Title: It's a new dawn!
Post by: Skuzzy on September 25, 2014, 04:13:26 PM
The following screenshots represent a first pass terrain conversion of CraterMA to the new graphics engine. It is a milestone as it was accomplished with the new terrain editor, which is part of our massive update to the game and its support utilities. This is completely untouched and a raw conversion. Welcome to dawn on CraterMA!

What's very exciting to see is not the finished result, and a perfect fog layer, but the affect of the haze structure itself.  This new engine is amazing in how complex it is, while still performing well.  HTC is currently in the middle of fine tuning the foundation and support structure, I try and ignore the paint job for the time being ;)

Threads like these show a number of things.  Mainly, the immaturity of some people and the short sightedness of others. These threads also show who people thinks they need to display their e-member because they lack much to hold on to in real life.

Some of you really need to find better ways of expressing your opinion.  By the way... I invite everyone who needs the eye candy to complete their experience to develop a superior product.  Seriously. Go on.  Get started.  Otherwise, in the short term at least give HTC a chance to upgrade their sim/game as they see fit and enjoy what is offered, or don't pay to play.  It is that simple.

While true, it cant be used as an excuse. The competition can and WILL develop more and quicker because they choose to have huge development teams. And so HTC will be a bit behind the 8-ball when it comes to trying to keep up.

OTH, I think what they are doing looks great and is a big jump forward to what they had. I don't play any other games so all I compare it to is what we had to what we soon will have. Comparing it to other games it may fall short, but it's this game I like, and this game I play.

Telling the community members to "go make a better game" is about the most asinine thing you can say. Everyone here pays 15$ a month for this game. Me, I have been here 6+ years. That's 1080$ Of my money I have given to HTC. "Give HTC a chance to upgrade their sim/game" well it's been a helluva long time before we have seen any major terrain changes. With this day in age, I would hope they have alot more to do with these graphics.

He did say it was the first pass. Also it seems to be an automated system HTC will use to move current maps to the new system, and as such might need a quick debug/tweak pass by one of the HTC crew to clear up issues.

This comparison is intended for those, in a sneak preview thread of what HTC is working on, who ignored the part about it being a first pass, (early work in progress) automated conversion of an existing map, and had to be more than just critical.

For those who lack imagination or haven't heard of Sweetfx or other shader programs, I wanted to give an example of a simple change in color balance when viewing Aces High. (Note:  this was just a simple color balance change using a graphics editing program, shader programs make it look way better!)

Screenshots and even the poorly converted youtube films of the updates don't compare to the actual environment (period).  You will just have to wait and see.  For those who have way to be critical about work in progress, you are only giving developers more reason to slam the door shut and keep you in the dark even longer

'It's just a first pass, you can't judge is silly. When someone throws a ball you can fairly accurately predict where it's going to fall a few seconds after it leaves the hand. Most of the pictures and videos posted so far fail to impress me. Sure throw a 'ho ahhh' sunset to make it look better, but it's still has the same feel as the current engine. I'd have hoped HTC to bite the bullet and start something from scratch.
It's an upgrade indeed that requires a lot of work Im sure, and I'll keep enjoying AH, but 'the new' feels like 'putting a newer stereo system and chrome rims on an old tired car'. :old:

It seems that user survey has shown that players have really poor systems so they can't upgrade a huge leap without getting a lot of disappointed customers. That and resources - AAA game titles have hollywood movie budgets nowadays. The artwork is very labour intensive.

You might have started with a blank piece of paper, but your painting looks like a more polished remake of your previous one. I am happy HT, I am just not impressed. I also do realize HTC is doing everything in house and cannot hire a whole $$$ team of latest savvy graphic/coder.

Well at least you are paying your bill after you shoot the chef, punch out the waiter, and set fire to the curtains as you leave the restaurant. And it is the epitome of class that you are still willing to dine at that miserable establishment regardless of how soggy their Confit de Canard comes to your table. Everyone realizes that the pictures that were posted are a first pass of a fully-automated terrain conversion, right? It probably isn't adding any extra details or resolution to the old terrain...just making it so it works with the new engine and objects. Let's not be so overly-critical until the final product is released.

And people wonder why HTC has been so stingy with pre-release development updates.

Jimmy I understand, I'm still glad I shared my opinion for whoever cares.

Bustr  :lol ... let's see I joined since Beta in 2000, I think we used to pay $29/month in the days. I did take a break 5-6 years for RL lack of time. I spent $1600-ish   so far with Aces High maybe? For countless hours of entertainment, I think it's worth it. AH was/is/willmaybe definitely (be) a chapter of my life that I will always remember.

No where in this post does it state in any way what you do not like. Or rather "does not impress".

All it does is attempt to flame HTC.

Now I would like you to show me any other shots from other games that show 3d mountains 20 miles in the distance with haze layering in the atmosphere.

Im not too much of a fan of DCS graphics, everything is so 'grey'. I like Flaming Cliffs a lot as far as graphics:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcHFQ9dSb1I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcHFQ9dSb1I)

I like their lighting effect, I like the terrain features look realistic for Europe especially the trees. They are clamped together and border fields, roads and rivers and are not scatered randomly into the countryside. You posted a screenshot of a town that looked promizing but subsequent pics/vids showed the tree 'randomly scattered' again.
I definitely love the detail of the cockpits that lack in Aces High but I understand it's the price we have to pay for being able to download the game online. I love tbe little things like the scratches on the glass that show online as they get lit up, the way the thickness of the glass shows like on the spit side window, the cockpit glass getting ice covered when flying in the clouds, the contrails at high altitude, the water has actual dissipating white crest giving that wave feeling.

