Define "here". It wouldn't be the US, since we don't have an official language. Perhaps you mean CA, where they voted for an official language, but as of yet their inept state government has done nothing to make that happen. I would support a law that made our official language English, but until there is one in place (and implimented) I think it makes sense to accomodate for a very large portion of a particular society.

Why would it be common sense to speak English when a Spanish-speaking American can currently get all of the services he/she needs in their native tongue, and when that's what they speak in their home and with their neighbors? The system to accomodate them is already in place. If you don't like it, make it a law that English is our official language and take steps to slowly wean them off of these services and possibly provide for some help in learning English.

You're right. It is stupid that this wasn't dealt with a long time ago. I think it makes sense to have one official language and to encourage that among all immigrants. However, that's not what has happened. Instead, services have been provided in their native tongue. That being the case, it would be stupid to provide translation in those other services and then cut them off when it comes to excersizing their right to vote.

about 22% of the rest are foreign born. Still trying to determin the total number of registered voters... but we had a good turnout, really.

I don't care about what service we are talking about. The issue has nothing to do with the right to vote. I just object to idiotic, couter productive and costly efforts to force us to accommodate those who choose not to learn English.

Why would they after all?

Look at the topic, it has everything to do with voting, and that's what I was commenting on. In the current system where we provide these accomidations (you're right, idiotic), cutting off this accomidation at the voters booth would effectively deny them the right to vote.

But whatever, we agree on the topic of the accomodations as a whole...they're a bad idea.

He was refering to the 20 minute paisting that Texas gave Santa Anna while his army was on siesta. It is pronounced San Jacinto (ie.. the G sound not the H sound) We also don't do siesta's here since the fight
