I was sitting at Logans Roadhouse earlier today eating a delicious Southwestern BBQ grilled chicken with a loaded baked potato and some Mac. I was sitting near a TV and I was with my little cousins. So I watch CNN instead. Im reading the bottom. And I see russian Bombers intercepted by Canadian jets. Im like wtf. Does anyone have anything else about this?

I heard about it too.

The russians are coming.
"Emergency! Everyone to get from street!"

Happens all the time, much more often in the last couple of years though. They recently sent a Bear right through the middle of a major naval exercise and buzzed a carrier just a couple of hundred feet right over the deck. On top of that, they sent a small fleet to South America and did an exercise with Venezuela and Cuba to prove they could project power into our backyard and that they have friends on our continent.
I think it's posturing in the face of the growing realization that energy economics will drive international relations and global pressure in the coming decades. They are a major energy exporter with a general weak economy and currency, and they do not want other nations to think that they are in any way susceptible to external pressure.
I suspect that the only real military aim of the Russian flights, aside from continuing to prove the presence of a real deterrent and to test our reactions, is to give them a bit of leverage over the issue of the US basing ballistic missile defenses in Europe. That whole concept really bugs them because it throws 60+ years of both officially negotiated policy and unofficial posture out of whack, and for them to reasonably and equally respond to BMD systems in Europe would require restarting the arms race that bankrupted the Soviet Union in the first place. Their only conceivable response to BMD in Europe would be better ballistic missiles (think stealthy and maneuverable boost, midcourse, and re-entry vehicles), and that would require a corresponding upgrade of both our own missile deterrents and missile defenses. Expensive race with no finish line.

Breaking news!
During routine training flight prehistoric Russian bombers were spotted by two f-18 in international air space!120 miles from Canadian air border they turned around and returned to base,as they always do.
You guys can blow any little bullcrap out of proportion. Its amazing.
P.S.My apologies to Americans.

putin has been slowing giving himself power, russia is getting shady again, esp after the whole georgia war.
and the russian air force is nothing to worry about, saw this a couple weeks ago

At least 1/3 of the USAF F-15 fleet is also in pretty bad shape. All F-15s (except most of the F-15Es) have fairly restrictive operational limits right now because they're so old. Our fleet is in terrible shape and the only reason why we aren't seeing the same problems the Russians are is because we "retired" so many that we have a lot of spare parts for our dramatically reduced fleet.
And of course we're going to shut down the F-22 line after building less than half of the number we really need (in my opinion)...

You better include our own little air force into that. What was wearing thin previous to Gulf War part Duex is now in real shambles. It's no wonder they're trying to transition many pilots into Predators.
Remember, all F15's grounded a year (2?) or so ago, (after that accident where one came apart in-flight, in Missouri I believe, though could be wrong) put a lot of stress on an already aging -16 fleet. Even with all our maintenance, I'd be really surprised if we weren't too far behind the Russian's problems. Remember also, they put much less stress on their existing airframes in the 90's, when they couldn't afford to fly them and just maintained 'em in readiness. Meanwhile, we flew the crap outta our birds, in three warzones (Gulf 1, 2, and Afghan) and one conflict (Serbia). Our fleet of fighters have real issues.
The Viper is a great plane, but its' legs make it suspect. In-Flight gas just makes another tempting target for a real foe to take out, which is why you want something with legs, if possible. As Eagl said, we didn't even contract out for less than half the prior build on the F-22. I don't know how we're going to control the airspace over any near term conflict, honestly, if we're contested seriously. With smaller nations beginning to get generation 4.5 jets (J-10, J-11, Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen, SU-30 MK)...... it really could get messy.

Actually, I think noone is "blowing this out of proportion." They were spotted by NORAD, get your facts straight.

I think ridley was being humorous KGB. Canada feels like the Russians shouldnt be that close (190km) since they set the limit at 200km but it is not a breach of international law. Putin would say 'just checking!' :D

Ah! The good ol' "get you facts straight" ,i think its even worse than "go read a book"
CNN news presented it as "intercepted",not "spotted".Not straight enough?

well right now our airforce is more than capable, and i don't forsee us needed all that many of them, with the economy I don't think its a bad thing that they're shutting down the line, those things cost a pretty penny... which we don't have.
i still believe, or at least would like to believe our airforce is far superior to Russia, like i said, Putin has slowly been gaining power, and they're becoming much more secretive, I'll bet even more planes they have can't fly. Remeber they went broke in 89' and we kept spending, so I'd like to believe we're still miles ahead of them.
-
LOL, the Canadians actually have fighter jets? WTG guys up north.
I don't think that Tu-95 has a chance to win against CF-18.
-
Hmmmm... I wonder how many F-22s we could have built if we hadn't spent all that money.... Sorry skuzzy! :devil
$339 million for an F-22 http://www.globalsecurity.org/org/news/2006/060227-f-22-price.htm (http://www.globalsecurity.org/org/news/2006/060227-f-22-price.htm)
$3,000,000,000,000 / 339,000,000 = ~8849.6
Or 8850 F-22s.
-
They need the cross country practice since they shut everything down in 1991, and we need the intercept practice since we've been investigating C152s penetrating the ADIZ. Guys need a challenge sometimes.

