tonight  i now have pixel perfect control when aligning panzer main gun zoomed fully in on a 2k target.

For example in profile i can align the end of the barrel of a field gun at 2k perfectly every time without overcorrecting.

Or using the .target command i can put succesive shells through the same hole, well at least until you zoom the target right in :)

And this is being realigned on target before the shell has finished reloading.

Sounds reasonable.

Would you care to write up a "how to"?; as I find my cougar does have a slight jerkyness moving from centre; which does lead to a slight nose bounce which I'dlike to eliminate.

Cavalier,  you have Hall Effect Sensors in place of the stock pots?

Yes i do have the hall effect sensors fitted.

However it still reacts exactly the same as standard pots just no spiking with the HE's.

Ref the pixel perfect control claim, literally at 1600 res zoomed all the way in i can pitch the main gun up or down and watching the horizon line see the view going up pixel line at a time.

Its just a pity that i really cant be asked to drive the GV war in AH, but fine control whether its in plane or GV has to be a good thing.

And for Seeker.

In AH setup i have all pitch and aeleron response zones at 100% right across the board.
Dead zone and damper are at zero.  (one exception will come to that later).

In Cougar control panel,

Curve for X and Y axes is at -2  (thats minus 2)

Dead zone for Y axes is at zero.

However because i have a bit of slop near centre i have the dead zone for X axes at 2.

Load up AH config in CCP, in the calibration section, under calibration mode click the auto calibration button.

Now select set centre positions and only tick the X and Y axes,  rudders and Ant and Rng, follow instructions to save.

Btw i never use the throttle option when doing above, as i did it once and ended up with a central dead spot in the throttle !

Go into AH and calibrate again within the game and save it.

Now it should be good to go, however with mine i found the pitch axes would drift slightly, again due to some slop in the stick.

To cure this i added a fraction of dead spot in the AH pitch axes control.

Adding the dead spot in CCP was not as effective and definitely not as smooth at first take up of movement.

It works for me, no gaurantees for you of course but last time i offered similar suggestions people posted they did not have this problem until they tried my settings and suddenly it worked much better :)
