Daxx Dalton ,11, and his father, Dann Dalton, talk about the Aurora fifth-grader being suspended from school for wearing a homemade T-shirt that said "Obama a terrorist's best friend."
Daxx and his father, Dann, say his First Amendment rights were violated. Citing student privacy, Aurora Public Schools (Colorado) spokeswoman Paula Hans said she could not discuss specifics of the Dalton case, including confirming whether the boy had been suspended.
EDIT: I found a news clip for this.

Ya our schools can't get kids to read.. lets drag them into the mess that is politics.
-
A center of education should be shielded of religious and political endoctrination. The teachers definitly are not allowed to spill their propaganda to young spongy minds. There's no freedom of speech in school, this tee shirt is as provocative as one that would say "I hate gays", or "Hitler for president".
-
Watch the news' clip carefully. BTW, you will get at least one good laugh.
-
Gotta go with the school on this one. The kid obviously wore it to class to be disruptive.
-
School +1.
-
 :O What a distraction! I remember how excited all the guys were to talk politics and religion at school. Man, I would have been too distracted to study with this guy in the room.
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!
:rofl The only things distracting in school are:
A: Tight shirts :aok
B: Tight pants/ skirts :aok
C: The goodies that fill A and B :aok
D: Whale tails, tramp stamps, and belly rings :aok
Don't forget, these kids now have to be wondering if their teacher is one of those Tilfs that might let them go all the way. :pray :devil
-
The shirt was at least factual - William Ayers gave Osamabama his Chicago "Coming Out" party.
-
Keep truth out of schools at all costs.
-
that sob obama wanted to give a terrorist a fair trial.
-
The teachers definitly are not allowed to spill their propaganda to young spongy minds.
SURELY you do not believe this to be fact.
-
I bet if it had said "BUSH causes Terrorism" there wouldnt have been a problem.
-
SURELY you do not believe this to be fact.
I had to laugh when I read that too. With one particular teacher, I have to "de-program" my kids when he comes home with liberal-like questions. :rofl
Anyway, the kid is an idiot, the father even more of an idiot for allowing that type of behavior. You want freedom of speech? Put it on after class, otherwise you're just asking for negative attention.
-
SURELY you do not believe this to be fact.
Got a chuckle out of that myself.
I started thinking about the bridges, desert ships and beach front property in Az I have for sale.
If this one`s for real, I could pocket some serious scratch.
-
I agree with the school on this one. Regardless of which political figure is mentioned on the shirt.
He wasn't suspended for wearing the shirt. He was suspended for refusing to take it off or cover it.
-

:rofl
From the minds at Minolta.
-
SURELY you do not believe this to be fact.
Yeah, seriously. A teacher would fail you for stating your disbelief in a god. A friend of mine actually got her suspended over that.
If you all are going to start whining about liberal schooling you should all be pissed off about the conservative indoctrination that goes on as well. No reason to be hypocrites.
-

Perhaps you should tell your friend to find something other than a Catholic school to attend...
-
so bongboy.. are you really prepared to state here that the public school system is more conservative than liberal and does not spread liberal ideals as much as it does conservative ones?
That being the case.. or even the reverse being the case....
Why would anyone not be for vouchers? if you feel that your childs mind is being poisoned.. why would you not want vochers so that you had some control?
Why would you not want some control in any case?
I didn't really mean "you" as I know you are a child yourself and a product of all the conservative brainwashing at our public schools.

Was public school. <S>
so bongboy.. are you really prepared to state here that the public school system is more conservative than liberal and does not spread liberal ideals as much as it does conservative ones?
I'd contend that it all depends on where you live. Being in the Bible Belt I've almost always seen much more conservative teachers. Upon reaching college I'd say it evened out. If the teacher even discussed politics, beyond encouring people to vote, it was just as likely they would espout liberal rhetoric as conservative. I can't even recall any teachers like that outside the Political Sciene department anyways.
That being the case.. or even the reverse being the case....

