FYI for those who don't know, Black Shark by DCS is out.
Check out manual for this monster....a true study sim.

Jesus, 385 pages. :O
-
Oh Jeez - I'm totally getting divorced now....
-
A flight sim is SUPPOSED to have a manual as long as a novel. I miss the good ol' days of games like 1942: The Pacific Air War when you got not only the big hulkin' flight manual, but the big hulkin' guide to aircraft and combat tactics.
-
Oh Jeez - I'm totally getting divorced now....
You? Well good thing my wife wont leave me but she is going to ask a lot of work out of me for a 'third' sim pit. AHII FSX and now this... will there be no end?... Lets hope not.
-
holy cow, that looks amazing
-

You need three different pits? Use one pit, and tell her it's all the same game just different levels.
-
Looks pretty damn cool - like the Falcon 4.0 of helicopter sims.
-
That's one I'm not getting. Besides being all about a helo (and I'm not too much into helos) It's simply too good for me. Don't get me wrong, I've seen that sim in motion and know how good it is. I've seen an english translation of the manual aswell. 60% of it it's dedicated to the different functions, buttons, etc the cockpit and frontal displays have. With so many features, buttons, functions, etc, it demands a HOTAS I don't own (and can't afford), and a time dedication I simply cannot devote right now.
Some five years ago a simulator like that, with a 350+ page manual would've meant heaven for me...but not now. Had it been about a plane I may have been interested.... but to re-learn flying a completely different creature (and learning all the fancy tech stuff in the meantime) will be a hard job taking too much time.
When any of it's expansions with a plane on it (I think they're doing an A-10 expansion) is out, I may join the club. But for now I'll stay well away from it. Took me long enough to learn how to properly fly a virtual plane...no need to do the same with an helicopter ;)

I love that clip. Epic fail of universal proportions :D

Well I had just started on one for the P51 since I fly it all the time in AHII and FSX it would be great except it will be setup for the P51. Now when I fly the F-16 in F4AF or FSX I want a different pit of course and I will start that project after the P51 pit is finished and now theres a heli program out!

just check out the damage modelling too :o

56 page Quick start :lol
Maybe it's in the in-game encyclopedia, but I find sad and odd that not a single page is dedicated to the history of the machine. Maybe because they should include possible uneasy truths at this level of detail? I don't know. If it's because it is not what the target buyer is interested in, it's a shame, and maybe a bad marketing decission, IMHO.

Don't worry the DVD will be out in Feb/March and hopefully it will not have the silly activation/deactivation crap that it appears to have with this digital version. As I posted on another board...I should be allowed as the rightful purchaser of said game to install and uninstall the game as much as I want to on my machine. I mean I did that with Falcon 4 over the last ten years. I think I have installed it probably 100 times with all the screwups that game had in its first version.
-
Kind of hard to get anywhere with it for the first times I'm trying it. Flying it feels like an F-117 without computer assistance - up down up down left right left right up down....
-
Don't buy this unless you're willing to put a lot of time in to it. It took me three days just to turn the bloody engines on.
I can fly it now, after a fashion. Hovering without letting the autopilot do it for you is pretty damn challenging. Most of my landing are similar to that youtube clip of the Apache :rofl. I haven't even begun to touch any of the weapons, navigation, radio countermeasures systems yet.
I also had to go out and buy and extra large ring binder for the manuals.
Oh - and I'm absolutely loving it. :D

Huh?
-
This game is pretty damn sweet once you learn how to stop tearing the rotors off.
The only major flaw is the campaign system. This is garbage. It's just scripted missions. It needs a live campaign system like the various Falcon 4 engines. Then it would be a masterpiece of helicopter sims.

It isn't as bad as in space camp where we had a 15 minute preflight checklist, followed by a 6 minute pre liftoff checklist, followed by a 10 minute post liftoff checklist, followed by 2 simultaneous checklists involving the EVA and docking with the ISS, followed by a random emergency checklist, followed by a 10 minute deorbit burn checklist, followed by a prelanding checklist, followed by the 10 minute flight downwards as our autopilot failed, with at checklist going on at the same time, followed by the wheel touch down checklist of shutting everything off without blowing up. We had a 63-ish minute flight, with various time warps to cover for periods of time which would be spent doing nothing. And would you believe that our group set a speed record for the camp?

orbiter is a right laugh. I set out to go to the moon after breaking out of a low earth orbit with unlimited fuel checked. Everything was going fine untill slightly underestimated the stopping distance traveling at 91,250 m/s. :o

I might decelerate in just about enough time to see the earth turn into a single white dot.

gotta watch how much Delta V u give yrself. Did you try to use the orbital transfer program on the mfd? It'll setup waypoints, tell u how much deltav u need for a transfer, etc.

i messed with the tracking systems a bit, they seem quite complicated yet a simple interface, will take me some trial and error. Re-entry is easy but landing in the correct continent not so on manual control.

