Title: Guess I'm expendable!

I can't tell you how much I love this game but I just went from this...

It's impossible to make out how close you are to the ground or water.  I just don't think this is worth the $15.00.  Got some serious decision making to do.  :cry

Well....  Since I am running a pretty below average system, I guess I am...  There has to be a line...  Really...

Well at least the sky looks good, though I can't make out how close you are to that either.

I sympathize with you rk.
I am in the same boat.

We could have gotten 8 or 10 new vehicles / planes
with the development resources that went into this update.
At least that would not have further burdened our systems.
Instead, we have 2 new planes (thankfully) and new
water and terrain window dressing that cannot be flown or
driven.

So, for the eye candy and 2 new planes, I end
up with a near unplayable game and the 'privilage'
of buying still more hardware in the midst of
a recession to once again make this game enjoyable.
Great news for the youth who play this game and the
unemployed and soon-to-be unemployed!

I think that the great majority of players here would
have been ecstatic to get 6 or so new planes & vehicles
and some new maps without any terrain changes that
are causing the problem people are experiencing now.
Besides, people have been clamoring forever for
new maps and planes, not new water and terrain.

Bottom line is this:  I can't fly terrain or water effects
and now that we have them I can't play the game.

Sorry to see so many people having trouble. I already knew my system could not handle the new changes from running the beta. I know if I want to play I'm going to have to spend cash that I don't have and that would be very irresponsible of me.

There is a chance SOME of you will be able to figure out how to run it and an even higher chance HTC will be putting out more patches that also may help.

Over the next few days keep searching the tech board for answers. I'm sure Skuzzy is well prepared for the onslaught of questions.

Wow I've seen some pretty lame replies in these forums.  Reminds me of what killed ww2online (if I may echo this ONCE again).

The ONLY reason why I played this game was because of how fluid it felt.  The graphics and some of the physics felt kinda dated, but everything was seemingly geared to performance.

If that is gone then I have no reason to be here.  Alas, I do not have this problem as I upgraded recently and usually keep a higher end system under the desk, (or two...sometimes three) but thats my biz so I'm expected to have the finer cuts of meat in my cooler right?

But I can tell you, that nothing is more frustrating to go from 100% playable perfect etc to unplayable without so much as an explanation as to why this is necessary.

IMO the graphics do NOT appear to be an upgrade.  I'm hoping they are prepping for somethign bigger in the future and something in the background is what is causing the big drop for many folks.  But honestly, can you say the graphics look that much better?  I can't.  If anything I see a downgrade.

I looks like a picture of terrain plastered over a wireframe, with some very sparse trees that look like they were sprayed with shellac for effect.  Doing it wrong comes to mind.  Yes I am very critical of this patch even though I'm not being adversely affected by it.  If HTC is offended then they need to get into another biz but somehow I believe they are listening and trying to figure out what to do about it.  I expect an answer from them eventually, and hopefully a resolution.

I'm actually surprised how many people patted them on the back in the beta forums while in game I heard nothing but complaints.

People need to speak their minds about the dissatisfaction with products/services being rendered.  If they don't the people providing these services will never know how to make you happy and draw in your $$.

For me, it's a no brainer.  I keep playing.  But if I start stuttering just as I'm about to jump someone, I'll be more than a bit po'd.

So lets keep it light for those folks having issues with the game.  Too many people are quick to judge when it doesn't affect them.  Imagine you just had your favorite pastime (for many) ripped out of your hands in one day!?

"I'm actually surprised how many people patted them on the back in the beta forums while in game I heard nothing but complaints."

Many people did not download and test the beta on their systems, their first time was seeing it today. Soon as the beta went open I tested it on my system, I found a bug for my system and reported it. Shorty there after it was fixed. The best thing for people to do is go to tech support forum and give what problem they are having with their dxdiag report. A screenshot helps as well if possible.

This reminds me of the last graphic update many years ago with all the complaints about new graphics. The game is still fluid with no stutters in a few large furballs tonight near a field on my system.

