hey dude,
i figured, that rather than continue a hijack in the christmas thread, i'd do a new one.
here's a few pics of my hoyts.
the camo bow is the one i've had for about 1 1/2 years. it has the XT 2000 limbs, a drop away rest, and a sure-lok 5 pin sight.
the target bow is the one i just got a few weeks ago. it has XT3000 limbs, a lizards tongue drop away rest, and a sure-lok 5 pin sight. this bow is getting a sure-lok target sight..the one pictured. it has a 4X scope built in right now, but as i shoot without a scope right now, and my scores compare to the guys with scopes(i average in the 420's and 430's with a best possible 450) i feel i may not like the scope. i just want to try it.
the camo bow is significantly lighter, and very nice in the outside 3d shoots. i've shot in langhorne, harleysville, princetown, redwing, and falls township. i liked harleysville the best, although we shot that one in a light rain. that just seemed to add to the challenge, and fun.

gotta love Hoyt, you can use the limbs to go skiing and use the riser to frame a house. :rock

I thought this thread was a typo and was suppose to be Hoty, not Hoyt.
For those of you that made the same mistake as me...

Here at work I don't have pics of my New bow, here are some from a 3D shoot last summer.
This is me with my old bow. Hoyt Vulcan. I used a Sureloc 1 Pin sight on it, loved it. This thing was shooting at 318 fps. We had an Elk target out 158 yards and I hit it 2 out of 3 times.
Here is my girlfriend shooting. This bow is a Hoyt Avenger in Inferno color. She uses a Sureloc Supreme sight and has since added a Posten Stabilizer system. She ended up winning this shoot in the womens division.
This was my son's bow, Hoyt Vectrix. He has gone to a target bow since.
I will post pics of mine and my son's new bows tonight. I am shooting in a Techno Hunt league right now and the winner gets a new Hoyt Bow. If I win I will get the new AM32 in Black Matte. Those bows are so sweet. Are any of you guys active on the Archerytalk.com forums? If so, what are your usernames?

Kat, love it, 72# at 29" and getting 322fps with light speeds.
I have a HHA site for it and a longer cartel stab, but I usually just hunt with it as its show in the pic.

Very nice, They are great bows. My current bow is a Vectrix XL with the Z3 cams, so essentially it is a Kat XL. Only pulling 60# on this one though, its more of a target bow. Want to get back to a 70# Alpha this year hopefully. You guys need to get a Hoyt logo in your av's and represent! :rock I will put up a pic of my current bow today, it is known as Halle Berry in these parts cause she is black, and she is beautiful :aok

YAKNOW......
i've never clocked either one of mine. i'm only pulling 59# on the camo bow, and 55# on the target bow.
the longest target i've ever shot was 78 yards away, on the falls township course...i think it was an elk. i hit it twice, and lost the third arrow. i'm only sighted for 55 yards on my 5th pin though. i had to give a lot of leeway to hit that.
i shoot camo hunters(2315), and stalkers(2216). i like the stalkers better, as they seemsomewhat more accurate.
i had been using quickspins, but i started grouping way too tight, and ruining arrows. they also seemed to take away a bit of range.

Cap,
What kind of strings you using on your bows? I have used Winners Choice quite a bit and they seem to be very good strings. I'm not a speed freak, but it is nice to have if it is available, but I definitely wouldn't sacrifice accuracy just to have a faster bow. I am currently shooting Gold Top Ultralights.

stock string on the camo bow, and winners choice on the target bow.
i should note, i got the ultra tec set up as it is in the pics. it seemed like a decent deal, at its price....and i shoot left handed. they;re hard to find unless i wanted to fork over for a brand new one...which i can't afford right now.
i noticed the release your girlfriend's using too. i tried them, but couldn't find a comfortable place to anchor my hand. i still use a wrist release.
what i wish i had vid of was when i got my PSE,.,,,,,like a true anal orifice, i tried to finger shoot it. that didn't work out so well. :rofl