No idea. Probably since I couldn't find 64bit.exe. Performance seems 64 bit worthy.
There is a little snaffu with installation. You're required to installed BS1 1.0 first and than BS2 upgrade. I suggest, uninstalling BS 1.02. Installing 1.0 (do not even turn it on). Than BS2 update. It will only ask for BS2 code.

15 minutes just to TAKE OFF? Who in their right mind would want to play this?
http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/video/
This is my current ride since the BS2 update. I started again in February 2012 in full sim mode. This is total immersion, except I do, do a couple A-10C sorties every week not to forget the cold start startup and Maverick targeting. I did not do the Warthog for 6 months and came back to Aces High. When I went back to DCS, I forgot almost everything I learned concerning the A-10C; but it came back relatively quickly reviewing my notes.
The Black Shark I tried last year but gave up on it as the 2nd patch update had all Russian lettering in the cockpit and a Russian speaking "Betty" . In February 2012, I added the $20 BS2 update over the other patches I had previously installed last year. I never did do the Betas. Black Shark 2 works fine. Startup cold, no cheats, I am down to about 5 minutes now compared to the several hours indoctrination learning that beast. I think the helicopter is much harder to learn than the Warthog jet. But the Warthog's internal computer operated targeting and navigation systems are much more complex. If guys want, they can purchase BS2 as a 1st download for about $40 and it does not require the initial downloads 32-bit sequences, the 2 patches in 32-bit and the new patch in 64-bit is how I have done it. The English version has an English speaking "Betty" with Russian accent and the cockpit labels are in English. The A.I. friendlies guys still speak Russian.
Youtube has tons of instructional videos and how-to. The BS2 I can start it up, take-off, fly it, navigate rudimentary to waypoints, and I am just getting into learning the combat systems. I can land it on the runway, but hover landings to a FARP landing pad needs work. This sim is much harder than Microprose's Gunship back in the mid-1980s. One real helicopter pilot came into the DCS forums, flew the sim, and commented that the Black Shark helicopter sim is as realistic as a real one.
The WWII P-51 will be out sometime this year and it will not be arcade-like as to Aces High. It will be like the real thing. I am looking forward to it. Some guys are already prepping their sim-pit mods builds in anticipation.
I was wondering how many folks from Aces High also go to the DCS servers? It looks to be a small handfull do.
Nobody is telling what the other newbie will be. I am hoping it will be the F-18 Super Hornet.
Something was said here about Orbiter, the astrophysics exercise to practice the math, some physics teacher dreamed up. For me, that is by far the hardest sim to learn out there. There was a new update in 2010 or 2011.
Like I said, just one of these dadburn aircraft simulation is total immersion just like a real pilot would learn just learning one aircraft. How the younger guys can keep all the various moves to the various aircraft, memorized is beyond me.
-
The same way they memorize every pron URL in the internet.
:devil
-
Buckaroo I have restarted my Black Shark learning sequences as well. I invested in a little notebook to keep beside me for both the start up sequences in BS1 and A-10C which both took me about 4 hours each to get the cold start procedures down to less than 5 minutes from kicking off the mission. I agree that its tough but I suggest you do like I am doing and start making a note book for each thing. As I get more comfortable in the training modes I start using the notebook less and less for the systems and targeting.
Still though it would be cool to hear from guys like Russian and Eagl who are active USAF pilots how similar the startup sequences are in aircraft compared to the simulations.

