can you network Win 98 and WinXP comps?

the network cards on both work, however it says the cable is disconnected, on the XP one, and the Win98 one fails the cable test as well. Should I get a new cable or the two OSs are incompatible for networking?
What's the procedure to set up a network anyway?

Sounds like you have the wrong kind of cable if you;re going straight from comp to comp you need a crossover cable (yellow). Once you get the right cable just run network setup wizzard on xp machine, you dont need to do anything to 98 machine (except mabey undo what you've already done)