I did not notice that you were a lefty. If you ever feel like getting rid of one of those bows let me know, my GF's dad has been tinkering with the idea of getting a bow and he is a lefty, can't go wrong with an Ultra Tec. I recently switched to a hand held release, and yes they take some getting used to. I am actually shooting her release in the picture of me, although you can't see it. Funny story about that is we were shooting that day in the competition round of a 3D shoot, we had just hiked about 600 yards up the mountain because we began the course on about the middle target (shotgun start). When it was my turn to shoot I couldnt find my release (which was a wrist strap style) so I got to use hers. That was my first experience using one, I had to re-sight my bow in as we went along due to the different anchor spot. Needless to say I didn't win anything.

butcha had fun though, right?
THAT'S what i like about it.
sometimes golfers get on me saying this is the same as golf. so i sometimes call this golf with high speed pointed sticks. :rofl :D
i like the 3d course in harlesyville pa, as it's fairly mountianous....adds more of a challenge.

Archery and Golf are similar in some aspects, of course you can combine the 2! Here is me at an Archery Golf shoot, ever done the archery golf?
I would love to be able to afford to travel to some shoots back east, I may have to go shoot tonight after all this talk!

nono.. was serious. i've only done the 3d shoots where they set up the targets at varying distances, and preferably making them hard.
i generqally never kept score when i go....i just look to see how deep into the kill zone i am...and enjoy the hike throught the woods........

Aaaah, maybe Archery golf is specific to Utah? They set up a course and use a piece of firehose approx 7" as the "cup". Most holes are a par2 anywhere from 20 to 60 yards, no backstops so if you miss your arrow can end up 100 yards away. They did have one hole setup that was almost 500 yards, that was fun just to launch an arrow as far as you could towards the target. The bad thing was they set the course up in some Rocky terrain, I think I ruined almost a dozen Gold Tip Ultralight Pro's that weekend (about $120.00 worth of arrows). I havent been back since because I cant stand breaking that many arrows on rocks. It would be ideal if there was a nice grassy field somewhere without so many damn rocks.

that's easy......just buy cheap arrows for those shoots.
i'm gonna talk to my buddy.......see if he's heard of the golf thing around here...if so, i think we'll hafta try it this year.
out to about 40 yards, i rarely ever miss. past that, my accuracy drops siginificantly.....more like 50/50, so i could imagine launching some arrows. :D
ooo...BTW........
Merry Christmas!

The problem is I am type A about being sighted in, I use a one pin sight and use Archers Advantage software to make my sight tapes. Using different arrows would require adjusting my whole setup, printing out new sight tapes etc. Plus the idea of buying arrows, no matter how cheap just to break them is something I just cant force myself to do. I guess Aluminum arrows might be the answer there though, a bit more durable and a heck of a lot cheaper. Cap, did you answer my question about being active on the archerytalk.com boards? Are you familiar with archerytalk.com at all?

i'm not active over there. my friend glenn, told me about it a few weeks ago though. he had just bought a dozen fatboys from someone there....i think he said he got them for less than $50.00 too.
i'll probably check it out sometime tomorrow though.

technically $40.00. he asked us to both donate 20. :rofl
i think i'm jealous of those bows. i
i just finished mounting my traxis sight. it was a righty sight....but i adapted it to my bow anyway. it's too dark outside though to try to adjust it. maybe this weekend, i'll go to AIM, where i shoot......and get it adjusted in.

I am hoping the archery shop here is open tomorrow, been itching to go shoot with all this archery speak. Let me know how the sight works out, I'm sure you require some imagination being a left handed shooter adapting accessories.

Awesome!! I use to target practice with a conventional fiberglass bow aiming at several bales of straw by my garage. Soon I stopped though to fix all the holes in the garage.

Enemies product?.....nah...just shoot what feels good to ya and shoot often. They are all good.

What is pictured is my Prestige with my spot set-up. I'm hoping at some point Spot-Hogg will re-issue the Hoggernaut. I'll replace my Toxonics with that. For 3D I switch out to the Hogg-It and shoot Mens Release for IBO and Unlimited for ASA.

yes. I only use those for spots though. I took my time building that batch. I was maybe a bit anal about it all. Over the dozen of that batch, all shaftes were broken down, floated, indexed, components weighed, and my lightest arrow came out to be 389.7 and the heaviest is 390.4. I figure there are some folks have more patience to close the gap tighter, but I settled with what I got.
The Lightspeeds for me 3D setup weigh out at like 294. I didnt really spec those out.

