There is a Romanian Dragunov at the local gun store and I want it. It's $856 but I don't have the moolah. Dangit!

They look cool, I'll admit... But I'd rather have a heavy barrel 700...

Honestly I'm looking for A gun but I don't know if I want a rifle, a shotty, or a dragunov for the hellof it. it'dbe reallly cool to have the dragunov but I or my friend don't have the money to put into it. I hope it's not gone when I do have the money though. I was looking around Remmy's at R700's and stuff but I'd rather have a semi. My dad has a pump 270 and a semi 270, but honestly I don't really deer hunt. I'm more turkey/duck/goose.

Sniper rifle. 20mm. Nuff said.

After we get ourselves a 1903(or the Enfield version, which I would prefer) we were looking at some Lee Enfields. All are Mk. 3s, and my friend even has the Jungle Carbine version.
And they're reasonable too, $250-275. We may just get one of those instead of a 1903. Very interesting with what you can find at the local pawn shops.

Ya know they make those for women now too, right?

If you just want to shoot get yourself a 22 pistol conversion. Something like a CZ 75 firing .22/9mm and a couple of mags for both. Shoot all day for ten bucks and yet still a meaningful defense gun should you decide to use it that route. You can find them new for 700-800 dollars and used for a lot less. Also unless you rich ammo price will effect how much you shoot. That killer round might be fun to shoot but at a dollar a round how long can you do it? I have one gun that the ammunition costs 15 to 20 bucks a round. They are hand loaded and I am counting time here but you get the point. I go and spend two hours to shoot 10 rounds at 1000 yards. That might not seem fun but when you cover the group with your hand its great fun for me. The type of gun that would be the most fun depends on money and priorities. If you just want something to go bang (or pop in this case) a .22 will be your best bet.

Get a Ruger "slabside" .22 pistol. Work on your Fundamentals prior to dropping coin on rifles, etc. Ruger 22's have always had a smooth trigger pull, when compared to Browning Buckmarks, etc.
My $.02.

You can buy the Romanian PSL's for much cheaper online.

I think I'm looking at a R-15 or R-25 seriously. Gander Mtn has an R-15 but the 223 is too small for deer IMHO. The R-25 is newer, probably more expensive but it has an option for 243, 7mm, or 308. I'd probably look at 7mm...does anyone know good sites to shop online for guns, or at least to look around and get pricing? I'm thinking of going to cabelas when my dad goes to East Hartford, but Cabelas is probably 3x as expensive...I can't seem to find pricing right from remington, either.

The June 09 issue of shooting times had the .30 RAR featured and listed an MSRP of $1225.00 for it. It also has a single loading with a 125 gr. bullet at this time. That's the only loading they had in the magazine and it is comparable to the regular .308 Remington round with the same bullet. The .30 RAR is a far shorter round so using a heavier bullet is likely to have less velocity than the regular .308 (7.62 NATO) is capable of limiting your hunting options.
There are AR style rifles that have been built up to handle the larger .308 round and those might be a better choice for you especially until some ammo manufacturer decides to make a factory round for the .30 RAR.

I googled that article and read it through as well. So you are saying I should look around for an R-25 and not a R-15?

Thats a pretty cool rifle, the R-25. I just went to Rems websight.
If it was me I'd get the .308 Win chambering, tho the 7mm-08 is a great load. Even the .243 will put down any deer that ever munched corn. But I love the .308 win and it will give you a bit more bite if Elk or Moose come up on the menu.
I just looked at that new load, the 30 Rem ER. A 125 core Lock at 2800 fps will take any deer cleanly.

Yeah I'd love to get a 308 but at this point I just found out the R25 is way out of my price range since it's so new, I was hoping to find a used one or something...
Yeah I saw the 30 Rem...but how expensive are the rounds? They will fit into a R-15...

