Title: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE in the next patch
Post by: Imoutfishing on March 18, 2008, 02:01:52 AM
With all do respect intended I ask for 100% more control over the filth that comes via game coms.

If I have to subject myself to to petty vulger on range channel fotter thats fine.  When other's such as my children or anyone's family members are that another subject.

I subscribe that perminate squelching & range be used.
Tonight my daughter listened to a "younger" member of the AH community tell someone to "suck his dick".  If that gets banned here why not give us the ability to control it in the game?

If you want to comment,   no I will not play with head phone's I could never get used to that... No I will not play when my Kid's are asleep this game has no rating & I like to play it anytime I like...  so don't bother.

I never whine without leaving something without at least a suggestion on how to handle said whine.  It's hardly ever the best way but something to think about.

There are four way's this issue can't take place (1) RANGE, (2) pm's, (3) channel 200, (4) by mistake by a trusted comm player.
(4) Talk to your squad CO and handle it that way.  It's worked so far that way :)
(3) is simple... I never watch or reply to 200 messages.  It's not worth watching.  HTC has a .s command to cover a good fight either way.
(1, 2 & 3)  Give each player more control over what comes across the end user's computer via both channels.

In short please update the radio's & the filter system.  Many of us would really like that.

MGD

With all due respect, I was aware of that phrase, and knew what it meant when I was 7 or 8 years old.. I'm now 32, and that knowledge as a youngster didnt turn me into a psychopath.. I dont think  :noid

However, there is definately something to be said for just being polite..  I dont really disagree with you, it's just that I dont think words hurt people...

Yes sir I agree with you l  did know also what it ment at that age.  I'm not sure I cared so much then as I do now :)  But none the less if I want to try to protect MINE from as much exposure as long as I can that would be my right.

It's a shame I force my kids away from me when I play AH due to the range channel banter when I can but they still get some exposure from time to time & there is nothing we can do about it.

Now I'm slightly older then you but I don't disagree with you one bit unless we are talking about how to raise my kids.

I hope you see my point.

I agree with MGD, maybe kids that young already do know those words, that still no reason why they should have to hear them on a game like this that is supposed to be family friendly.

I would also be in favor of a perma-squelch.

With all due respect sometimes my four year old cousin likes to sit by me and watch me "pway aiwpwane". Some times I let him sit on my lap and fly around and shoot at red people. I dont want to subject him to some of these kids (men who act like kids) with foul language on range VOX. I dont know if you ever known a four year old but they repeat EVERY word they hear. Iv made the mistake of cussing in front of him and you can only know what happened next. He started running around the house yelling that word at the top of his lungs. Needless to say his mother was really mad. Thing is young kids may "know" the words but most dont know what they mean. When I was nine I knew what sex was but that doesnt mean it was ok for me to watch porn. Same thing goes for this stuff.

It's not a whine when you are trying to protect your kids MGD.  :)

To many people think they can say whatever they want on vox because of freedom of speech, or because they are sitting in their own homes talking. What they fail to remember is that when they use the comms in game, they aren't just using it in their living rooms, they are using it in everyone else's living rooms that can see/hear it.

I agree 100% as far as the VOX
But you have to realize that this is the internet
I have an 11 year old myself
NO WAY would i ever let her get on this game and hear some of the things ive heard
Ive heard things on this game that have made me sick to my stomach
you know if it bothers me then its really bad

I don't like some things i hear on vox, there's some people who should get their a** whacked for the things they are saying to people, and i would like to see somekind of method to ignore/squelch fast individuals permanently.
It's not viable to turn of area vox completely off because of some people... so we should have some easy and fast way for it.

Example, please dont take that name as for real i just typed it in random:

Player55467337798734: %%&¤"# you #¤¤#%&" head, i will #¤%#¤&#¤& mother etc.

And then me typing ".squelch player5546...ohh wrong again .squelch player5467"

So is this convenient enough ? no... and i would not want to hear that, nor should anyone's children.

To many people think they can say whatever they want on vox because of freedom of speech,

The problem with freedom is that it comes with responsibility... Things would be a lot better if the punks of this world could understand that

for the love of god please give us PERMA-Squelch!!!

Has to be right up there with the B29!!!

How hard can it be?  we already have the squelch command it just needs to save the list somewhere for the next time we login!!

Please I beg of you.

