AHII is already costing me money..
« on: September 20, 2003, 07:54:53 PM »
Well, I started the upgrade today, and I thought I would share a short conversation I had with Skuzzy.

The new graphics on AHII are going to require a little more horsepower is you plan on enjoying them.

Apparently, if you want to see explosions, and tracers and many effects with the maximum realism, your going to need a higher end system.

Otherwise, you'll still run AHII but with the older or less realistic graphics. Now, if this is old news to you, please excuse me.

I am simply posting this for those who may not already be aware, like I was.

Anyway, I'm going up to 512 megs of RAM, and the GEforce II card is going to be replaced with one of 2 Skuzzy recommended. (I wrote it down somewhere, but can't find it now.) One was something like an ATI 4200 pro, or something.

hyena; do NOT buy a geforce FX. Waste of money. The radeon 97 or 9800 would be a better choice if you're going to that level. The geforce4's are still ok.

Using an ATI 9700 and never had any stutter problems with it. Love it to death actually.

Good alternative to 9700 and 9800 is 9600 or 9500 aswell, ATI has got several cards, budget and non budget right in the top at the moment.

just my 2 cents...I have an ATI Radeon 9700 (128mb); been very happy with it.

I've been wondering if I'm going to have to upgrade my system RAM from 256megs to 512 megs.  (system is a P4, 2.4 Gig)

Yeah, got an Ati 9700 pro. Hasn't been without it's pains though.

Glad to see people like muckmaw are thinking finally about upgrading their 486DX40's with 16Mb of memory... :D

HTC teamed up with a PC store and worked up a deal on a killer system tweaked and tuned to play AH2, would you buy it?

I've had my system 2 years now and it has served me well, but due to the large number of posts I've read concerning the PC hardware necessary to fully enjoy AH2 and given the fact my vid card won't handle Warcraft III Reign of Chaos, it's time for something new.

I wonder if HTC will put up a list of recommended hardware? Or have they already done so and I missed it?

I've been holding out to see if this 64 bit processor from AMD would ignite the gaming world and produce a whole new generation of hardware and software. Would be such a waste to buy 32 bit stuff and have to upgrade 6 months later.

Either way, in the end, I'll probably drop a months overtime on a box and new components. Yes, partly to enjoy AH2 but mostly cuz I JUST WANT ONE :D

New Abit MB that let's me reuse my old PC133 memory as well as the vid and graphics cards? $75.00

New retail Antec case, AMD 2400+ CPU w/heatsink,fan and free shipping? $185.

Being able to finally play all the games that until now I could only look at screenshots of? Priceless!

I found the paper!

Skuzzy said, because I have a 1.9 gig machine, and would not benefit from more powerful cards, I should get either:

Nvidia TI4200 or above (Does this mean 4201?)

or

ATI 9600 Pro.

Thoughts? Comments?

Hard to install? Someone said something about discharging myself. Last time I did that, I went through a box of Kleenex.

Heh...box of Kleenex :D

I bought the 9500 a few months back and my framerates were ok here and that 'other' sim. Can't play Warcraft III though, Blizzard is promising a patch soon to fix this.

I had my sights set on a ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 MB Graphics Card hoping I could avoid upgrades for a while. 300 bucks but the reviews on it say its worth it. If the 9600 comes close with half the ram I may reconsider.

A close friend is trying to steer me to an Nvidia board.

So hard to decide.....