For hunting purposes I'd go buy a Savage 110 in .243 or larger and save the money you'd spend on an AR look a like. You could get a nice Savage (great rep for accuracy too) and a scope for about a third or less than the .30 RAR.
If you want a "fun gun" get a SKS or a Ruger mini 30 and enjoy a semi auto rifle with a "decent" caliber and relatively cheap ammo. I say "decent" as I am not a fan of any .22 caliber fro hunting anything larger than rabbits. The 7.62 x 39 round isn't up top the .308 (7.62 NATO) but far better than the .223 shell.
You could get both the Savage and the fun gun for what you would spend on the .30 RAR.
Just my opinon there for the suggestion.

That's my only problem...I' only have/will be able to spend about 500/600...thats why I was *hoping* to find an R15/R25 used for cheaper...maybe even 700. Though I'm not too sure I like the bolt action rifles, that sure looks like a nice gun. My dad has a couple .270's, one is a pump the other is a semi.

At that price, I'd say a PolyTech M1A... .308 semi auto, 20rd mags, Military look, (if ya dig that), black compo stock... Sure its a Chinese knockoff of an M14...
But they shoot well enough, are of decent enough quality and reliabilty... And have enough of the goofy gizmos that bolt onto it, to keep any gizmo lover happy for years...
:salute and happy gun shopping... I always enjoy that too!!!

Can you get FN SLR's or Lithgow L1A1's over there? They're a really nice 308 semi.

Yup, the L1A1/SLR was a very popular rifle in the armed forces of many commonwealth countries (ie UK, Aussie, NZ etc). See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_SLR
We have weird stocks on NZ too avoid what we call 'E-cat' classification - its a sort of MSSA law here.
-
Considered a rifled 12-gauge Slug gun? Drop just about anything with the new Hornady Sabot slugs.
Failing that pick up an SKS on the cheap and mount a more expensive optics package to it? As for shopping around, check out : http://www.davidsonsinc.com/consumers/subsites/inven_search.asp?
It's pretty darn comprehensive. Not all the prices are dead-bang accurate (no pun intended, oddly enough) but should give you a good ball park figure. I swear by anything Springfield Armory makes, and their M1A line looks mighty appealing, but not cheap. If you could find a used one of those....schwing!
Love those FN's, wish I could find one around here.

I found one for 700 bucks but the bid ends in 2 days...everything on the site that Toof posted was well over 1 grand for the M1A.
Even the R15's and R25's are 1300 still...
-
That's kind of why I made the suggestions I did. The fun gun can be changed in appearance with an aftermarket stock and so on. The Savage is about the most accurate low cost rifle there is and between it and the 700, I'd save the bucks and go with the Savage. Accuracy won't suffer.
-
Ya do know, that MOST, 99% of those FN Rifles that you see around, are teardowns Right?
Parts kits reassembled on Brazilian made IMBEL recievers, and refinished with new Parkerize...
Quality varies WIDELY, the civvie ones I've tried out weren't very good... The ppl I know who
bought them, ended up selling them soon after.. That pretty much goes for all the variations too..
Metric/Standard, L1, FAL, STG, MG724.. Don't buy one, unless ya look at it closely first...
There are a few well prepped IMBEL reciever FN units around, but they are easily over 1G...
Entreprise Arms, built the best ones.. Built their own recievers too...
Buyer Beware!!!
Ya know what ya really need, is a copy of Shotgun News.. Just one issue will have more
wholesale guns in it, that you can find on the net in many weeks of looking...
And the prices are stated clearly and openly...
And an FFL holder will charge about 10 to 20% to order it for ya.. Thats the going rate
around here anyway.. Although fellow rifle club members will often do it for zip...
Just a word of the wise, from somebody who has been around this stuff before...

Some of my old squaddies (I call them my old squaddies since I haven't played since december) Are ex-military and have access to an acronym that escapes me at the moment.
It's basically a stockpile of Garands, and many other different service rifles that can be bought by the "now civilian/ex- military". Sure someone will chime in with what that particular place is. Only a few located throughout the nation if my memory serves me. Ex-Military types have better access to it than that civilian population, but there are a few ways in as a civilian. Might be a lotta work, but to see some of the Garands these guys bought...man...beautiful pieces of work.