Your 1 gig video card makes all the difference in the world when it comes to this update. So while you might have a low spec machine you have a very high spec video card..

Actually 1Gb video cards perform WORSE in general than thier 512 mb counteparts.  I have rarely if ever seen a 1Gb card with equal or faster memory bandwidth (the amount of data which can be transferred into and out of video card memory over a specific length of time... typically expressed in Gb/sec.) than the same card with 512 mb of memory.  In addition to this the 512 cards typically also have faster GPU clock speeds.

Furthermore, a 32 bit operating system will only recognize between 3.25 and 3.75 Gb of system RAM in total which includes the video card memory.  Unless you only have 2 Gb of RAM installed a 1 Gb video card is simply stealing 512 mb of allocable RAM from the rest of the system.  Finally, even if you were running a 64 bit operating system no 32 bit application is allowed by Windows to utilize more than 2 Gb of RAM.  Therefore running a 1Gb video card leaves you wilth 1Gb of system RAM available to the game.  In a game such as AH which is more CPU/system dependent than GPU dependent this can cause a serious degredation in performance.

1 Gb video cards are a marketing ploy for the uninformed.

Just thought I'd set the record striaght.

I am not surprised, myself.......

only about 1/5th of the registered players ingame, also are a registered member of the Aces high Messageboards/Forum...
anyways, thats what has been posted in the past...and if that is the case then 80% of the players online was not even aware there was an Open Beta to check out since June 25th of 2009.......

If people would look at the aces high HomePage every once and a while and read up on the News updates, then they might of known it was coming........

Is why I always thought that when new players sign up and create a gameid, they also should have to register their username on the BBS.......at least then they know of it, that it exist and then it would be noones fault but their own for not keeping up with News about the game we all love to play........

YMMV

hope everyone figures out a way to keep enjoying the game.......good luck.....

HTC never worried about going backward after a new version was released trying to keep the people they lost before but this time they might have a chance if they wanted to use H2H for it. I know they were talking about bringing it back and it could be a new source of revenue if priced right.

Cant read the instruments anymore, terrain looks like fondu, and I dont have intel written anywhere on this pc.
{AMD}, and its not even friggin paid off until next week.

I have to carry this thing to some over priced pc upgrade place, to find out that im going to have to spend MORE money, and the pay off might be flying around with low ress terrain that looks like a green/brown fog.

What they hell where they thinking?
Do you expect me to pay for this?, you've taken my favorite pastime and priced it right outta my reach, and these lower res settings are almost useless... my buddy walked in and asked me what the hell I was playing, and I had to say aces hi.... bastard laughed at me.

I cant even read the frigin instruments anymore.
Everyone says "wait and see" well it took them 6 months to screw the game up this bad, how long is it gonna take em to FIX IT!!!?

Terrain looks great though, especialy from the tower, and thats where ill be hanging out if I want to see it.

Short changed, ripped off, rubbish graphics, FR shot to pieces. Shadows! who gives a rats bellybutton about shadows, I know I bloody dont and many agree with me. All I want is a game that I can play and not a game Im struggleing to play. Has HTC geared towards the rich? Its ok for you ignorant rich guys who can afford top end machienes, but before you go slagging off us poor guys who cant afford these top end machiens, many of us have families to provide for. I dont want some jumped up mummys boy telling me Im a loser because I dont have this card or that prosessor! IMO HTC have messes up big time. Next they`ll be upping the subs and if they do, will all you rich guys pay it? I proberbly think you would. But I can tell you, you will moan like hell about it, just like us poor guys who cant afford top end systems to run this poxy up-date. I only hope that HTC get it sorted out soon because I can see many guys going eleswhere and leaving all you rich guys to foot the bill.

Why do you feel compelled to take your PC to an "expensive upgrade place" rather than just search newegg for a cheap but decent vid card.  All you have to do is open the case, take out your old one, and plug in the new one.  Workload there is seriously like unscrewing a couple things to get the case open.

