this game needs submarines! they won't have control mode 2 or 3, they'll have control mode 1 like :airplane:)thre should be different types so people tell us what you guys would like

Sigh...

what?

Ok, obviously you're very young, so I'm going to try and help you out with post like this.
1) This should have been posted under wishlist because this is something you wish to be in the game, I'm sure Skuzzy will move it there in the morning.
2) No one is going to listen to you with that kind of sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. No, everything doesn't have to be perfect, this is just a forum, but being able to read it without getting a headache is important.
3) Submarines have been on the wishlist for a long time, I think there are even some relatively current threads of it. You should have searched the forums using the search box in the upper right side of these pages. Then you could read up on some other people's comments for and against this idea.
4) Saying "this game needs submarines!" is not an argument. You need to explain why you feel this "needs" submarines, in what way would they be beneficial, maybe address some of the concerns of others. I don't really know what you are talking about control modes.
So just slow down, read some other posts, and make a clear, understandable, well thought out wish.

If I recall right HT said he'd have a Submarine in AH one day.
Wasn't his dad a submariner?
Or am I getting old....

Honestly! I am pretty sure, There was a big submarine thread some long time ago. But searching the forum can be quite a pain...

I'm sure I read that HTC did intend to put subs into the game. There must have been technical or game play problems though because they were dropped.
I think the intention was to have wolf-packs which were managed like fleets are now. However they are REAL slow (game-wise).

Sub spawn points could be an idea?? Say...elsewhere than PT spawn.

Umm...that was sarcasm (go ahead and get a dictionary for the big word, I'll wait......). I'm actually a supporter of the request for submarines. :salute

If that was sarcasm then you should have put on one of these: :lol :P

If I recall, I believe it has something to do with how water is modeled in AH.
-
Understood, not too sure how big of a headache that issue would be.... I think someone posted that it could be a matter of assigning a negative value to the water similar to the positive values of air altitude (relative to the value of land or water surface)...... I'm not an expert but that basic theory sounds reasonable to me. And btw 5pointOh, I sincerely appreciate you for bringing up a relevant "technical" issue for discussion. :salute
-
that is concerning issue to after all the water in ah is 2d not 3d
-
Not really sure what the first part of your post is saying...... not gonna pick on you about it though. But the important part is 2D versus 3D. Anyone care to jump in with relevant thoughts on this?
-
my friend has an idea but he's too chicken to type it in so here goes: have subs stay with other naval forces like pt boats. ex: your driving your pt boat then whack your hit by a torp taking out most of your gunner stands so you use the subs lone mg to blast the tbm thhat attacked you out of the sky or position the sub to take a torp shot
-

I'm not sure what your idea is. BTW, .50cal can tear apart a PT boat. Do torps even ride at the right level to damage a PT in game?
Yeah, but anyway I have clue what you are saying. I believe we'll see subs in the game some day, whenever HTC gets some spare time :rofl and figures out how to best implement it.
-
If a torp could get shallow enough to hit a PT boat (torpedo run depth having a normal value of X and PT boat having a draft value of Z), and if its warhead had a contact detonator versus a magnetic detonator (PT boats being made of with a wooden hull) then I'm pretty sure the warhead would destroy the boat......

Yeah, that was my point, it would destroy the boat, and then some.
and then some more.

Glad to be of assistance sir. :salute

ok this is geting a little of track but good point about the torp hiting the pt and most pt boats were made out of rubber

Most PT boats were made out of rubber? Seriously, where do you get these nuggets of knowledge? All three PT boat manufacturers that build PT boats for the USN used mahogany in the construction of the boats.

There is an old game I used to play called Silent Service that is now abondonware, I'm sure alot you fellow sim-heads will probably remember it. I don't know squat about 'coading' but if HT was going to add subs to the game, that one would be a great program to start from. I think it was one of Sid Meier's early sims with microprose, so the rights to that one would be like pulling teeth, but a similar concept adapted to AH would be a cool addition to the game IMO.

"Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries, now go away or I shall taunt you for a second time!!"
Now that that bit of Monty Python is out of the way, 2D water would be practically impossible to add subs in. I'm assuming that the way it's programmed now is that the water is an absolute point (hit it with x much force, plane is destroyed), which also throws in another monkey wrench as a negative value couldn't be assigned. The water would have to be completely reprogrammed/drawn for an above water view, and below, along with allowing pressure to grow on the outside of a sub, damage to the sub from pressure, etc... etc...
It could be done, but it would take ALOT of work and some serious time to do, as, if my assumptions are correct, 1) Collisions with water would have to be redone. 2) Water would have to be remade. 3) A new damage model would have to be put in place (not arguing! :D) and 4) A way of destroying subs would have to be made (ie depth charges w/ task groups).
I love the idea of subs, but it would take a bit of work...
-
"Its just a fleshwound" lol. I agree that its gonna take a lot of work and I don't claim to be an expert on the subject but I have to go back to the posting about Silent Service as being a good proof of concept and model. Its not going to have to necessarily be a "from scratch" project. :salute

Anyone else find it ironic that shiv is in a thread with subs?
shiv=Silent Hunter IV?

Silent Hunter, I like that. I'll need an F4U with a caterpillar drive.

Now let's enter Fantasy Land and assume that the first AH submarine won't be an American Gato-class, a U-boat or an I-class aircraft carrier, but instead a splendid Royal Navy T-class . . .

Subs would be cool. And yes, I remember Silent Service. One problem tho, there's a whole lot of problems. Which submarines would you add? Which type torpedo and guidance mechanism? Would they allow for rogue torps? (When the guidance failed and the torp did a circle back to where it came from) What about the dangers to a sub? Crush depths, sonar, audiophones on the sub-hunters, AIR SUPPLY (no reference to the band), fuel and battery. You would have to completely remodel the water so it isn't a blue parking lot. Now you have sea affects to worry about. High seas would obstruct views thru the periscope, which it should, but from the computers end, how much more proccessing power would it take when you're flying and the computer's busy trying to figure out where each wave went? You would have to build a whole new game essentially, (Aces Deep) Then figure out how to combine the 2 without sapping all the power from the computer.

that ws one of the main reasons of the post..........if there subs are going to be introduced then which subs

That's just it though, (don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled about the idea of subs, if anything just so I can hunt them) it's not just what subs. Subs were like planes in WWII. Major innovations were made from beginning of the war to the end. But there were alot of other issues that subs had to deal with that planes didn't. When you drop a bomb, you don't have to worry about the bomb turning round and coming back at you. You did with subs. I don't think anyone is arguing that they don't want subs, more like how would you implement them.

Just model the torpedos after the in game 50 cal.
They always seem to home in on me .
-
1. Torps would operate just as they do now for PT boats and air delivery.
2. When discussed previously on other threads, it was widely believed that a water remodel is a high priority need anyway.
3. As was stated earlier, submarine warfare was in a high-curve evolutionary state during the war. The same could be said for the level of detail for this concept. (Air supply, water pressure, counter-measures etc.)
4. Licensing agreement or consultation with the designers of one of the other, older submarine games is a shortcut I have already touched upon in an earlier post. Coding might not be easily compatible or convertable but the design notes and various details and ideas would be helpful.