Anyway, you asked I answered. The new water you created looked miles ahead of what we have now, I was expecting the new terrain to have the same leapfrog WOW factor but I haven't seen it yet. The terrain reflects in the building windows, great I guess but I still dont't feel like Im flying over a credible terrain of any part of the world. Im not 'flaming' to be a trouble maker, I'm contributing to comenting on the progress shots. My opinion is my own perception and doesn't mean it's accurate.

Ok and what does any of these things you described above have to do with the screen shots posted in this thread.

In fact your complaining about cockpit detail, and we have not posted any shots of the changes we have made to cockpits.

No where in this post does it state in any way what you do not like. Or rather "does not impress".

All it does is attempt to flame HTC.

Now I would like you to show me any other shots from other games that show 3d mountains 20 miles in the distance with haze layering in the atmosphere.

HiTech

Only your competitors will truly understand what you are accomplishing. Or the more hardcore geeks amongst your subscriber base. Very few players as a rule would ever have a clue how to see what you are describing and tell the difference from the other popular offerings on the internet.

To the uneducated and uncaring eye, it all looks the same in terms of 3D and distance. So they are unwilling to give you credit when most non-programmers really think you are supposed to make it work, not insult them with your hurdles and delays to their fantasies.

Most want IL2 or WT graphics combined with your genius physics and 600 players per room. Many of the complaints in the last few years try to hide that in the midst of them trying to hide their anger at you, along with petty shots at yourself and other forum members for disagreeing with them. You are the programing guy, so it's your problem making them happy because they are paying you $14.95 a month. Or once did and are still holding their breath waiting on you to capitulate to their demands.

Still he hasn't kicked the janitor's dog yet. Now if we were in the Philippines or Viet Nam.

We all can be over critical at times.  Often we look past the effort involved in producing a product and the risk the author takes in displaying his work to the world.

They are proud of what they have done or they would not have offered a preview.

Looks good to me. :aok

Depending on the time of year and what's burning in California. There is an ocean layer that runs in under the golden gate bridge all the way against the Berkeley hills. If you walk up over the Claremont Hotel on the ridge, sometimes your head is just above the cloud layer and can see all the way to the two tower tops of the golden gate and out to sea. As the sun sets, you get the same golden color, or red, or purple, even blue saturating the clouds. Even a thin marine layer lights up that way. And the top of the Berkeley ridge is about 2000ft.

If you do the same thing at sunrise, you can project a shadow of yourself all the way between the two tower tops from across the SF Bay on top of the clouds. Hitech's yellow effect is more like a brush fire I was in near San Diego back in the early 90's around dusk and dawn.

This has devolved into open season on Hitech for not fulfilling someone's fantasies without letting Hitech know he is on the hot seat for a non commitment he didn't make. I've been here no stop for the last decade, Hitech has never promised anyone anything other than access to his game for $14.95 a month.

Anything else is using him for a punching bag.

Bustr you are quite an instigator with those over violent references. I know that in America everybody is supposed to get a trophy.

HTC presented something; I said 'MEH'. HT got offended and said 'show me this and how come?'. I showed that and said because, he said 'I am COAD'. I thought it would be an opportunity to discuss what he was doing/could do or him to understand what I liked but instead it started to turned sour.

You have it all twisted with what I expect, and me paying is an non issue. I enjoy the game for what it is. The fun I have mingling with other humans, friends or foe and the context provided by HT overcomes the dated graphics, primitive damage model and few FM anomalies. You are right that for me, the perfect game would be IL2 Cliffs of Dover graphics overlayed over every else Aces High, because in IL2 COD I have the feeling of being into an actual cockpit flying above an actual piece of real estate ... but I miss everything else Aces High.

HTC is working hard in improving the game for his personal reasons that I'm not pretending to know. He is posting progress pictures and we comment on them. Since we all have different standards, HTC receives various levels of reactions from Ohh Ahhh to booo. I fail to see the wrong. We all take criticisum in life from doing stuff, and those make you work harder and get better. Hell the Dodge Monaco I painted, I repainted it 3 times re-sanded down to the metal 7 times ... 2 whole summers. Yet, I still have guys saying : 'duuuude ... did you paint that with a roller?'. My answer is always 'show me what I could have done better with what I had', my inners want to say 'go to hell'.

And since Hitech eluded cockpits, here's my standard for cockpits from IL2 COD. I want to reach thru the screen and twist those knobs.

But to go back to those 2 haze pictures, forget it's Aces High, if you get an email that say : 'Check out that new game in the making', I bet you'd say 'I'm not impressed'. I sound like a jerk I'm sure, but I'm a straight shooter. You got to call a cat a cat.

Thats a cool cockpit!  I run an old machine so I don't even get to see whats AH looks like in its current form with settings high except in others videos.  Eye candy isn't a big deal to me but I get that it is to others.

This got me Googling game graphics and it truly is amazing whats being done out there.  Screenies from Project Cars look like photos of the real thing.  I only play AH so I'm not really up on where gaming is or where its headed.

AH is a blast and I'm glad its moving forward. I'll wait until the new stuff is released to see what I think.  Won't matter a whole bunch to me since the gameplay is what I like about AH.  If I have to upgrade, I probably wouldn't go top end stuff anyway so I still might be running low settings.  I hope it helps recruit and retain players.

I don't know what it is about Project Cars, I think it's the lighting. Pcars, Asseto Corsa, Forza 5, GT6, Iracing all great lifelike graphics, but somehow PCars has that extra wow factor that makes it more realistic looking. I can't figure out why.

The color balance in AH is strange to me, also in the new screenshots. Perhaps they're too saturated as well. The colors in CLOD looks much more natural to me.