If a larger upgrade is required, then wait :).  Would you mind posting your PC's specs?  Couldn't hurt to see if anything could be done meanwhile to get your FR up.

Also I think it can be assumed HiTech doesn't like to or plan to lose customers.  If he sees (with their magic power data) that the update had a negative effect, other than the initial "omg"... I think they will do something.  No one just lets their company fail :lol.

Fifteen dollars could feed rice to a family of four, for a month.

If that's a problem, he could use the fifteen dollars on a taxi to the employment office (where he'd find nothing); too bad he didn't graduate high school, go to college, get a master's degree, and be retired, here laughing at the poor, poor, imbeciles.

It's always so nice when people without a single fact make rash opinions and generalizations.  I don't like to air my personal laundry in public to derive sympathy from people I don't even know but this totally offends me.  I graduated High School, but no, I didn't go to college.  It wasn't as important back in 1974 as it is now.  I went to work and have held a job ever since.  I currently work for the state of North Dakota at our Penitentiary where the criminals have cable tv, cd players and Nintendo game cubes in their cells.  They have a track to run on, horseshoe pits, a softball diamond, handball courts, football, soccer, indoor basketball courts, volleyball, weight rooms, crafts, free clothes, food and medical, dental, and eye care.  Probably forgot a couple of things, but all paid for by my taxes.  My wife has Rheumatiod Arthritis and Lupus and is currently being treated for kidney failure.  Obviously, she can't work.  The government says she is not disabled, so I support our family of three in our crackerbox house with one car on my salary alone.  I'm good with all of that as I love my family, sorry if I sound a little grumpy that I can't partake of my favorite past time.  Next time, walk a mile in someone elses shoes before you shoot your mouth off.

I wish I only had a to replace a vid card.  I have a 2.6Ghz processor, 2GB of RAM but only a 175 watt power supply.  Can't upgrade the power supply because the power supply connects to the mobo with a proprietary connector and Compaq doesn't make a 400w power supply for my machine.  My vid card only has 128mb of ram and the 512 cards require 400w power supplies.  I may be wrong but I don't think there is much hope of getting much more out of my card.  That being said, I'll try anything because I really love this game.  I think about playing all day at work for God's sakes, good thing I'm not addicted.  Thanks so much for your suggestions and support, it definitely is appreciated.

So, well here you are. :cry Yeah my system rocks and the game looks great.  :rock But I am not running a quad core. there is plenty of info here in the forums on what works.  Instead of complaining and threatening to quit (which won't allow you play) you should be focusing on how to fix the problem. The whining here will not improve your frame rates. Look into your systems and figure out what is the bottleneck. Get a paper route, save your change, be creative. All this I can't stuff and I quit garbage is pretty defeatist. Maybe its as simple as downloading the new textures. Maybe its checking the video settings in the first menu? Could it be a graphics setting in the game? FFS some of you guys are in need of some serious motivational improvement.  :rofl

It's impossible to make out how close you are to the ground or water.  I just don't think this is worth the $15.00.  Got some serious decision making to do.  :cry

I am running an ATI x300 or 600 on a middle aged machine.  I had to turn the graphics down, but I got 50-75 fps.  Initially, I had a problem picking out planes against the ground while looking down.  I had to increase my Gamma (whatever the heck that is) to 1.5 from 1.  It brightened the screen in general.

Tweak your settings a little.  Hang in there.

I'm sympathetic to everyone who can no longer play, and understand dropping a thousand bucks on a new system just isn't an option for many right now.

That said, try to be optimistic, and work out a plan...

1. Try posting your dxdiag, etc., in a tech support forum and giving HTC a few weeks to try to resolve your problem;
2. See what suggestions other members have for possible upgrades;
3. Figure out how much those upgrades would cost, and cancel your account until you can afford them.

