So I don't fly as much now as I used to. Part of it is because recent updates cause weird performance issues: My FR is fine, rarely dipping out of the 50s, but there's situations where things get....jerky. What I mean is, everything is smooth, then it jumps, then it's smooth, then it jumps, in a very regular pattern. Unfortunately it also makes things very difficult in a fight. It started doing this around the 2.18 or 2.19 update. I've tried tweaking graphics settings, and it doesn't make a difference. It has SOMETHING to do with flying online, because everything is fine playing with the offline drones.
ANYWAY, so I decide to jump into the EW arena where there's a couple people on for a couple light fights. I check the roster, and there's two Bish and one Nit. The Nit is attacking Rook Land, so I go Rook to up and find some action. I have the bandit on Dot Dar IB to a V-base, and I am climbing out to an intercept position. He turns around and runs home. I'm not even CLOSE to being in dot range--hell, I'm still almost a sector out--and he turns around and runs home.
Keep in mind, there's only ONE person online as a Nit. I know who you are.
I get to his base and circle a bit, then shed some altitude and head back south. There's only one Nit online, so I know EXACTLY who it was.
I send him a message: "I'm cruising S of field at Angels 5. Come and get me."
I run a holding pattern about halfway between our two bases with my power on max loiter at 5000ft and wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. He's still online, and sitting in the tower. He knows where I am (I'm sitting in his dar circle) and what my altitude is. He could even grab himself a massive altitude advantage because he knows EXACTLY where I am, and he just sits in the tower.
Finally after a good 30mins or so of flying around I get fed up and RTB.
I mean, seriously. Yeah, it's his 15 bucks, but what the hell is the point of spending 15 bucks a month on a MMO game subscription when you won't take off while another player is in the area? If you want to play with the AI, you can fly offline for free as much as you want. You don't even have to pay for the game ITSELF.
Maybe the EWA and MWA should become a fighters-only game like the WWI arenas with all ordinance disabled. If you can't bomb and milkrun bases in GVs, maybe people will actually fight.
-
I think that anytime an LW pilot comes over to early war, they all whisper to one another and collaborate to avoid all fights so that the LW guy will go away. Once he leaves, the EW party starts back up again. That is the most likely explanation obviously.
-
I thought the EW had bomb**** rejects from the DA in it. Surprised the guy didn't just ditch whatever he was flying and move to a different area like they normally do in there.
-
Maybe you should go to the DA next time? Looks like the guy wasn´t interested in playing the game the way you want it to be played. :noid
-
If it was me I wouldn't do it either I'd rather sneak a base, maybe he's like me he dosen't care for 1v1s.
-

It was you wasn't it?
-
there is definately a band of fellows in EW and MW who prefer to play the game against AI. They are interested in operating as a team (squad) taking undefended bases mostly, and DO NOT LIKE human opposition.
And yes, It is there money and they are entitled to play the game however they want. Not much fun for the rest of us but thats the way this cookie crumbles.
-
Yeah, it's his 15 bucks,

ya shoulda bailed, and waited in the field gun of the base he was headed to.

Or we could give him the benefit of the doubt that something came up so he landed and went afk.

you mean like the phone, or like a funny noise outside? or one of the kids suddenly needs ya?
-
Flying around looking for a fight in EW: 30 minutes
Coming to the bbs to share the experience: 30 minutes
Total time wasted: 1 hr
-

Nope. When I saw him turn tail for base I pursued. He had already landed by the time I arrived, so I circled around the edge of the area out of AAA range to see if he'd up for a fight or pop up somewhere else (I see this one a LOT in MWA. Guys up, see enemies up to counter, run home and reup on the other side of the map). Instead he took a couple pot shots at me from one of the field guns before I retired to my holding position and "invited" him out to play.
Maybe you should go to the DA next time?
If you've ever spent any appreciable time in the DA, you'd know EXACTLY why I preferred to look for a fight in one of the smaller arenas.
-
hmmmmm... good thing he's not in Texas or he'd have to pay tax on that.
I heard about this arena where, no matter what, if there's one regular in there they'll duke it out every time... *thinks*... ummm where's Jaeger? He know the directions and stuff I just go by the landmarks :t
-
the true shame of this is that the ew arena used to be a fun place to play. when i was with the hired guns, we were in there on a regular basis, and there were fights pretty much every night.
-
Is it possible that he went afk? I myself forget to shut down my comp before going to sleep last night, and was afk in-game for a good 12 hours before I returned to my computer this morning.

