I just got an AMD Athlon XP2800+ and was wondering what sort of temperature I should be getting on it?

My old 2200+ used to be around 36 deg C but the 2800+ is around 50-54 deg C. I'm using a variable speed Coolermaster Aero7 heatsink and fan which is supposed to be good enough up to 3200+.

ur gonna burn that puppy up if you dont get it below 50deg C soon... my big amd cpu ran at 45 deg C befor i OCed it then it went above 50deg C I had to water cool to get it running safely

that was with the same fan/sink

Thanks for that. It's now running at 50 deg C. I'll see if I can get it lower. I checked AMDs website and for the Barton XP2800+ it doesn't state a normal temperature but says you should not exceed 85 deg C.

Any other suggestions? Anyone else with AMDs?

i have a barton 2500 running @ 3200 speed

45 47 idle, 50 under AH load( hardest thing i got to work it).

considering my case temp normal is 35, thats a 10 to 12 degree
idle, and only 15 under load, thats dang good. most HSs and watercooling cant do 15 degree diff.

if i can lower my air temp coming in, i could be looking at
5 maybe 10 degree above case temp.

id say 50 is fine, but 55 to 60 id find a way to get it cooler.

Not bad Whels. I am bout 41 on a hot day under AH load but not overclocked. That is bout a 4 to 6 deg rise from case inside desk cpu bay and usually no a/c on - just my ocean breeze.

I agree that 50-55 is not that bad with the AMD's Also, a lot of the AMD mobo's don't give very accurate temp readings. My aftermarket temp probe touching the side of the core is 3 deg cooler than mobo reading in BIOS or PC ALERT 3. Some have reported mobo temps 10 off.

I ended up with one side of my case off, & a 8" house fan blowing air in.

Not pretty but low cost & effective.

Thanks for the replies. I spoke to Skuzzy and he recommended some Arctic Silver CPU/heatsink paste so I'm just waiting on delivery. Decided to get a different case as well so I can fit more fans inside (will have front, side, rear + possibly top fan).

Guys, what util program do you use to view CPU temp while in windows? I am currently running my P4 2.4GHz under Win98SE (soon to be XP when I buy new HDD) and can look at CPU temp in BIOS but don't know where to look when in Windows...

I guess liquid cooling with Ruddles County is no longer an option...

I had cooling problems before with my Athlon 1.2GHz. I had run it for a couple of years at 65°+, but when it started hitting 75° I decided to act. There were two problems - PSU fan failure, and case underventilated for modern CPU - was the case which originally housed a P2-266. New tower case with 4 fans providing through flow ventilation brought it down to about 49°. If you're running at 50°, there won't be a problem. Mine's 2½ years old, and has survived the abuse to which it was subjected.

PS where did you buy your CPU, and how much did you pay for it? (if you don't mind me asking)

Try Ebuyer, they're definitely the cheapest company I've dealt with in the UK. The CPUs, video cards, mobos etc., are very competive whilst all the other PC equipment is much, much cheaper than any other store.

Taken from the AMD forum ... and i have found this true with most amd cpu's ,

"THE CPU
Excessive CPU temperatures are best avoided. The CPU will hang at around 60+ degrees C. So you would want to keep it below 50-55 C. It is important to ensure that you have an efficient CPU cooler- not all CPU coolers do the job very well, so choose one with care. A large cooler with a 80mm fan spinning at medium speed is a better choice than a small cooler with a fast-spinning (and thus noisy) 60mm fan. Ensure when installing the CPU that a thin layer of good quality thermal compound is used between the CPU and heatsink.

All of the above is important but if the environment surrounding the CPU and Chipset is excessively warm then the beneficial effects of efficient CPU and Chipset cooling will be minimized."

Even though the AMD website has most cpu's listed a Peak operating Temps of 75-90 deg Cel...