Hi Reschke,
Actually you are the guy that got me interested in the Black Shark last year in a message you posted to the Aces High forum.
It took me a long time to get familiar with Aces High. I know it pretty well, now. But currently, though a paying member, still. I am not playing it until September when I quit DSL and get a cable ISP which will run 7 times faster!
I play in full sim mode, not game mode. I found some CH Products profiles to modify to CH Hangar for both aircraft.
The A-10C Warthog was a very steep learning curve to where I am now and I just know the basics, still a lot to learn. That was total immersion for 6 months last year. I have the latest newbie, too. Maybe 5 minutes to get airborne, but you need 10 minutes to get the weapon systems up and ready on the ingress in to the combat area. I think the A-10C's combat ability is more difficult than the helicopter, but the helicopter is harder for me to fly it.
I actually found a 2009 copy of the Black Shark flight manual in a metal spiral bound 500 page book from Amazon.com published by Eagle Dynamics and DCS. The online manual is great for searching for a topic item, but I prefer a book opened up in front of me.
I am a fanatic searching, asking questions, and finding useful info and then printing it out and also bookmarking and adding to stuff to My Documents. I make folders and use my filing cabinet.
This beginners start-up sequence by SDeath comes in handy for BS2, but I got most of it memorized now. Some of it has to be done in proper order or things malfunction and in flight have to be reset and started over. I don't do the test checks as one would do in a real aircraft.
http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=35571
Also, this beginner intro into combat basics by Para_Bellum is helpful, I found this within the last week, just reading their forums. I printed it out, see page 19, chase down the download source:
http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2626185/19.html
http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2626185
And the User Files video instruction are very helpful. These 22 lessons used to be interactive before Black Shark 2:
http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/video/bs2-training/
This guy redid some of them, his way, just for BS2. Download the .miz files and drop them into the folder sequence Black Shark 2/Missions. They will then come up in the BS2 Index under Missions.
http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=84612
Realize most all the good files were posted in 2008 and 2009. LOL! Some of it is being done for the BS2 newbie, lately, by the members, not the staff.
My biggest gripe is in Multiplayer, there is not much available with low ping rates, but maybe I need to join a squad.
Here are their User Files, members created, most are free. Just set the filter selections as to what you are seeking. Most are .miz files and add them to to your Missions folder as I stated above.
http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/
It is just too much to also learn LockOn Flamming Cliffs 2 and #3 is in the works. This version is not as intense the learning curve and more servers are available in Multiplayer.
I actually downloaded Dragon's Mission Pack to be played only in Multiplayer.
http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=43361&highlight=Dragons+Missionpack
Multiplayer kind of sucks. I finally get into the combat area or I am RTB to rearm and refuel or get repaired and POOF! somebody closed their server or reloaded a new mission.
So I play on my own PC server by myself and create a solo LAN party. I can play all day. I set a password so nobody pesters me. My ping rate is 16! LOL! I have another PC, I checked it out to see if I really was on their server. I was. I do not know if I could host very many people on my computer. I have always wanted to get a dedicated server, but I need to own a small country to afford it.
I found all this stuff on my own. Plenty here for the beginner that wants to take the plunge into the madness.
It is all good, it is fun.
Welcome to the asylum.
-
Sounds like a blast Buckaroo I just downloaded BS2 about a week ago after sorta procrastinating on it for a while. Thanks for the heads up on these links I am sure that I have seen them or some of them before but not having played BS in a while I am really rusty.

You have some good A-10C flicks.
The A-10C, maybe the older one, also, if gear cannot come down and need to belly-flop the airstrip, enough of the wheels are exposed anyway to do a fairly successful landing. I usually hit the end of the runway just a hair above stall speed, full flaps and airbrake out. Not all airfields are the same length. And I have gotten lost and landed at night at an enemy airfield. Heck of a thing enemy does not turn the airfield lights on. At least can take off again without an Aces High greeting if doing same here. LOL! Those night vision goggles are nice unless somebody drops a 10,000 candlepower illumination flare. A single engine landing is a bit different technique.
You guys know about the ground crew fixing the plane, once landed, right? If on concrete, get fixed up, then taxi on over to the tarmac to rearm, refuel, etc. If in grass, you can get fixed up, but I have never gotten out of the grass to the tarmac. Ditto with the helicopter, but it is a little friendlier in the grass.
How do you guys do refuleing with the tanker, in flight? My CO really got pissed me killing the tanker.
I finally got the helicopter landed to a FARP landing pad in one piece, but it was not textbook pretty. I need more practice hovering.
I usually play about 4 AM New York time with my Australian and New Zealand buddies, their evening time. But I have not seen them on lately.
The Phoenix server is somewhere near Boston, I think, but it is currently down for some reason. Some guy owns it. It has 99 player slots.
Fun sim.

Basically it makes Aces High look like the arcade game that it is. DCS is a true sim.

You pay for the aircraft program. I downloaded the modules online into a Windows 7 "My Documents" folder. All later update patches are usually free as are the mostly free user made downloadable missions and other stuff. Digital Combat Simulator has two aircraft currently: Ka-50 Black Shark (Russian helicopter) and the USA National Guard's A-10C Warthog twin engine jet. I think the DCS engine is now all 64-bit.
Their forum tends to be less mean spirited than Aces High's and very helpful people there:

They do not have a central server like we are spoiled with using Aces High, nor a similar radio chatline; you need Team Speak or similar. Either play offline or online using some people's PC servers or some people actually setup servers. A lot of the servers play full sim, real, no shortcuts, no startup cheats, just like a real aircraft. So, the need to know how to do a cold start ramp startup on the tarmac. The unlocked servers tend to have some ill mannered individuals that like to team kill and such negative activities as to Aces High, like vulching, not taking off of the runway, etc. Try that action to some of the locked servers will get you banned, and by word of mouth, the one server offending action will most likely get oneself banned from all the others, too. Most of the guys play strict discipline like adults should act.
Their other sim engine is more like Aces High, less technical, more players online, the Lock On series update Flaming Cliffs 2 and more aircraft to play with. I found the 2 disk set Lock On and Flaming Cliffs 2 at Best Buy a year ago for $20 US. All the aircraft come with it.
I just hope the USA stays friendly with Russia, I have a few friends there, now. The Russians I know here in the USA speak English usually well. If they type on the forums in their native Russian language, the online translators do a good enough job of figuring out what they are talking about.

Wait until DCS-P51D is released...heck, moderators are so scared they deleted my thread about it.

Yep that 51 ride is going to be top notch if it is half as good as the black shark and warthog sims.
