You compared his service with spending a year in another nation and not getting the clap (by which account the Navy owes me three of those bronze stars). It certainly seemed that you were belittling his military service.

So, all this questioning of Mr. Davis' service record made me remember a fact that our new Governor went AWOL from the Austrian Army so he could parade around on a stage wearing his grape smugglers...

No disrespect to your brother or his memory. Try to read the post again, this time for comprehension. I was not posting anything bad about a person who served honorably. I was indicating a fact. Signal Corps is NOT combat arms in the Army. Example, Infantry, Cav, Armor, artillery are Combat Arms. Their main job is to deal with the enemy. That is not the main mission of signal corps.

I am surprised that an Army vet would try to blur that distinction. In the right circumstance even clerks get shot at but they are still not Combat Arms.

Uh, going AWOL for a body building competition and then returning to face the music is not desertion in anyone's Army during peace time. I find Mulholland's statement to be that of a bitter and spiteful loser. I mean come on, the guy was only 18. How low will some of these guys go??? :rolleyes:

I really wasn't making anything of it, just wanted to make sure the facts are known....going AWOL in peace time to me is nothing more than a breech of contract and speaks of the offenders caracter and commitment, just as his return to face the music did...but when I was in the Army people went AWOL for much 'better' reasons than, as I said with tongue firmly planted in cheek, parading onstage in grape smugglers.

I googled for the facts, the authors opinion is just that, an opinion. Distasteful and false it may be, but like the anti-american tag some here have put on the current wars protesters, it's only an opinion.

My brother was in Signal Corps in Vietnam for 3 weeks (he was 18 years old). I was 9 years old at the time of his death. The day after my brother was kill by a grenade fragment to the head, my Dad, who was 39 years old, had a massive heart attack.

I’m sorry that I lashed out like I did. It’s not my style. It just really hit me wrong.

 I know they will never make movies about guys like these.  Hell, the American infantryman is my hero also.  But these men where also soldiers.  They served in the finest tradition of the United States Army.
