:furious I didn't think such a thing as a bad WW2 airshow existed, today I went to one..
lets see we had a B17, a B24, a SBD, and a goon.. thats it..
and worse yet, on the flyer/program it listed the B24 as a B25 :uhoh
oh yea, and it was all static display.. not one plane in the air, not one engine start up..
I put off going out of town for this. :cry
-
looks like they had an NOE planned
-
Sadly to say and i mean to disrespect but..
"lets see we had a B17, a B24, a SBD, and a goon.. thats it.."
That is 4 more planes our grand children will probably never ever see after our life times.
They will be piloting UFOs and even f4's and vintage f-35's will be how we view sabre's and such from the 50's.

that's my father in the second pic, he had a good time so it wasn't a total waste.

I like the static display portions of shows as much as the flights. That's where you really get to see the details. :)

I don't think you fully appreciate what that B-17G went through.
Saw the pic, immediately went to my bookmarks and here you go:

It looks like they were from The Lonestar Flight Museum in Galveston. They're still recovering from Hurricane Ike so I suppose you were lucky to see them at all.
The Collings foundation flys a B-17, B-24, B-25 and P-51C around every year, which I just missed, offering rides for a fee. Otherwise, they just sit there.
I can only think of three or four airshows in Texas a year with LOTS of planes and the pyro and stuff.
Go to Corpus Christi April 18-19. Blue Angels and stuff.

the Blue Angles were over in Tuscaloosa, AL this past weekend. I heard that Saturday was a great day for it but Sunday it was spitting rain and other nasty surprises all day around here so it was probably passed off and cut short.

well, they were only off by one number... :)

The one in Temple is pretty big (it's around Mother's Day every year). They do pearl harbor & battle of the bulge reenactments. :) I don't know how much of their items come from down yonder where the hurricane hit though. So who knows how large it will be this year. *shrugs*
-
At least you had Warbirds there, last two airshows I was at the closest they got was a Grasshopper.
-
The odds of seeing a B24 and a 17 together at an airshow are fairly slim, unless you get the Collings Foundation 17 and 24. My guess is you got Lonestars B17G and the CAF B24A which sometimes operate together. I'd say you were privileged to have that opportunity with all of 2 B24s flying in the world right now. And I believe the number of Dauntless fliers are smaller then that.

Not the original Thunderbird. "Thunderbird", BN-U sn: 42-38050 was scrapped post-war in (Kingpin? Kingfischer?) in one of the Carolinas IIRC.

I still have posters from when it was in Georgetown before it moved to Temple.
Awesome airshow, sad that it had to move to Temple (well, for me atleast, I coulda walked there if I had to)
-
It was scrapped in Kingman , Arizona . They still have a huge , super long runway from which bomber crews trained . it is about 100 miles southeast of Las Vegas , Nevada . Lots of history all around there .

Well when you hear about an AIR show you expect something to take place in the air... the planes were not museum pieces, we arent talking about davinci's helicopter or the Wright Flyer.. .. they flew to get here.. but then for the actual "show" they just sit.. done even fire up the engines.. not one even one of them??
yes it was nice to see them up close and all, but an AIR show featuring airworthy aircraft that is 100% static display is kinda dumb.

I could give less of a damn about who thinks what or who wants to stroke each others ego regarding the matter. :aok
Really high and mighty of someone to say someone its childish because someone went to an AIRSHOW only to find out there would be no flying of any kind involved.. Anyone would no matter how "mature" would be let down by such a suprise, and anyone who says they wouldn't is full of crap, but I guess it wouldn't be an official AH thread if someone didn't try to play the "im better than you" game at some point.

You really have no idea what goes into these events, do you?
Your admission was $5. What do you expect for five dollars? You don't have any idea about the apperance fees for the airplanes, lodging for the pilots, support staffers, etc. Liability insurance. Concessions.
The organizers for this airshow would have worked their collective tulips off to bring these airplanes together so you could spend five bucks being entertained for an afternoon admiring a great collection of flyable airplanes.
For $450 you could have gone for a ride in the B-24. A very quick google search shows a B-52 flyby as well.
In fact it appears the airshow went exactly as advertised according to this April 1 press release:
Wings over the Crossroads