Yeah I year ya...that's the one thing I don't like though, is bolt actions. I've never really liked them ...no real reason, just haven't. I'm going to have to look around at other brands though lik savage to see if there are any others I might be interested in.
-
Someone brought up 4 different bolt actions yesterday (243, 270, 7mm and 308) and I think since they are cheaper I'm going to go with Maverick's idea and get a bolt first. Ivebeen looking around a bit and found this one:
http://www.bigskyguns.com/Left_Handed_Rifles-Savage_Model_11_111_FL_Left_Handed.html
I'm a lefty (I can shoot a righty gun) but if it's going to be my gun I figured I might as well be able to shoot it comfortably.
I was looking at the specs on it and I saw that the regular 270 wasn't listed as this is the one I was going to get, becauseI was trying to find out how many rounds the mag would hold. I'd assume right around 4?
-
The .308 would be my choice as it is a standard Nato as well as very common factory round. It also has a very wide variety of slugs ranging from varmint up to some heavy ones like the 180 gr. The .308 Remington (7.62 Nato) is best with the middle to lighter weights. 165 gr and a bit lower towards the 125 gr. for hunting. There are some really great target and hunting bullets made for it to allow you to get the most out of the rifle and ammo combination. It also has a great accuracy record.

So you suggest I get a .308 then? The only reason I was going to get a 270 was because my dad has 2 270s and that way we can have ammo for each.

That's a bit overkill for a deer, I mean if they came in that shot I'd get it, but 308 is the biggest for Savage 111 LH.

Why, if you want a hunting rifle where you will be making long shots... Get a 1903.
Was reading this book called "doughboys" about the Americans in WWII, talks about how some American soldier saw a German Machinegun unit of 7, shot 3 in the head at 700 yards, and the rest turned tail.
:aok

So you suggest I get a .308 then? The only reason I was going to get a 270 was because my dad has 2 270s and that way we can have ammo for each.
The idea of common ammo is nice but so is a bit of variety. That doesn't mean each rifle will shoot as well with the same ammo either. Besides the .270 wasn't listed as available in that rifle list you had. The .308 is very common caliber ammo itself and has tons of options for loads.
-
I believe the Savage 111, is the short action version of the 110.. So you won't find it chambered for any "full length cartridges"...
Good choice Spike, the Savage actions are smooth, and quick.. A little loose as compared to others, but thats where the quickness
comes from.. Accuracy is good as well.... .308winnie is your best choice, IMO.... Because of the easy availability of match grade
bullets and ammo... And you are only giving up approx 100 or 200 fps to a .30/06.. Damn good cartridge overall...
I wouldn't hunt Elk or Moose with it, but it'll do anything else very well...
Good shootin

RC

I've got a .270, and can't imagine a better "general" rifle caliber for deer or antelope, and it's great on elk too if you take reasonable range shots on a broadside animal. The .270 is a very common caliber, and is readily available anywhere ammo is sold. I can buy ammo here in Wisconsin, and buy identical replacement ammo anywhere when I head out west for antelope, mule deer, or elk. It's arguably a bit light for elk and moose by today's standards, but it wasn't so long ago that it was considered perfectly adequate for anything that walked in North America. I've never tried moose with mine, but wouldn't feel under-gunned if I did. Poke a hole through their lungs, and they die...
If you want to load your own ammo, the 270 has a huge variety of possibilities, right up there with the 30-06.
Ballistically, the 270 shoots a bit "flatter" than the 30-06, with a bit more speed, and with a bit less energy. At 400 yds, the 270 has about 6" less drop than a 308 or 30-06, and has a definate energy advantage over the 308.
I've always been a die-hard bolt action rifle shooter as well. It's reliable, and accurate. I've seen too many auto's get stuck when used in dusty conditions, or when oiled too much. The bolt may be a bit slower to fire the second shot, but with a bolt the second shot generally isn't needed anyway.
For the money, I like the Winchester Model 70. Bought mine new for less than 400, and dropped a 200 dollar scope on it. It'll shoot 2-2.5" groups at 200yds all day long with factory ammo, and I shoot at the range with it out to 500yds. In my younger days, I've used it for single-shot kills on antelope at 450yds, and on deer at slightly over 600yds (those were with very accurate hand-loads). I don't really view hunting the same as I did back then, and have shifted to hunting with raptors and flintlock rifles for the challenge. I still drag the 270 out each year for some "grocery shopping" hunts (we eat a ton of venison each year), but I don't really enjoy the ease with which it harvests game anymore. I use the 270 for "shooting" stuff, and the flintlock for "hunting" stuff.
That said, my kids and wife love shooting the 270 as well, since the recoil is so reasonable. Come deer season, it's the caliber they'll be using... (at least until they switch to muzzleloaders, hehe!)