I would argue that its our money. A large portion of our $15 per month is going towards keeping two arenas online that are filled with nothing but < 10 people flying against the AI, when the LW arenas have over 100, probably over 200, each. They could shut down the early war arenas and start charging everyone some amount less per month than they do now.
The fact that they haven't done that either means server time is essentially free or we are subsidizing, in a matter of speaking, the other arenas. In the latter case, it is our $15 per month that is being "wasted".

when i fly midwar, i almost always see more than 10 people in there. i spend most of my online time in the ava these days though, as there's actually fun fights in there, as opposed to the mud movers in the other arenas.

How are you paying to keep 2 essentially empty arenas up? The Servers are split so that 1 LW and EW/MW are on 1 and the other LW and some other arenas are on another server. Assuming HTC has the LW arenas on different servers to avoid any problems you're going to pay for 2+ servers no matter what, so why get rid of 2 arenas that barely make a blip on the server load if it makes people happy to have? Having a micro-fraction less of server use isn't going to affect how much we pay, I would assume. Also, it they get rid of the arenas and charged less how many people would leave due to the lack of arenas? How much less could they afford to decrease the price if the extra 15$ incomes left? If 10 people left that's 150$ less a month they make just to make a few people "happy" that we now have 2 less arenas that never "hurt" anyone or anything (server space).
Only a HTC tech-knowledgeable person could really answer why it is how it is, but that's my small unedumacated guess about it. :)

huh? even my warped mind couldn't wrap itself around that logic... could you rephrase please?

See Rule #14

Hey, at least we got rid of the "cesspool environment" with the arena split.

No we didn't, it just moved to the DA.

I logged on saw six in EW, so jumped in. Five were from the same squad, all were on the same side. I switched to the side being attacked and went to the airbase under attack. Saw a Ju88 inbound and upped to intercept. He bailed over the town before I got to icon range. Saw another con on dar, so turned toward him. It was a goon, and the town wasn't even close to down. He bailed before I got close. Then the whole squad left the arena.

that's because you're a meanie, a poopiehead, and on top of that, you pick your nose. :devil

Regardless of the "It's your $15 dollars" line, it's clear that hitech's purpose in the online arenas is for players to engage other players. Thus why dar circles were extended and the NOE ceiling was greatly lowered; to make it harder for players to avoid actually fighting for control of the base.
I was tooling around in MW today seeing if I could fix my performance problems (I think I finally got that fixed, seems the Self-Shadows are causing an issue. It didn't start when they were FIRST introduced, so there must have been a change in one of the later patches that did something) and a LOT of the smack talk on 200 was who has the highest score (as well as one player blasting another for having no chess piece loyalty, and someone who took exception to me demonstrating that the Corsair has more to offer than just flaps. I seriously ROFLed). Maybe if hitech turned off the scoreboard for the EW and MW arenas the milkrunners will no longer have a reason to avoid fights for padding their scores....

funny you say that last part.
i often find great fights in mw. i like it there. i can also tell when the lw guys are there to build up perks for their rides of choice. how? well...first off, most of em can kick my bellybutton pretty handily, regardless of who has what advantage in the start of the fight.
secondly, the fights go higher. it seems the lw guys like to stay high in there. of course there's some regulars in there that do this too.

saxman,I was in MW today and you talk about engaging other players and watching them run.
you yourself ran from me like a lil school girl when you realised your F4U was in serious doo doo.
-
RofL!
What's your in-game name, as we obviously didn't see the same fights. Sortie 1 in my F4U I had a PW so RTB'ed. Sortie 2 I took my second kill, then turned N to re-grab altitude. It was at some point after that I saw I had picked up two tails, both of whom had alt on me at the time so I continued outbound. Once that was neutralized with and I re-engaged I was never ONCE outside of about 1500yds of my target.

i never run from ya. you take my poor poor pee38 apart too quickly. :aok
honestly, i always love the fights with you.......