Victoria Regional Airport is hosting the “Wings over the Crossroads” fly-in on Saturday and Sunday, April 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The airport will host planes from all over. Admission is $5 and children under six get in free.
“This is the largest assemblies of airplanes in this area,” said airport manager Larry Blackwell.
The fly-in will feature the newest Navy helicopter, rare aircraft and antique cars. There will be food and fun for people of all ages. Special kids’ activities and clowns doing face painting will be included in the entertainment. Many of the aircraft will have ladders so that patrons can view the cockpits. Visitors will in some cases be able to sit in or tour planes.
Blackwell says that the bombers are a big draw for the crowds and that kids especially like the fighter jets. On Saturday only, there will be a B-52 fly over. There will be an F-5 Aggressor like the ones used in the movie Top Gun. Other featured planes include the T-6 Texan, C-47 Gooney, WWII US Navy SB2C, B-17 Flying Fortress and many more.
Area community organizations including the Navy and Army National Guard will have booths.
“We hope the community has an outstanding time,” Blackwell said.
Tours and rides will be available for an additional fee. More information may be obtained by contacting Bettye Pribly at 361-573-9402.

yeppers, other than the B52 flyover saturday... there was nothing else. of course the advert didnt mention that there would be nothing flying (except for a single pass of a 52 on sat) I guess they fdigured people would assume that an air show means nothing flys... i mean its common sense, no need to mention that. :uhoh
but geez, your right, I guess if I wanted to see something fly I should have paid them the $450 huh? :lol
and I didnt set the price, they did.. if $5 per person (plus all the crap they were selling at absurd prices) wasnt enough to warrant making the airplanes fly at least once.. well that really wasnt very well throught out was it.

And you feel your $5 was misspent? Do you feel they misrepresented themselves to swindle you out of five bucks?
I would give you a ride in a number of airplanes with round engines gratis if I knew you'd appreciate it. It's pretty clear that you wouldn't.

I dont feel ripped off, just that it was a wast of time and yes, it was fairly misrepresented.. When you see "THIS WEEKEND! AIRSHOW!!!" do you immediatly expect nothing to be flying, or even moving? no, you expect.. yes.. an AIR SHOW.
-
After reading the press release, just wondering if you would have qualified for the free admission :)

What is your position on museums?

Without getting into semantics all of the advertising materials I've found for the Wings over the Crossroads in Victoria this past weekend had an accurate representation of what to expect. From the press release listed above to some promotional videos about the event.
I'm amazed that you'd go to an event like this, be entertained for a few hours for five bucks and then come post your complaint here. You're complaining about a years worth of hard work by the event planners and I'm sure they'd be happy to hear how disappointed you were in their effort.

You're selfish Wingnutt. You also lack appreciation, so here's an idea. Next year don't go to that show again. Folks put a lot of time into that show.
-
One also has to consider to fly these warbirds cost anywhere between 2,000- 5,000 dollars per hour.
Consider the cost to fly them to that show.

I get too. Yankee Air Muesum has a flying 17, 25 and 47. I can fondle them as often as I like when I'm in the hangar.

:furious Was that really necessary? :)
The closest I've been to a WWII aircraft was in the Udvar-Hazy center of the National Air & Space Museum. So about 10 feet.

You live in PA. Go to the WWII Weekend in Reading this summer. Lots of flying and you can fondle all sorts of airplanes and ground vehicles. They have a mock up of a French town where they stage a skirmish. It's awesome. Last year they had 2 Corsairs, a P-47M and a P-40 flying in a low alt luftberry. The P-40 even did some low alt high speed passes over the crowd. There is usually a B-17 and several B-25s that give rides too if you have the means. I got an autograph from a B-24 flight engineer that was shot down and captured at Ploesti! Bud Anderson was there last year too. It's a big show that goes on for 3 days every July. Don't miss it!

I had meant to go last year, but I didn't get to. I will try again this year.

I agree with the "if it says air show then you should expect something to be in the air" but the ad does NOT say that anywhere...it says fly-in...and thats exactly what happened.
I go to the Wings Over Houston airshow every year...definantly worth every sunburn and penny it costs. Pyrotechnics from the pearl harbor re-enactment is a must see, and the hundred some-odd planes that are displayed and flown...i think Wings Over Houston is one of the best air shows ive ever been to

No WW2 reenactors? Could've really contributed to the vibe of a WW2 air base.