I have always wondered, having never gone through that whole process whether or not there is an actual tangible improvement or if it is just a mental gain in confidence? What do you think? Obviously the closer in weight your arrows are the better, but floating them, do you think that works? And, what exactly does it do? Doesn't it have something to do with finding which part of the arrow spine is stiffest?
-

Odbal, it was really all an experiment to see just what would happen and if I could have the patience to do it to the degree I did. What I was looking to do was establish some consistancy in my shafts. So yes it did give me a gain in confidence knowing that I didnt have to ask myself "how would my arrows possibly fly different if I had floated and indexed them?".
Floating finds the heaviest part of the arrow or the seam. Some argue that carbons dont have a seam, but I have found they do have a heavy side. So when I find my heavy side I mark the top with a marker and know that the heavy side is on the bottom. I'll then fletch my cock feather directly above the seam. All my shafts have the seam on the 6 o'clock postition. It doesnt matter where its at as long as all your arrows in your batch are indexed to the same location. Again i'm just looking at developing a consistancy between shafts. Now is there enough to notice a difference.....I think there is. I had a previous set of 3-49 ACC's that I didnt index the seam on and they each flew a lil more unpredictable. I number my shafts and over time I get a feel for what each shaft is going to do. I found my indexed shafts did hit a more consistant spot over the batch than did the ones that werent indexed. I will also admit I entertain the fact that manufactoring tolerances, fatigue, and concentration also played a part in my observations over time. Some days are just better than others on the line/ stake.
The closer the weight the better. In terms of just numbers alone, its cool to know that less than one grain difference over twleve shafts is pretty sweet, but I could be possibly be off as much as 6 grains and still have same point of impact at 20 yards. At 45yards the 400's have a ever so slight drop that can be compensated for. My setup puts me on the bubble of a 400 or 500 Easton shaft. I had gotten low on arrows and had a shoot comming up that I needed more arrows of a type than what I had of each 400 and 500. I shoot Lightspeed 500's at 27 1/2" with 100 grain nibs at 294. I rebuilt my 400's at 27 1/2" with 80 grain tips and they came out like 303grains. I have a 26 1/2" - 27" draw, bow is set at 56lbs with 65% let off. Both arrows shoot 279-284 fps + or - 3%. My FOC's and spine are off though, 500(correctly spined)= 14.06 and the 400(stiff)= 10.72 (archers advantage numbers). 10's are my friend. 12's and 14's are icing on the cake.
Hope I answered your question there. Feel like I may have skirted it a lil.

wow!
i never knew there was that much to our arrows. i generally went with what "felt" good.
i also only really shoot aluminium arrows too though.......i use drop away rests on both bows, so i put the cock vane up.
i definitly learned a LOT in those couple paragraphs though.
thanks!!
BTW....the "informal" indoor league i shoot in pa, there's about 20 to 25 of us shooting. all but 3 or 4 of us are shooting matthews........me, another lefty, and 1 or 2 others are the only hoyts.
i think it's the archer though, not the arrow, or bow.......i had a pse...didn't like at all......a martin.......liked it a lot, but wanted the camo hoyt i havew pictured, and couldn't afford to keep em both at the time.......and these 2 hoyts. i love the way they feel. the camo bow is extremely light, and good for the 3D shoots. the flamed bow is noticably heavier, but even so, i feel as if i can hold it a bit steadier for a bit longer when shooting it indoors.
-
Cap, it's not the shooter it is the bow, keep your Hoyt and you will always be better! J/K, although I do love my Hoyt's :o). Speaking of loving my Hoyt's, I'm off to the Archery range!