You never know.  Your problem could be something that $60-90 might help.  That's 4-6 months out of the game.  It may seem horrible, but a 4-6 month break might actually be an interesting experiment for some of you.  I take long breaks all the time, and it makes the game seem a bit more fresh for awhile when I come back.  4-6 months of an extra few hours spare time might also help you earn a bit more money, either with overtime, or even just turning some hobbies/odd skills into petty cash.  Or, it could help you reconnect with the loved one who resents your playing this game :)

Look on the bright side as best you can, and good luck.

You are correct but if he is running a low end machine and has crap for a video card and alow amount of ram and he adds in the 1 gig card it is essentually upgrding a couple of different aspects of his machine, so in his machine it is the one thing that he did that is allowing him to play the game.

You don't need a top end computer to run it at max detail, not even close.  Stop with the lies.

Yes, you do need a semi-decent video card, that is all.  Maybe $75-150 and you are all set unless your computer is seriously ancient.

My computer is almost four years old now and runs the game at 1920x1280 and max detail without any problems.

I agree with you Karnak. Only problem is I'm guessing many of the people suffering problems have older AGP motherboards rather than PCI-X boards. Finding any kind of card for them is getting increasingly difficult.

I can't agree more.  The new aircraft are easily the best thing about the update.

The new terrain is too pastel and is too busy; sometimes less is more.  When you get up to altitude it still looks like a bunch of repeating tiles.  The water looks great when you get very low, but it also has a tiled look at low/medium-low altitude.  If anything, a makeover of clouds and lighting might have added a lot more.  The way the sun blocks your vision in an on/off fashion is very poor.

I'm not a huge fan of the new ground textures either. Would someone like to tell me why HTC have incorporated trees into the ground textures, then placed 3D trees randomly on top?

If done right, new textures are always a fantastic upgrade. Take the new water texture for example, it looks great.

My PC is a Dell Dimension 3000 purchased in 2004.  The build dates back to 2000.  I upgraded to 1 Gig of ram, runs at about 3 GHz, Pentium 4 with 2 processors.  My video card dates back to the Stone Age---a PCI slot (not PCI-e) a Radeon X1300, but better than the integrated video crap that came with it.  I am very limited to what is available to using a PCI slot, not much out there.

I had to uncheck a lot of settings within Aces High to get it to run.  It runs good enough, means WORKAROUND!

Once Windows 7 comes out, I'll get a better PC.  My PC still works good enough for most things except gaming.  I will keep it forever as long as I can still get parts for it.  I have never had it to a shop for any kind of repair, I always figure it out, eventually.  And Dell is not as propriety as people have told me.  I get parts to Best Buy and NewEgg to fix it.

I am not impressed with new update, either.  Maybe better days are ahead.

I know money is tight right now, but is ~$120 all that hard to come up with?  I admit we aren't doing great with money, but we can scrounge up some money on occasion for something "fun".  $120 can get someone: A motherboard, CPU and RAM that will help vastly with the game, and when you get a little more you can spend another 120-200$ for a Power Supply and Video Card to complete the upgrade.

Will the upgrade be this Uber-elitest Killer Gamer?  No, but it will do dang well for most everything.
Currently I can find (Using some parts I have/will use):

Motherboard:   55-60$
  Type: AMD
  Socket: AM2/AM2+/AM3
  Brand: Biostar

CPU:  55-65$
  Type: AMD (64) X2
  Socket: AM2/AM2+
  Speed: 2.5GHz+

RAM: 25-30$
  Type: DDR2
  Speed: 800MHz

I am using almost those exact parts, and had (upgraded since it died) a 60$ Video card running Beta at 3/4 Settings at 45FR.
With some extra money a Good PSU and Video card:

PSU: 85$  (Can find good ones for less too)
  Type: OCZ
  Power: 700Watt  /  72A on 4x 12v rails

Video Card: 75-150$
  Type: NVidia
  Card: GeForce 9600-9800
  Socket: PCI-E x16

It doesn't take a TilDeath PC to run this game, although I admit he does great work, it just takes some small investments.  Just hope people realize not all PC parts are for just rich people. :salute