Yeah the .270 or 308 is something I'll go with for sure.
mtnman, thanks for the info. I haven't been much of a bolt person till I shot one/read about them. My dads got a muzzleloader but I haven't shot it. I was talking to someone and he suggested I wait and go to the local gun show around here, as it's huge and I might be able to find a dirt cheap gun (maybe even that R-15/R25) but I'llstill look for bolt's. He said to go on the last day later in the day since gun dealers tend to get rid of them cheaper.
I love venison too, also duck and goose and we tend to do a lot with the meat that we get.

I picked up a Russian surplus Nagant rifle at a gun show a few years ago for $50. Shoots straight as an arrow, if memory serves (which admittedly it may not), it shoots the same 7.62x59 that the Dragunov rifle shoots (from the OP).
If you're looking for a cheap rifle for some long range shooting, might be something to consider.
-
Yeah they shoot the same cartridge, but its 7.62x54R rimmed...
LOL, I know how it is, sometimes the #'s gobbledegook mixes me up too!!

-
7.62x54R
That's it, knew the x59 didn't sound right.
Thing kicks like a mule though. When I bought it, the metal butt plate was screwed on with a single round head screw that stuck out from the very center of the rifle butt. I got the cosmoline cleaned off of it etc and took it out to put a few rounds through it. Probably fired it eight or ten times then had to go in the house to change clothes for some function my wife was dragging me to... Well when I took my shirt off I discover a bunch of little slotted round screw head shaped bruises on my right shoulder. :rofl
Needless to say I replaced the round head screw with an inset screw before taking the rifle out shooting again.
One of these days I'm going to pick up a WW2 Russian sniper scope to put on it.

I hunt deer with a Sigarms SHR-970 (Swiss Hunting Rifle) in 30-06. I paid $450 for it new in 1999. The only "action" smoother than the Sig, was an $800 Weatherby. Even then, it wasn't "that much better".
http://www.sigsauer.com/upFiles/CmsContent/documents/OwnerManual/SHR970OM.pdf (http://www.sigsauer.com/upFiles/CmsContent/documents/OwnerManual/SHR970OM.pdf)
I'd go either .308 or 30-06. Ammo is more openly available, 7mm Mag is getting tougher.
-
I figured I'd just get a .308, like you said 7mm is "retired" or whatever from what I read. It may be more expensive to shoot off at nothing but it'll still have take down power. Depending on what I find at the gun show in april, I may get a semi, bolt, pump, have no idea.
-
Last time I went Elk hunting I hit an Elk from about 325 away with a 225 grn Speer out of a .338 mag. The shot drifted just a tad to much to the rear. It was fatal but he was going to run for awhile, "which we didnt want cause it was near a property border".
Well off this thing goes farther and farther away and I had to wait for him to slow or stop before trying another shot. When he slowed he was so far away I had to aim about a foot and 1/2 over his shoulder compensating for the wind. That bullet from that big magnum hit him right where the neck meets the shoulder and just crumpled him down that mountain. He was so far away I had time to put my eye back on the scope after the shot to watch. And the funny thing was nobody even saw it. :rofl My guide had already left to grab a 4 wheeler.
I know the .270s and 3006s, and the like, are more then adequate but Ive seen some spectacular knock downs with the big mags.