I really have not come across but a few pilots that cuss alot, but while I agree with a perma-squelch I as a parent of a 3 year old and a 1 year old know that there is a chance of some one cussin' to be heard so I use the ole' trusty head set when I fly.  Before you take this as a dig on you or your request, let me restate that I infact DO agree with you on the lack of tact over the radio and it's potential harm to the youngins'.  This is why I also AGREE with you on the need for some type of permanent squelching.  That being said, I also feel that while I do not cuss much there are those that do.  If the consession must be made of me wearing a headset so my youngin' does not hear the occasional ranting tyraid then so be it.  Sadly not everyone can conduct themselves in a manner befitting a decent mouthed respectful person.
SO...

 :salute

and I hope your request gets through!

Exactly! Try to explain that to those who think they have the *right* to spew filth into my living room where my wife and kids can hear it. It doesn't go over well, believe me.

This game is aimed at a general audience. (per HTC) You absolutely should be able to let your 11 year old near this game.

should be options to de-tune country chat and range vox.  I Think you can just kill the sound so that no-one can hear it.

I think Not also asked for permission to PM, maybe a check box somewhere to allow private communications.

It is pretty sad to want such features but we are dealing with the "intardnets" here.  These options would allow you to block out everything!  The peace and quiet when your flying will be well worth it   :D.   For the guys who want to let younguns watch this would be the best solution.

Now I don't want AH to become a police state where every word and transmission gets monitored that isn't in the spirit of having a fun community.  It is good to talk to your friends and enemies when playing but it does get spoiled by a very small minority and the large minority of squeakers.

Oh yeah, the incessant earsplitting whine of the pre-pubecent hollerin' out everything that happens to them in a fight is almost more than grown folks can take during squeaker season!

Don't forget you can report abuse of vox using the .vreport command:

Quote
Command: .vreport GameID

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parameters: GameID; the pilot handle of the player.
Available: Online
This command registers a complaint about a persons voice/VOX abuse. Abuse of the command itself is not tolerated.

They do babble dont they? Once flying NOE over very tricky terrain I had to listen to one kid give a 5 min description of how his cat was climbing all over him and licking him. Finally we hit a flat patch of terrain and I was able to squelch him. I dont mind kids, Im a father myself, and most of the kids in the game are pretty nice kids. Just not on NOE missions....OK? :pray

While I agree with almost every point you make, it is you who said 'no' to headphones.  I use them for all my games because the missus doesn't want to hear my loud sound fx and the tv is a distraction in a fight.  In the end it is your choice and your responsibility to protect your little'uns ears, not HTC's though I'm sure they will try.  What's a little discomfort compared to kiddling's well being?

I'd even go so far as to say every channel, both vox and text should be able to be squelched.

Headphones shouldn't be necessary. When my older daughter used to sit next to me and watch, headphones weren't really an option then because she wanted the full effects of the game as well. For some, a little self control is to much to ask.

I do understand your point, and i agree,But the simple fix would be headphones. you are being a little stubborn there. i think it would be almost impossible to eliminate foul language. I don't believe  ahII is the right place for foul language but I have let a word slip there before.  And i have apologized to the people that heard it. And you are not going to stop some snot nosed brat from doing it on range channel Even if you could pema squelch a player, that will not stop the next one from saying something offensive. or go to clipboard options/preferances/voice and turn voice playback down and not have to listen to anybody.

I have to agree on this too.  While I don't curse myself, I understand some do and I let the occassional d*mn or h*ll roll off my back.  My children, which like to play on the other computer in my office, and my wife usually don't even notice those (if I have my speakers on).  However, most times I have to keep my speakers of and put my headphones on.  I regulary hear over range streams like: GD, MFing, SOB just HO'ed me (if you don't know what the abbreviations stand for, good.  The people on range did not abbreviate).  Or things like: that c*cks**kin a**hole.

And this is on a regular basis.

Hey, I know it is the real world and I know people do talk like that.  But if they are not going to have consideration for those around that don't want to hear it (or for those that have ones around them that don't want/need to hear it), then please let us have a way to squelch it out.  That way, they can continue to talk that way all they want and HTC tolerates and those who don't want to hear it don't have to.

I was a Firefighter for 16 years prior to moving to ATL. In those 16 years I heard every obscene word imaginable ( I think we even invented a few ) and it did not bother me.  Somehow when I fly AH it just feels uncomfortable to hear the tirades that some players spew out.  I am also in favor of some form of perma-squelching.

I say yes to Perma Squelch.  HTC should also create a way of seeing who is squelched the most so they can keep an eye on them.

I like the idea of HT keeping a naughty list but I would assume there would need to be some way to differentiate between those who are verbally abusive and those who simply are annoying.