Vouchers. Everyone gets X dollars a year to spend at whichever private school they'd like? I guess part of the deal is they still have to pass all the end of year exams just like homeschoolers?
Not much of a problem with me personally. I'd rather the money stay in the public system but honestly I'd say this should be decided state to state, not nationally. If your state is down with it, well thats your state, not mine.
I didn't really mean "you" as I know you are a child yourself and a product of all the conservative brainwashing at our public schools.
And surprise, surprise! We almost had an intelligent exchange of ideas and you again move to calling me a "child" and "brainwashed" at that.
You sir are the only one acting childish.
-
I agree with you that vouchers should be state by state. Those states that refused to have them would fail due to the lower performance of their future citizens.
Yes.. I believe that if public money is being spent then standards would need to be met. I do not know of any private school tho that is having as much trouble meeting standards as the public ones.
I did not mean the kid thing as an insult.. To me you are a kid.. I have kids older than you.. I don't know that much about the school system in the bible belt but.. at any level higher than 12th grade.. I would bet that there is not a public funded education system (and even a lot of the private) that is not far left in it's leanings and teachings.

Ohh... another frivolous law suit about to happen. :(

Can't really argue with your perspective on higher learning. You have your experiences and I have mine.

I grew up in one of the most liberal towns in America, and the only teacher who ever spouted off about politics was a conservative. Maybe if I had grown up in a conservative town it would've been the other way around.
-
That father should be ashamed of himself. Most eleven year old kids don't have enough information to make an informed political decision. He's just regurgitating what his father has told him.
If the father wants to make a political statement then he should wear the shirt to work, nothing wrong with that. Using your child to make a statement and distract him from just being a normal kid is pathetic.
-
The shirt was at least factual - William Ayers gave Osamabama his Chicago "Coming Out" party.
It's funny (to me) that a guy with Robert E. Lee as his avatar talks about any sort of anti-Americanism.

Your first sentence is spot on.
The remainder I hope was just said to jest. Most Teachers over the last 20 years have become so political that it's disgusting.
I think the kid got hosed, and in the end, he's gonna get a big check.

i thought the art work was poor, don't they teach graphic arts in school?

Nope. Supreme Court is with the schools on this one. Similar to the Bong rips for Jesus poster some kid made somewhere.
If the principle is of the opinion that the child will be disrupting class he's going to win any case pressed against him.
And I agree with ChickenHawk

That does not make it right. The Supreme Court's seemed to think it could legislate from the bench for far too long.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Nothing in the 1st Amendment says anything about your right to free speech being offensive (also called disruptive) to others.
The kid's 1st Amendment Right was broken.
-
All the school needs to do is prove the shirt caused a disruption, or that it might "genuinely threaten disruption". The supreme court precedent is pretty cut and dry on this matter.

If someone was to put a gun to her head and pull the hammer back, I bet the first thing out of her mouth would be "Oh my God".....

Thought you don't get amendment rights 'till you're 18 anyway?
-

Legislating from the bench is not correct.
The 1st Amendment provides no clause in it that allows for the "disruptive; aka offensive" excuse.

If it fits the liberal agenda to suspend him....then he'll get outed.
Freedom of speech is only good when it says what you like and agree with.

If anything reminds me of how much the world has changed in my lifetime its a visit to a grammar school.
We once had a 7th grader who knifed his teacher. We have gang fights in grammar schools. Even the Catholic schools now days have kids with mouths on em like you wouldn't believe.
In my day we wore uniforms with ties, had to have haircuts, prayed every day, and considered our daily oath of allegiance to our country an honor. If you opened your yap or showed bad manners, you'd might get a warning but most likely would catch a crack upside your head. If you really stepped out of line, like made a face at a teacher or cussed, they'd smack you so hard your feet wouldn't touch the ground until two days later. In the meantime you'd be begging them not to tell your old man and you'd be praying like heck for God to forgive you for being such a little schmuck.
Boy the world has sure changed. Right down the toilet.
-
The difference between this kids shirt (besides the crappy kindergarten graphics) and the banner Bong hits for Jesus (or whatever it was) is this t-shirt is making a political statement which the first amendment is designed to protect and the banner was simply glorifying drug use. This kid (and his dad) might actually have a basis for suing on the grounds that his constitutional rights were violated.
-
idk, I'm buying one that says 'Keep Working, Millions on Welfare depend on YOU!' I think that's about as far as Political shirts get until november. Then, I might wear a McCain/Palin 08 shirt.

The other kid had a basis as well. Regardless if it was promoting bong hits for a deity, it was his right to express his belief.

