Maybe I am wrong, but it has been my understanding that if you bail, you get an entry in your score as a "bail" and if you fail to bail out properly (or run afoul a bullet) you get an entry in your score as a "death"
A "bail" you retain some percentage of your perks (I think it was 1/2 I don't remeber)
A "death" you lose all perks for that ride
I have even go so far as to let some guys ditch if they were an especially fun opponent, but mostly I prefer to hand out "deaths" - especially in some circumstances outlined above.
If you are gonna hang around in a chute around me you better deserve it. I expect no more or less in return.
Good example: I once chased a pony that had porked fuel at a base. 2 sectors he went out to sea on the deck with me pursuing in a p47 - once he thought he was far enough out to avoid proxy kill he decided to bail. I shot his chute and he immediately whined about it "who was the chute shooter" on channel 1. I said nothing and rtb'd with the feeling that chase was probably more worthwhile than others that day.