I'm inclined to agree.  While the foul language does not really bother me, (i used to be in law enforcement, so I have heard it all, plus some) I have an 8 year old daughter who likes to watch, and or take the controls occasionally, as I fly.  99% of the time, I use headphones, however, when she comes to watch, she insists on the speakers, so that she can hear the game as well.  ability to squelch the individual channels entirely, as well as perma squelch of individual players, would be WONDERFUL.  That way, if you want to talk out of the toilet, be my guest, my daughter does not have to hear it.

agreed, once you squelch a person, they remain squelched on your list. Another thought to throw out....add another voice vox along side of the voice channel that gives you the option to tune or de-tune range and/or tune a mission ect so you don't have to switch off your squad channel. I think we already have the ability to squelch all, country, and room by .squelch 1, 2, or 3 (please correct me if I am wrong for all I ever used was the squelch 1). If you don't want to see any player text in the buffer I think its possible, maybe? However I still vote for perma squelch voice and text..........

Another thought......HTC appoints a number of game moderators (the AH Ethics Police maybe). Players that meet a certain requirement to regulate the funk in an assigned areana. Each country should have a certain number of moderators and have to log a certain amount of hours each week or month....you get the point...

There is absolutly no reason for anyone at any time to use such language in game. The fact of the matter is that there is no real punishment for it and so long as there isn't it will continue. Risk vs reward, i can't see what the reward for acting like an idiot is, but if they were banned from the game for a week and put on probation for a month maybe this would clean up their act a bit.

So long as we tolerate poor behavier in game, that is exactly what a small percentage of the community will give us, I say there should be a zero tolerence policy, why should anyone be put in a position to de-tune an entire channel to avoid one or two idiots. We don't need new rules, such language is forbidden already, those who violate the rules should be made to pay a consiquence for their actions.

If one is to type something offensive on text you get a warning, or lose your radio, and I know that trying to do the same for vox would be near impossable. So one potential solution would be a volume control for each vox channel, if what is being said on range is unwanted, one could effectively mute it by turning the volume all the way down.

One issue that I see with tuning out your range radio: Your fellow countrymen (the ones that you want to hear) can no longer effectivly communicate with you. So a check six will not be heard over range, or a signifigant target will not get noticed etc.

My .02,

I wouldn't want to see range vox squelched because it is valuable to communicate with the others around you to coordinate attacks or call out cons.  It wold be nice though to be able to pull up the radio bar right click on the person's name you would like to squelch quickly and select it.  I think that would be a viable solution.  Just my couple of pennies.

at 32, i'm really surprised that you think that. give it a few more years... words are VERY damaging to some. they can drive someone to the point of violence, against themselves or others. they're a very tough weapon to defend against, and i can see his point. if i had a 7 year old daughter, i'd feel the same.....i DO have a neice that age, and when she's around me and my family, we do the best we can to keep her from crap like that.

i think HTC should make some kind of check list... were u can go and put a check in the square of the person that u wanna squelch, so u can always take it off later..... mabee in the roster list or somtin, next 2 there name

THAT sir, is an excellent idea!!! :aok

Nothing is wrong with Hell and damn when used properly and in context, which most people are ignorant of. They are now used primarily as expletives that I don't wish to hear my 8 year old using , which he did once at 5 after I used one... I felt the appropriate amount of shock, shame and guilt/humor and talked to him about the power of words. Words are very powerful and those who disagree have not been exposed to the right ones I suppose. I have to agree that while headphones are a temporary answer, they are not THE answer. What THE answer is exactly I don't know yet.

It is not only the language used but the constant belligerence of certain players that goes on each time they are in a given arena. I have a few players I don't care for based on their conduct and their 'mouths' so to speak. Constant badgering of other players or "talking smack" if you will, has made playing any competitive event, whether this game, BBS, or sport, into increasingly unpleasant experiences. Players who feel they need to gain an edge by talking smack should really just practice more and increase their skill level or accept some will be better at things than they are. I remember as a kid the idea of sportsmanship was heavily emphasized, I don't see this much anymore around the practice fields.

I am no saint by any means as anyone who knows me is aware of. I have even had moments of an F word slipping out over the Military Police net in real life. I try hard not to though. I am all for a viable solution, until then I am making every effort to refrain from the ignorant use of my vocabulary. Appologies to anyone who was within hearing of anything I let slip out.

Perma Squelch would be bad but a filter update would be lovely.

I will be corrected if I am wrong, but the technology to filter Voice does not exist, it is an all or nothing choice.

