Borrow your Dad's mower and hit the streets knocking on doors. You oughta be able to make $20-$25 a yard. I did this when I was young and got all the work I could handle.

Don't wait for something to come to you, get aggressive. Just the experience of trying is valuable.

This is what I did durring the summers when I was 12 and 13.  I had a good friend and we teamed up.  We had it down pat and could do a normal yard in about 30min to an hour.  Corner lots took a little over an hour, but we got $50 for those :) We cut 5 yards a day monday through friday.   We started at about 7 am and were at astroworld by noon everyday but monday because it was closed.  When we got to Astroworld we really enjoyed spending the $50 we each had earned that morning.

Never had to ask mom for money either.  I'll never forget the argument we had when I was trying to buy my own season pass to astroworld, and she insisted on paying for it.  :D

Hehe, well, it was the '60s. Think the lowest I ever charged was $2. Got $5 more often than not.

With ya Udie, no better feeling for a kid, or an adult for that matter, than being financially independent. Being aggressive and working hard to get it makes it just that much more satisfying.

If you are all about the yard work, contact a local real estate company.  I did this when i was about 14.  Often times when people move without selling their old house first (or when the bank takes it back) no one is there to take care of the yard.

The lot still has to look good for prospective buyers and the real estate people have to find someone to keep it looking like a nice place.

When i was doing this I made 20 bucks per lot per week.  And I always had at least 5 lots on the go.

One week and there is your video card, keep it up and 2 more gets you a new chip and mobo.

You'll be alright son.

You should be able to get a work permit at your age, if you are 14 or 15, and this will allow you to work for a business so that if you put a year or two into a certain place - you'll get a raise or two instead of always making the same amount.

I'd recommend a hardware store, thats where I started out. You learn a lot about word working, plumbing, what hardware to use (screws, nails, bolts, washers, etc) and make money(minimum wage) doing it. Keeps you in shape too, hauling around 8'x4' plywood sheets, or 3/4" thick 8'x4' drywall sheets all day is a pretty good workout. There's also going to be a lot of loading and unloading cement/concrete/sand bags that range from 20lbs to 80lbs. Thats if you go for a small store though, I'm not sure about something like Home Depot.