lucky bastage....i hafta shower and then go to a staff meeting. :cry

Hoyts are great bows. I dont like their draw cycles on their cams. I find they are a bit harsh. I like a gradual build throughout the draw up to the let off. I found the Hoyts to have a bit of stagger in the power curve of the cams. Dont take that as a bash cause its not meant to be. Just an observation based on preference. I think Bowtechs have some of the harshest drawing cams while the Mathews, PSE-NRG cams, and the Ross all have a bit of smoother power curve I take more of a liking to.
I think the biggest majority of bows being sold today are all great bows that offer the future as well as existing shooters a great selection to choose from. The shop I shoot for has a great selections from Hoyt, Mathews, PSE, Bowtech, Ross, Quest***COUGH***ross, and a few other odd mixes. At some point I do end up getting to shoot them all and it wouldnt be fair to bash any one of them cause they are all great shooters. Shoot what ya brung and have fun shooting.
Archery is a very old sport. Its one of those things that really has stood the test of time and I'm always happy to see others taking part in keeping history alive. Granted archery isnt today what it was in the old days, specialy with these mechanical marvels some of us shoot. I think it will be intersting to see where it ends up.
Looks like I get to go shoot some tomorrow. :aok

:aok

Well put, Although I am quite biased I know as well as anyone it is the great Ford/Chevy debate. Is one really better than the other? (Yes, the Chevy obviously). It is all about personal preference. For me, I am locked into Hoyt. My good friend is the Human Resources Manager for Hoyt and I would be down 1 friend if I shot anything else, plus living 10 minutes from where they are made if there ever was an issue with it there would be no need to send it off for weeks at a time to get it fixed. Living in Utah there are really 3 brands you see. Hoyt, Mathews, and PSE (including AR and Browning in the PSE Mix). Personally I don't like PSE's, I think they are ugly and hate the way they shoot. I drove about an hour to the nearest Bowtech dealer a couple years ago and shot the Tribute model when it was new, I was impressed with it and thought it shot great. I don't think I have seen more than 1 person shooting a Bowtech at my local shop here though.

ODBAL, I just upgraded from a Golden Eagle Orion series to a Parker Hornet 2 Plus. My question to you is what type of sight are you using. I have an old single pin sight on the Eagle but it won't transfer to the new bow. By single pin I mean from the bottom. I looked at the Apex series but I'm not to familiar with the new technology since I haven't shot or hunted for 15 years as of last year. Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

Spaz,
What are you using your bow for mostly, or singularly? Do you shoot 3D and hunt? Or just hunt? If you just hunt do you have a fixed yardage you are more than likely to shoot from? And, how much do you want to spend?
I had a Sureloc Sportsmans Special on my last "hunting bow" that was a single sliding pin. I absolutely loved it. Couple that with the Archer's Advantage software and you have a winner. They are very expensive though, and unless you know how far you are shooting from it may not be the best for hunting. They do make a sliding 3 pin sight which would be better for hunting. HHA also seems to make some good sights that are similar to the Sureloc.
If you want a 5 pin more traditional sight I have heard great things about the Spot Hogg sights, and G5 makes a very nice one also. I would get on archerytalk.com and check out their classifieds. If you are patient you will be able to find something there for a great price. Make sure you check their feedback before you buy it though. If you get there and register send me a friends invite, my name there is SaltLakeArcher

I'll do that tonight.
I basically hunt and I'll be competing in a league this winter. I use my hunting set up during league and have never shot any 3D. I generally have my pin set at 20 yards and then shoot different distances by pin location( above the bullseye at 30 yards, below at 10 etc.). I figure there may not be much adjustment with this bow because its rated at 325 fps. I believe my Eagle w/ overdraw shoots at 275 fps but I'm not sure. As far as money goes I was looking at $130.00 to $180.00. I can sell the sight on which is a Cobra brand, not sure of the exact make. I bought the bow used from a guy that only hunted with it twice. I'll post a picture if I can figure out how to get one on here. :D
I'm going to my local archery shop tonight to get my wife sized up for a bow. I had a Mathews that I bought used and sold it there on consignment. Thanks for the help.... :salute

Spaz, Check out this link on Archerytalk. This guy has some sights for sale at $70.00 each, been on there quite a while. I would PM him and offer him $60.00 shipped and see if he would take it. For your use I would get the 3 pin slider. Your bow will probably shoot roughly the same pin at 20/30, so you could set your pins at 20/30, 40, and 50. Then it will slide and you can use the bottom pin for targets out past 50. Do yourself a favor and find some 3D shoots in your area and go shoot them! It is a blast. Here is the linky....