Russia announced it would give Lebanon 10 MiG-29s as a gift, adding that the aircraft were not new and each warplane had a different degree of wear. Russia promised to modernize the jets "to normal export standards" before delivery.
i wonder if I write Putin if I can get a "gift" ...just 1 of em. even if it can't fly it would be cool to say " I own a MIG 29!" it would take up the whole driveway BUT i could park my bike under its wings :D
The downside is my wife probably wouldn't be able to get her kia sportage into hte garage with it sitting in the driveway. My neighbor on that side would probably like it tho :aok

I have a funny feeling military spending is going to be one of the big casualties of the current economic crisis. Bad for the US, but even worse for the sit-on-the-fence European 'allies' quite happy to let the US, along with Canada, Australia and Britain, to bear the brunt of any dirty work needing done.
Of course, I'm sure BAE would be more than willing to sell you some of their much cheaper Typhoons. Just don't ask for any of the source code. Its secret and Yanks can't keep secrets... ;)
-
I have a funny feeling military spending is going to be one of the big casualties of the current economic crisis.
Before the economic crisis hit, candidate Obama was promising to cut military spending by 25%, unilaterally cut our nuclear deterrent force, take our strategic forces off of "the highest alert", and cancel any development projects using "unproven" technology (basically anything that hadn't been done before). That was before the nearly $800 billion barrel of pork was even considered.
Now it's his responsibility and they're not just words he's saying to a camera, so it's anyone's guess what he'll really do. A 25% defense cut in any circumstances (war, peace, or "cold war") would immediately change the balance of power in the world, and you can bet that the realities of what our military really does have been briefed to him extensively in the last couple of months. Again, who knows what he'll do but we know what he promised, and I don't know anyone in the military business who thinks what he said he would do is coincident with a rational approach to national security.
-
Yes, the Russkies are back, they've been sniffing around the British Isles a lot lately. I heard that last year they got as close as twenty miles to the British coast in a 'Blackjack' bomber. Despite what you think, they get useful military info by flying bombers close to the line. They check out intercept times and see how long the interceptors can stay. They keep RAF Tornadoes busy by flying down past Scotland. But once they get off the Irish coast, the RAF has to break off for fuel because they're not allowed cross our airspace. Ireland has no intercept capability, so they go unmolested as close as they like to the Irish coast. We haven't had a fighter since the last Spitfire was retired. :o So they've pretty much worked out that that's a bit of blind spot for the RAF.
Their carrier groups sail down the west coast as well. Recently while carrying out underway replenishment of fuel for the carrier. Something went wrong and tons of fuel were dumped in the sea. True to form the Russians denied it was them. Luckily it didn't hit land in the end.
It's all part of the posturing they've started again in recent years.
-
Yep blown out of proportion. During the cold war this was a weekly occurance.
In the last couple of years the Bear has been exercising it's military muscle, and this is happening again much more frequently than most people realize. It's nothing new, we have been intercepting them for decades.
Has nothing to do with Obamamessiah being in Ottawa.

Yes, the Russkies are back.
Once again it proves that no matter what system has formidable military power, it will always be evil.
Ireland is in no immediate danger, there's nothing that worth conquering.
Romans didn't bother, neither will "Russkies"
-
It is fairly simple, we are training a next generation air combat force, with the ability to patrol every sector of this planet.
Whos ships, aircraft and installations will all be manned, but not by people in the same general area.
Imagine a sight like the aces high con, only military and every single computer hooked upto its own plane/drone/aircraft/tank.
its coming...
Drones rock, they are small.. fast and can pull max g's and you will never black out. best of all, the more made the cheaper they become to product, the cheaper they are to produce the more expandable they become.
When it comes to a russian flying a cloned b-29 off my coast, that's fine, but the russians better be very afraid of our stealth unmanned drones flying at mach 3 able to pull 12+g's and carrying two aim9-x or amramm missiles.
And no, i am not talkin' about the p.o.s. prop driven drones you all know and love.
And if anyone still has doubts, just remember we are the only air force in the world who has machines that can take off, fly, refuel drop ords, refuel again and fly home. All without anyone ever touching a thing, with computers who can visualy identify what make / model / country of a target, can recognise a russian star from a NATO one, for christ sake in the 80's we made a self guided missiles that can drop bombs on target's while on its WAY to its OWN target!
The russians and chinese developed some "so called" super fast stealth torpedo, only to find out our military has been developing the same thing sence the 70's, now the real kicker is the ruskins and pongs of this world could only reach a speed of around 400 knots, all the while in the 80's and on the americans and british have WORKING version's reaching mach 2.5+ UNDER WATER.
Dont even get me started on the rail gun cannons we have on dang near ever satellite, or the ion cannons, or the lasers cutting your nukes in half, of the invisible microwaves that will cook the million of troops you try to land here.
Kickin' your bellybutton in space, kickin' your bellybutton in the air, kickin' your bellybutton on the ground, ,kickin' your bellybutton under it all.
Yeah com'on ivan, show us what you got. :rock