The kid seems way more informed than a lot on these boards.
Imagine that............a father teaching a kid what he believes in.
There should be a law...............and probably will be if the commie leaning, big eared yapster is elected.
Maybe a while spent in one of YoMomaBama`s reeducation camps would do the trick.

So if a kid wore a t-shirt saying 'Allah is GREAT, Jesus sucks' it would be OK?

Schools should have uniforms and separate schools as to male schools and female schools.
Hours should be from 7am to 7pm from Monday and throughout Saturday.
Discipline needs to be tightened up and more respect given to teachers.
This is education of our young. Not a walk in a Mall.
For those of you that think this is outlandish...Hey it's worked in Asia for many Years.
I wonder why we are called "Lazy Americans".

How much does it cost to keep a kid in the latest fashion trend compared to a uniform?
Mac, the other night on TV there was a guy, from NYC iirc, saying the same.

Yeppers... school is a "Fashion" program...not an "Education" program.
Ohhh and when I was a kid I took my lunch to school...in a paper bag.

Schooling doesn't have to be 12 hrs like AWMAC described. 6-8 hrs should be devoted for classroom instruction, but the following activities should be required/standard...
+2 hrs required club activities
+2 hrs required to join private Cram Schools (tutoring services) to practice for SAT/ACT

Every man has a God given right to teach his children his own personal values. On that point, I think we agree. I don't even disagree with message.
But this case smacks of exploitation of the young to send the world a personal message. This is no different than the two "Prussian Blue" girls being exploited by their parents to send pro Nazi messages.
The message is irrelevant. It's the way it's being sent that's shameful.

Mac, the other night on TV there was a guy, from NYC iirc, saying the same.
The main expense would be the 12-hour day that Mac proposed. You'd have teachers' going into overtime pay, for sure. Uniforms, which most likely would be cheaper, wouldn't nearly offset the cost of the O/T. And over that long of a day, the school board would probably mandate some kind of mandatory 2nd meal program.
Here in California, there are School districts' laying off personnel with the existing program. They can't even scare up enough money as it is.
-
No want wants to pay teachers what they're worth as it is, let alone a 12-hour work day.

-
Teachers get paid IMO just fine....better?
Yes.
Teachers who get a performance based pay-raise are always in favor of that sort of program no matter how opposed to it they were before...big surprise, eh? To be fair, some teachers are paid too much; some don't deserve the job. A little bit more $ for teachers and less money for administrative staff would go a long way toward pushing out the mediocrity.
Some years ago I had a job where I would go to a school district central office to handle paperwork for after-school scholastic programs. The schools themselves were, eh...let's not go there. The district office was a 4-story glass monolith of endless offices and people with bloated job titles like "facilities-use technician." Pathetic.
-
Good Points indeed.....Admin Staff I would agree are usually overpaid....
Teahcers who can get performance raises deserve what they can make...no problems there either....
Teachers who don't perform shouldn't be teaching....
If you don't perform...you may be looking for a job right? I know most are like that anyway.
Which leads me back to teachers make fine money.....
If school was a year round deal...with say Xmas and Thanksgiving vacations...throw in a spring break...that would amount to like 3 - 4 weeks vacation a year....Keep the kids in school 8 hours a day. Take time to TEACH instead of running em in and out like a cattle call. Just my opinion...means nadda.
-

worth? worth??? Them??
hahahahah..
yer kiddin, right?
Give us vouchers, we'll hire our own teachers, thanks.
-
Schools here have uniforms. They have however been neutered in their ability to produce effective members of the community by this ridiculous notion that nobody can be considered above or below average or feeling might get hurt.
My Sisters are teacher (one is also a security guard, something which no doubt comes in handy :lol )
For the most part teachers do what they can but they've been hamstrung by the notion of political correctness and litigation. To really be effective they need the ability to set a curriculum and the support to help those that need it. They need the School boards to back them up if Johnny is failing and not be pressured to "pass them through or it will make us look bad". The schools need to enforce a code of discipline without fear of legal challenges from parents of kids who do not wish to obey the rules.
To sum it up I will take a quote from a prominent individual in the Australian community. "Harden the f.... up!"

Also, I've known some really great teachers in my life. Where does everyone get off generalizing the issue and declaring them all horrible?
