Oh nooooo! yet another handgun!
« on: October 09, 2003, 02:24:29 PM »
Someone stop me!   I couldn't resist... Dan Wesson in 44 mag.   stainless gun with heavy underlug.. came with a 4" and an 8 inch barrel.. the 8" even has a scope mount.  extra set of grips.

Massive  friggin gun with the 8" barrel on it.   This is supposed to be the most accurate 44 repeater available at any price.

I got this one cheap.  Oh well... A guy can never have too many 44 revolvers right?

I was surprized at how accurate that .44 is ... I think its because it feels perfectly balanced.

Shot it last night.   The thing really seems to be accurate.   It is the first handgun that I have shot that doesn't have 2x4 grips (likke those clumsy double stack autos) that I can get a decent trigger finger.   My hands are big with long fingers and I have trouble with triggers... too much finger so I tend to pull left.

I think the gun has about a 1 1/2 lbs single action trigger!   A little light even for me.   There was no manual... is there a way to adjust the trigger?

Ya know dune... the thing doesn't feel that big.  It resembles a 629 smith with a python hammer..  it is well balanced and very quality.   Grip feels great.  It is actually a little larger than my Redhawks but seems smaller... it is narrower with a slightly smaller dia cylinder and top strap.

gunther... I think it's accurate because it is a quality firearm with a 10 groove barrel that is supported at both ends and has a positive cylinder latch up and maybe the short hammer throw helps too.

but... it sure doesn't hurt that it is ballanced and that the weight soaks up 44 recoil.

is there a way to adjust the trigger?

pull your grips off, it should be fairly obvious if the spring is easily adjustable.  i'm not sure about the DW's but most adjustables either have a set-scew that pushes on a leave-spring to adjust the pull (or something simular, if you're reasonably machanicly inclined you'll know it when you see it).  if it's not readily adjustable you can probably order replacement springs of different tensions.

actually all are adjstable, just not to make the pull stiffer.  I've lightened the pull on amny non-adjustables by using a grinder to 'buterfly' the leave spring.

why would you want to stiffen it up though?  I  mean I know it's your gun and it should feel right to you and all. but safety isn't really an issue when fired on single action, (you don't **** it until you're reay to fire anyway) and if you stiffen it up acuracy will suffer. ( I have the same problem you mentioned about finding a gun that fits larger hands,  and a lighter pull helps a bit with that pull to the right)

the cylinder walls and just about every other 'pressure part' is lighter than the ruger,  ruger makes their guns considerably heavier,  when loading your own rds for revolvers you usually get 2 sets of load tables.  one for rugers and thompson contenders, and another set for everything else.  rugers will take much more pressure, you can actually load .45 lc in a ruger to very near the pressures that you use for a regular .44 mag.  making it about the same power (a little slower, but also a bit bigger)

boy.. thats the truth iron... Now I can just let the house go to **** and buy hot rods and guns.

apathy... yeah, know how to adjust smiths and Rugers but this is a little different.   It uses a coil spring in a short column.   I was hoping there was a strain adjustment.   On a smith you can just back off the strain screw.

measured the single action pull... slightly less than 1 1/2 lbs.   too light I think.

the coil spring has a rod running throught the middle, right?
if so you can increase the pull by shimming the spring with small washers.

I've found ways to adjust just about every gun i've tried.  if the above idea doesn't work I'm fairly sure I could figure a way to do it if you send a pic or diagram of the action.

Thanks but I can figure it out... I was just hoping it had an adjustment since there is an allen wrench on the tool for the barrel nut that I can't see the use for.