So this brings up a question that's had me think... Does a prop planes engine give off enough heat for a A2A heatseaking (i.e. aim-9x) to lock on to? Or would it be up to the Radar Guided Missiles?
-
:rofl They're not cloned B29s, the Bears are turboprops, plenty of heat signature there. The Blackjacks are jets like a big B1. I love BaDkaRmA158Th's spin on things. Yo, kick bellybutton boy :aok

Let me just say that underestimating or thinking lesser of anyone based on race creed or color is a huge mistake.
never underestimate another human being, each and ever action taken should be watched and remembered, consider someone walking upto you, and poking you in the forehead, then going back into his house.
Each day, he would come out, poke you in your forehead, and go home, again..and again..and again, never saying a word, never giving a reason as to WHY.
Then one day he comes out and shoots you in the face, you are now dead.
But the people around you who saw this all happening day in and day out, only have one thing to say. "We saw this coming, was only a matter of time."
Consider each and ever russian bomber that fly's near us, a proverbial poke in the forehead.
Edit:The Johnny Five (5) human pacification robot was american made, and showed ample reason to reproduce into smaller faster stonger, version's for home infiltration and stealth missions, as shown on short Short circuit 2. :salute

No, now crawl back under your rock shadesboi. We'll see you trip over your tongue again in six months.
In order to "intercept", they would be "spotted/showing on NORAD" (which did happen). Maybe if you read more, your reading comprehension would increase. Hey I know! How about a "Chicken or the Egg?" argument from you?!!!

I'm very sorry.
Don't get me wrong Ireland is an amazing country, lot of history, castles, beautiful language. Some day i will get drunk and arrested on old soaked in history and blood Irish soil.
But strategically Ireland is pointless, believe me it is a good thing.

Living in Iceland, which IS a strategically important location, this happens all the time and is hardly news. During the cold war, F-4's got scrambled all the time because of a "Bear" presense.
Then it stopped, but started again, and I'm not sure if it hits the news any more.
Both the Brits and the Norse have been scrambling jets as well.
Anyway, it was mentioned that the US fighters were late on the clock after being flown to pieces in past year's conflicts. While they indeed have many more hours than the "string-bagged" Russian aircraft, I tend to belive that they are built for it. And the hours, - very many of them come from training, since the U.S. keeps the bar there very much higher than the Russkies. Maybe higher than anybody?
Then there is more than the US steel facing the Russkies. The USA has allies and they have fighters too :D
-
Ya know sooner or later someone is going to get tired of seeing Russia have all the fun flying their friendly retro fitted b-29 bombers over their territory and decide to have a little fun of their own by flying a few friendly bombers towards Russia.
:D

Wouldn't mind having the US send like a B-2 over Moscow or something like that to completely embarrass the Russians. :aok
-
Well, a young German once did that....in a Cessna :D
-
Understanding how many Sr-71's flew over russia and ( probably still do) i could only figure it alright, you fly to our coast, and turn back, we fly over everything and everyone around the planet and land home safe and sound.
Your war ships move half was across the planet, and our satellites track every ship and plane that moves, your bombers give them self's away by flying low over a huge multi nation fleet of ships (Who do not have order to fire and are not at war time), while we do everything way up high, unknown to anyone but the men operating your radars, only to have any information shut out to your general public as too not allow anyone to know you have been bested.
again, and again and again.
:Edit: Wounder how many quick moving radar (UFO's)Blips, were just Sr-71's full burn running missions.
-Shrugs-
Always a silver lining to all the world of gray.

You're regurgitating nothing that was said by me. But thanks for trying to twist my words. You chose one of about 12 definitions for the term presently in use.
Here's the proper definition regarding this issue: Intercept (verb) - to intersect. I don't even need a dictionary to know this KgB, keep working on the 2nd language. My understanding of the English language is more than adequate.

Isn't that the Riel Erickson who was featured on the Discovery channel programme 'Jetstream'.

Poking around like that as well as intercepting, - all a waste of time and money. I thought that the Russkies had something else to do with it :devil

Car engines give off enough heat.....so I think the answer would be yes. ;)
-
It landed on the red square, yes.
The Russkies plotted it several times, however the chain of command never gave fast enough permission to shoot it down before it was gone. Well, it was a flight on the deck.
Anyway, an IR should do it. Gets a tad more tricky if you're hugging the deck though.
BTW, a Raptor gives much more IR. And even looking into tank warfare, the target of choice would be the Abrams....
-

I doubt this is true. The USAF has had many female F-15C pilots stationed in Alaska for more than a decade, and it's unlikely that none of them participated in the many intercepts in the last couple of decades.
Can't prove it, but I don't believe the claim.
-
The intercept in Icelandic airspace were, if memory serves, counting by the hundreds during the last decades.
The interceptors would usually fly close to the Bear, and the papers frequently posted pictures from close up.
-
Capt Riel Erickson was the first Canadian Female fighter pilot to intercept a Russian aircraft.
It was not this latest Obamamessiah media frenzy though. It actually happened over a year ago IIRC.