The closest I came to "running" was a hard diving spiral when I had an unusually well-flown A-20 and a Spitfire both dog-piling me and I was trying to drag at least one of them out solo.

the spit was engaged with a C 2, i was the A-20 so it was just you and me
-
No, it wasn't. The Spit was right there behind me about 600 off when I entered into my dive. The C2 in question was still climbing out from the base and below us when we engaged, so wasn't even ABLE to pick up the Spit until after I'd started my dive.

So what? You won't fight one on two? Even when one is an A-20? Just curious. You always came off as better than that.

although i'm confident i'll lose....i do....because someday, i'll learn how to handle that situation, and win.
in his defense though, cobia is downright scary in that a20. :aok

Cobia in the A20 is damned hard to beat. I usually run like a scared little girl when he is around :O unless I can get a pic or some other dweeby move :neener:

More or less covers it. Was planning on knocking the A-20 out quickly then turning on the Spit, but I have no problems admitting the A-20 was better handled than I expected (I've actually NEVER seen an A-20 turn like that) so kudos for spoiling the plan. But there's a BIG difference between dropping down to force a change of position and get a second con off my bellybutton than bailing or milk-running undefended bases to avoid a fight altogether.

i've never seen cobia milkrun. he just seems to look for the fights in there, and barrels in headfirst.
-
I didn't say anything about HIM milkrunning, but that's the preference I've seen of the majority of the players in those two arenas (case in point: Before all of these fights started, 90% of the Bish were grabbing a Rook base. Rooks had NO players on whatsoever at the time).
-
One thing I can say about HTC and the $14.95 a month is the price has stayed the same for the 4 or 5 years I been playing no matter how many improvements HTC has made to the game. What else can you say that about anymore. I am retired and partly disabled so I am home a lot. The $14.95 is money well spent for me. Where else you going to find hours of entertainment for less than fifty cents a day and not leave the house.

i normally see knights rolling bases in mw. i haven't stopped in ew in a year or so.

Was just in MW, thats what they were doing.....in an arena with 19 people, the first con I encountered was so high, was not even an icon. (later proved to be a PJ) He dove, we fought, kilt him on the deck after a long fight, then Cobia and a 109 came...plastered me.(PJ musta put out a signal flare) Next run, another group of nits orbiting way high over a v base (the only aerial cons to be found) cloud level Mossie, B&Z'ed, endless ho attempts with the hizookas. 3rd attempt, he pw'd me as Cobia showed up...yawn. Back to LW

does this :devil lead us to the base rollers for the night? it's ashame......there's some good pile-its. the same thing that happened to ew is happening here. lazydog can tell ya........we were squaddies when this happened in ew. it sucked then, and it sucks that it's happening here now.
cobia, is an awsome fight, win or lose. if you want a 1-1 with him, and you ask, he's obliged me in the past. he also is one that doesn't complain when he ends up in a multi-con fight with himself being alone. he is one of the true fun guys in the arena.....probably one of the last ones. :aok
-
MW has gone through some squad changes/upheavals as of late. The complete domination the knights held for several years has finally been addressed by the rooks. For a while it appeared as if the knights had been completely smashed, having retreated to the empty EW arena for some uncontested smash and grab, but alas the past several days have seen some pretty intense competition back in MW. Even the bish have gotten off their backsides and joined into the fight.
Has been pretty enjoyable actually.

Hmm, a lot of pathetic responses in this one.... sad.