I agree too. It's gotten way out of hand. Our CO has kicked out several pilots for vulgarity after some stearn warnings. He needs to kick out at least one more. Ironically it seems to be the kids that are doing it.

BTW Hitech, our COs should get paid for baby sitting since the parents aren't doing it.

I agree to squelching also. When you squelch someone it should tell the person they are squelched as well. That way that person also finds themselves talking alone. This could force a bit of control on ones own language. Want to curse?*squelched*-you have been squelched- Do it on your own now. Just my thoughts on it.

I know we saw the new version today and there were no changes in comm's but by the response to this post maybe we will get a change soon.

I didn't know the new version was coming so soon or I would not have started up with this subject at the time.  My comment was spurred on by one particular exchange that I had nothing to do with and could not control after it started.

If my post had been made a month or so ago maybe it would have been handled.  So I ask that in the next version the vox system be updated with some socialable standards if the customer wants to filter some content if not that is the choise we all must make.

As you see by my post count I am pretty new to AH but a fairly veteran MMO player.
As such I was really quite suprised when somone I had squelched previosly was back again next time I logged on.

We all have different language and annoyance tolerance so this is very hard to legislate, if not impossible, language doesnt phase me personally but inane babble does,  permasquelch should be an option.

A agree with this post completely.

I'd even go so far as to say every channel, both vox and text should be able to be squelched.

I dont feel like looking for the thread now but Hitech already said that rage squelch just aint gonna happen.
Individual squelch would be the best option but I doubt thats gonna happen either.

The best bet right now like it or not is headphones,(nobody is more responsable for protecting their kid then the parents themselves)
And reporting abusers who become excessive in their language.

Question is. exactly what is excessive?
Do you really want to report people every time something slips out?
You would get 90% of the arena banned as I have heard almost everyone slip up at least once at one time or another. (note I said "almost everyone")

HT in his own words said the object of the game is to "piss the other guy off"
And lets face it. It works. and whenever you get tempers involved and people pissed off. Your going to have the occasional cuss.

While I dont condone foul language in game. It doesnt bother me Anymore then when I or my kids have heard ot on TV
unless the person keeps ranting on and on.

I think alot of people feel the same way.

In game I noticed it seems to come in waves. I can go for weeks without hearing more then the occasional slip up.
then there will be a string of one or two nights where everyone seems to think they are in a biker bar.
Maybe the moon phase or something I dont know LOL

But the best and most effective policeman I've seen so far . Have been the players themselves. Not in reporting. But in simply telling the offender/s to knock it off.
But that seems to be more effective in the way its said
Usually from what Ive seen is "hey, please watch the language. my kid is around" more often then not gets an apology and a ceasation of cussing.

Where as in throwing out an insult like "Hey you jerk watch your language"  often only gets more cussing  and arguing.

Sometimes its not in what you say but how you say it.
Remember your probably dealing with someone thats already pissed off. Meeting anger with anger usually only ends up with everyone angry and nothing accomplished.

All that being said. Most people will slip up from time to time. And I dont really think they are the problem.
the problem is when it becomes excessive.

Then when reasoning fails there are several options.Move to a different area on the map. or report the abuser.

Honestly.
Headphones are the best thing for "protecting" the family though.
So long as there is a vox. Your never going to not ever hear it.

I thought the same thing about headphones. That they would never work for me and that I wouldnt like them.
I started using them cause I got tired  of hearing my wife and visiting mother complain about feeling like they were in a war zone with al the machine gun fire and explosions.

Now I wouldnt want to play the game any other way

I'd love to see a permasquelch.  Its always the same few for me. Id like to think that I could .s them one time and never hear from them again. I mean..Im squelching them because I dont want to hear them. For me its not the vulgar language, as I have no kids and talk like a drunken sailor when Im not in game. Its the same guys that PM ya talking crap, and the kids who should be better monitored at home. I have no use for them now, and certainly won't in the future.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the senseless profanities and whatnot, but......
If you want to comment,   no I will not play with head phone's I could never get used to that... No I will not play when my Kid's are asleep this game has no rating & I like to play it anytime I like...  so don't bother.

You're not a pilot.  I love a 2.4 ounce pair of headphones compared to a 3.7 pound helmet w/ built in comm.  And they even make them all comfy and stuff.  I know one guy who uses his headset from his GulfStream(more like headphones from the 70's).  And NO, I'm not a pilot either.....  But I like to pretend...... So I wear the full helmet.

As for you're suggestions.....

