"Upgrade" HA!
« Reply #108 on: October 25, 2003, 01:35:54 PM »
Well, I bought more memory and a new video card in an attempt at a cheap upgrade.  But my AH2 framerates actually got worse.  Here's the story:

Old system:  P4-1.7GHz, WinME, DirectX 9.0, 256MB, GeForce3 64MB
New system:  P4-1.7GHz, WinME, DirectX 9.0, 512MB, Radeon 9600 Pro 128MGB

In both systems, frame rate didn't change in the vidmem test so used unlimited in both.  Horizon always checked, disable palettized textures always unchecked.  1024x768x32

Test 1:  Bumps, Transitions, DOS <--
Old System:  FR 43, VM 63.3, VMU 54.8
New System:  FR 34, VM 129.9, VMU 53.1

Test 2:  no bumps, Transitions, DOS <--
Old System:  FR 42, VM 63.3, VMU 44.4
New System:  FR 32, VM 129.9, VMU 49.6

Test 3:  no bumps, no transistions, DOS <--
Old System:  FR 53, VM 63.3, VMU 41.2
New System:  FR 44, VM 129.9, VMU 46.5

Test 4:  no bumps, no transitions, DOS -->
Old System:  FR 80, VM 63.3, VMU 38.7
New System:  FR 73, VM 129.9, VMU 41.6

So, at the bottom line, doubling RAM and putting in the new vidcard resulted in a loss of about 10 FPS across the board.....    I'm currently using the driver that came on the Radeon's CD, which is dated April 03.  I see there's a new one from Oct 03 on the web site, so I'll get it and see if that helps.  BTW, in AH1, things improved with the new system....

In addition, I now have a new problem with the clipboard   In the tower, the icons on the map constantly flicker with pink/purple/yellow colors.  It's even worse when the clipboard 1st comes up on the splash screen.  Then, the pink/purple/yellow flickering applies to the entire board itself and all the text and links on it.  CHECKING the "disable palettized texture" box SOMETIMES stops this from happening and allows the clipboard to display correctly, but not always.  NOTE:  in the icon colors area, the color patches display correctly without the wrong colors flickering over them.

Here's a pic of the pink/purple/yellow flickering:

New Driver
« Reply #111 on: October 25, 2003, 02:58:34 PM »
OK, got the newest drivers from the ATI site.  This did the following:

#1.  Eliminated "gay clipboard" problem :)

#2.  NO EFFECT at all on frame rates.  All FR, VM, and VMU numbers exactly the same as in my last post.

Funny how a 3-yr old Nvidia card with only 64MB onboard has better FPS than a new ATI card....   to keep from crying.

Yea but if AH2 was a DX9 game then it would be a different story.

Updated video driver and adjusted nvidia setings to achieve the following

AMD XP2400+ (266) (but at 133 x 12.5 = 1.666Mhz)
GF FX5600 256DDR (quincunx AA + 0 x anistropic + medium intellisample + enabled fog emulation @ high image)
512RAM (133)
SB5.1
Old Proview770 (needs gamma (set to 3 on nvidia)to be used can barely see screen at AH Gamma 1 (requires 2.5 minimum))

However at settings requested for test

test #/FR/Vidmem/Vidused

1/48/260/44.0
2/48/260/44.0
3/60/260/42.0
4/84/260/41.0

Installed the latest with a fresh uninstall of 1.99.

No text would show - it would appear as green blocks.
All settings were as specified, 1024/768 32bit and unlimited. As result - could not obtain frame rate test like in previous version. Conditions are flyable.

Configuration is as follows:

AMD XP 2400+
ASUS 87N8X2.0
PHOENIX AWARD 6.0o PG
1024 MB DDR
Radeon 9600 128 mb
Driver 6.14.0010.6387 English
DX 9.0b
