Title IX says something about equal number of women's sports to men's sports or something like that. That's why there're so many schools with women's volleyball, but no counterpart such as men's volleyball. It usually stacks up something like this:
Mens Womens
------ -----------
Football Volleyball
Baseball Softball
Basketball Basketball
Soccer Soccer
Track Track
Tennis Tennis
Golf Golf
Swimming Swimming
Wrestling Crew
... depending on the budget for athletics.
In my area, high school varsity golf, tennis, swimming, and wrestling/crew are proposed for termination next year as a cost-cutting exercise. To be honest, I don't think they'll be missed very much. With the exception of wrestling/crew, the others to be axed are "club" sports. From my experience with women's volleyball, most of the players learn more at the club level than they do in the brief 3-month varsity season.