4 - YES.... My CO does not tolerate anything of the like and does not hesitate to kick somebody.
3 - 200 is 200.  A place to enjoy your enemy and get them to bicker.
2 - I do think curse words in PM's can get you auto squelched.
1 - Voice recognition code is nowhere near having the ability to do as you ask unfortunately.  And even if it were, the 15 we spring a month would more then double just to start trying to incorp it to the game.

With all that said.... I still agree with you completely.  We have too much freedom sometimes.  But freedom should never be confused with poor taste and not having a moral/ethical code to live by.

i try not to do it so much over range  but ive gotten to the point to where cursing is almost automatic lol i mean not the f word all the time but the other ones. all i can do is wear my headphones.

i wish we could mute on range so when drunk guys get on and start squeeling i wouldnt have my ears bleeding

Well I'm 15 and I'm pretty immature, and I agree with you. I can find ways to seriously insult someone without useing that kind of profanity.  :salute Good idea

OPTIONS:

1.)  Turn volume off
2.)  Get headphones  :huh (duh)
3.)  Leave
4.)  Pray that this brilliant request actually gets answered

But seriously, people should be respectful when there are women and children present. Anyone can cuss. You don't need an education to do it. It usually shows your lack of education, discipline, and courtesy to others.
This has been a longterm dilema in AH and will continue. What you do in your home and with your friends is your business. Keep it there. AH brings you into others' homes and common sense and proper manners are the norm, for almost anyone, who is a visitor or guest.

The Checkbox would be a good solution, but nothing beats the reporting feature for those who abuse the community. Turn enough of those folks in and the message will be felt and heard, loud and Clear!!

I don't think you can turn volume off for vox, you'd have to shut off your speakers and that kinda kills the immersion.

Get headphones? What about the people that are actively playing that don't want to hear it? Oh, thats right, they need to ruin their game immersion by shutting down their sound.

Leave? Leave because OTHER people don't know how to show a little restraint?

When someone uses the comm's, text or vox, they immediately enter everyone's home that can see/hear their comms. If everyone would conduct themselves like they would if they were guests in someone else's home, this wouldn't be an issue.

Wow..

I will say that after the numerous (I REALLY MEAN NUMEROUS) online games I have played, AH really seems to be mostly populated with adult like humans.

The learning curve of AH seems to weed out a pretty significant number of the rif raff.

But, I've only been playing AH for about 10 days, so I may be kinda sheltered still...

Uhhh...  I'm pretty sre you have 98% control over any communications u send/receive.

Ch2 can be de-tuned...

any vox can be muted by turning off your vox capabilities or even simply turning off your speakers.

the ony thing i think that remains out of control is range channel... (??) did they ever add a way to squelch/de-tune range?

you're right in that you can't really control what others type/say, but you do have control over what you see/hear...  you can do what *you* think is appropriate.. or you can sit back and whine for a nanny-state.  which do you prefer?

I tend to play in a room away from the family, but when my son comes in the room, I shouldn't have to turn off the speakers.

Unless this is the type of atmosphere HTC wants to promote for his game.  That's his call.

The bad part is that people have to 'actively' cuss on the vox.  You have to push a button then say your trash.  I cuss when i fly but I don't do it into the mike.  People who get crude on the vox remind me of kids that take up smoking so they can look older..

I agree there is a cussing problem here, squelch does the trick most times. About a year back I was very excited about this game and told my boss about it. I down loaded it on my work 'puter to show him and maybe we could suggest it to our 500+ students we have contact with throughout the year. (I work at the Kalamazoo air history museum, the Air Zoo) Sure enough about 2 mins into the game "F" bombs were dropped . Apart from being embarassed in front of the boss, Aces High lost what I think would have been a good marketing buddy.

Hey SHANE!!!   Okay, back to the subject.  I am guilty of hitting the talk key when I shouldn't (probably about 75% of the time).  I have heard some pretty offensive things and outrageous comments over range and mission vox.  I do use a headset, so, it doesn't filter into my household (we are all adults, but would still be offended by what I hear sometimes).

Is it possible in voice options to turn vox playback all the way down?   I will try this next time I am on and report the results.

If you are abusing the vox, you know who you are.  (Just like I know when I have)  After one such embarrassing outburst, "SH**!!!!!!"  I hit the mute button and typed the next day, to remind myself that vox is one of the privileges of this game.

The communication in this game is what draws me to it.  I want something like this to work with disabled kids to give them additional instruction in the classroom or other areas where exchange of ideas might be inhibited by disability.

I guess, "**IT!!!!! Happens....."  Forrest Gump  It is better to be safe and mute it if possible.  To those who think turning speakers off entirely is the answer, a large part of this game is audio.