Where I live, sometimes the Elk hunker down next to my cows in the pasture, there are a few big
bulls that are hand fed, you can walk right up to them.. Wouldn't do that during the Rutt tho!!!
Herds pass thru the area regularly, along with Blacktail, Mulees, bear and cougar too... And its
open season on Coyote all year... The hunting is as good as the fishing out here!!!
Mash, I've never tried one of those rifles, but its a Sig, so It's a safe bet that its a good shooter!!
I like .338mag too, just don't own one... Don't really know why, just don't...
I'm a .30 caliber guy, always have been... But I have lots of guns, in many styles and calibers...
Its kinda necessary around here, lots of variations of terrain... On my property, on the coast,
butted right up against Oly National park, the bush is THICK, vis is very limited... So I have a
Henry Replica, in .45LC, and a Ruger .44mag semiauto, that I use for deer... A Ruger 77 stainless/
synthetic, in .300winmag, 20inch Barrel, Lyman receiver peepsight for Elk in the bush...
If I go up into the high country, I have a Rem700BDL .30/06, 3x9x44mm Burris scope for Highbuck..
And a German made Weatherby MK V Deluxe .300MAG, 4x12x50 Swarovski For Elk or Sheep..
And one I bought, just for Chits and Giggles, a .300warrior, it definitely don't make ya giggle tho!!!
Has a lazer etched buttplate, that will leave a Lazzeroni imprinted bruise in your shoulder...
Too much gun.. I've shot it a total of ten times in 5yrs.. Still have the original box of 180's, LOL!!
Its the only one I have that makes me cringe when I pull the trigger.. It destroys scopes too!!!
No matter how $good$ they are, one shot, reticle is MISSING!!! LOL!! Waste of money on that one!!!
Also a whole crowd of the black guns, military style Shotguns, AK/AR15s etc.. And Handguns comin
out my Butt!!! My M1's and my Pops guns, family hairloom stuff...
I'm one of those guys the gungrabbers love to hate, LOL!!!

Not keep harping on Nagants, but they are one of the most fun to shoot "readily availble" rifle around, at least in SC. I've hit clay pigeons at 100 yards with one my buddy bought from a pawn shop for $100...using Wolf ammo, ironsights. Those steel buttplates will get you though :)
Wolf softpoint ammo will also tear a 3 inch wide hole into a license plate at 50 yards....hooray for new plates! :rock
Something about a bolt action just makes me like them even more. Especially in a heavy caliber, in an accurate rifle.

I hunt deer with a Sigarms SHR-970 (Swiss Hunting Rifle) in 30-06. I paid $450 for it new in 1999. The only "action" smoother than the Sig, was an $800 Weatherby. Even then, it wasn't "that much better".

I'd go either .308 or 30-06. Ammo is more openly available, 7mm Mag is getting tougher.
I love Sigarms SHRs! :aok All that I've ever used end up there on my list of "best bolt-action rifles".
I've had the pleasure of trying a variety of cartridges in SHRs (.22lr up to .30-06). My favorite one I've shot was a friends 30-06, I must of put 600 rounds through it one afternoon just shooting at cans. Their compfort, accuracy and smoothness of the action is just... a piece of art (another feature I really like about SHRs because I mostly target shoot and can go through a lot of ammo on a good day: of all the bolt-actions I've shot they have my favorite removable magazine - solid and well-machined yet still slim and light enough that you'll forget you have one in your pocket). Ever since I've had wet dreams about getting my hands on a Sigarms 30-06 of my own some day.
Mash, you really should find a friend who owns one and grab a couple cases of ammo. Compared to the rest of the rifles in your collection, I'd like to know what you think about about one.
